We're Having a Baby

Disclaimer is on the introduction page.

Scott and Betty just returned from Elkheart, Indiana. Betty is pregnant and they have to make a few adjustments, but things are going pretty well in that category. The problem is something else. Wait and you’ll find out.

=======================================================

"This apartment is too small for when the baby gets older," said Betty, talking to Scott in their apartment.

"We don’t have that kind of money to spend for a new place," said Scott.

"How about using Dad’s will money? We're suppposed to get an annual payment every year. Now that the baby’s coming we’ll need that money."

"I know we do, but I don’t like the idea of taking that money. Your mother needs it more."

"Dad didn't give us all of his money. He did save some for her. Anyway, Mom is moving to Pittsburgh to be near her family, and she’ll be a great babysitter. She'll also have the money from selling the house."

"Let's not worry about this until later. We have plenty of time before the baby comes. It’s getting late and we have a long day ahead of us," Scott told his wife.

=======================================================

The next morning, Betty was typing the next day’s "Valiant Journey". There was a knock at the door. "Come in."

"Hi, Betty!" It was Maple.

"Hey, do you need something?" asked Betty.

"Oh, no. I was just wondering how you were doing."

"Just on the crazy side trying to catch up on all the writing. We should have come back sooner, but I wanted to say hi to all my old friends."

"How’s it going with you and Scotty? Everything back to normal?"

Betty could tell she knew everything and was waiting for her to say that she was pregnant. She knew she was starting to show and was amazed no one had said anything about it. "A lot better, but he still has what happened with Dan in the back of his mind."

"And he has something else on his mind now, doesn’t he?"

"He told you, didn’t he?"

"Of course! So, when is it due?"

"Not for another 5 months."

"Aren’t you excited?" asked Maple, who was practically jumping up and down.

"Yes, but I’ve gotten used to the idea."

"When are you going to tell the others?"

"I'll tell them later. Don’t you have to get back on the air in about a minute?" asked Betty, looking at her watch.

"I do. See ya," said Maple, rushing out the door.

=======================================================

A couple of days went by and finally everyone knew, including their audience. Mackie couldn’t leave it off the air and Scott told all their sponsors.

=======================================================

Gertie was sitting at her desk when a strange-looking man walked in.

"Miss Roberts?"

"No, but I’ll get her for you. Just hold on a second," said Gertie, ringing the Writer’s Room.

A minute later, Betty walked down the hall to the reception desk. "Miss Roberts?"

"Yes, but my name is Mrs. Sherwood now."

"This note is very urgent. Please read it, destroy it, and wait for the second part."

"Why?"

"You’ll find out after reading the note. Thank you and good-bye," said the man.

"What is it, Betty?" asked Gertie as Betty opened the envelope.

"I’m not quite sure." answered Betty, confused.

=======================================================

The next day Betty arrived early, just like the note told her to do. Betty walked down the hall to the writer’s room and found it locked. She pulled out the key out of her purse and unlocked the door. She opened the door slowly, not knowing what to expect, and turned on the lights to find no one there. The writer heard noises and figured Scott left soon after she did. She headed to Scott’s office.

A feeling of deja vu hit her as she slowly opened the door. "Victor!" exclaimed Betty.

"You aren’t going to faint on me again?" asked Victor, slowly turning around to face her.

"No. Anyway, you might have trouble catching me this time. Victor, are you back to stay?"

"No. I wanted to come back here one more time and see you. I still love you."

"But Victor..."

"I know...you're married and it's all over between us."

"That’s not all. I’m going to have a baby."

"Congratulations to you both. I only have a minute left. I have a plane to catch. I’m off to Europe doing something I can't tell you about."

"Scott should be here soon. Victor, maybe if life had turned out differently things would be different between us."

"Actually, Scott is here. I had to knock him out. Don’t worry, I didn't hit him too hard." He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek.

"Good-bye and take care. It’s dangerous in Europe."

"I will."He walked out the door.

Betty got a strange feeling that this would be the last time she would see him alive. She went into the Green Room. Walking over to Scott, she sat down next to him, bent down, and gave him a kiss.

"Betty, what happened?" asked Scott groggily.

"You hit your head on the door. Now lay back down and relax."

"When was the last time I told you I love you?"

"This morning, you nut." She started to lean over to kiss him, but the baby chose an odd time to kick.

"Is that our kid being a rascal?"

"Yep." She tried it again with no kick. It worked this time. They could hear Gertie walking into the station. Betty immediatly straightened herself out. "So, how’s your head feeling?"

"Much better," said Scott, rubbing his head where it was injured.

"Well, I have some scripts to write." Betty reached up and kissed him on the cheek.

Scott watched her leave. He couldn't believe how happy he was at this moment. At one time he never thought he had a chance with Betty, and now they were married and having a baby. He still had trouble seeing himself as a father, but the idea appealed to him. A hand waved in front of his face and he came back to reality. “Hiya Mapes,” he said.

"Scotty, looking dreamy eyed. I never thought it would ever happen. You must be very happy."

"Actually, Mapes, every day of my life is wonderful now that I’m married."

"So becoming a father doesn’t bother you?" "Does Betty ever talk about what happened to Victor?”

"No, she doesn’t. But wherever he went, I'd like him to stay there."

"I wouldn't."

"You still like him, don’t you?"

"Oh, would you look at the time? I’ve got a show to do."

=======================================================

"Hey, Scott, do you have some time for lunch?" asked Betty, walking into his office.

"For you, I have all the time in the world. I’ve got to feed two of you now."

=======================================================

Sitting at the Buttery, Betty had two questions to ask Scott. "What would have you done if I would have chosen Victor over you?”

"I would've done nothing, because my life without you would have no purpose. I love you with all my heart, and I would never have stop fighting for you until you did choose. My heart would have broken in two again."

"Are you happy about becoming a father?"

"I’m very happy. Why do you ask?"

"Never mind. I just was wondering."

They were silent for a minute when there was a big explosion. "Betty, get under the table!" Scott exclaimed as broken glass flew over the table. They sat at a booth by a window and could hear screaming from outside. Then there was silence. "Betty, stay here. I’m going to find out what happened."

He headed outside to see a disaster zone. He yelled across the street to a man. "Hey, do you know what happened?"

“An airplane exploded," said the man.

Scott could hear the rescue team coming down the road. He went back inside to get Betty, but he wasn’t going back out that way.

"Scott, what happened?" asked Betty.

"An airplane blew up. Are you all right?" asked Scott looking at her. She was shaking and was pale white with fright.

"I’m fine, just a little shaken."

=======================================================

Betty walked into the studio just as they were making the latest bullition about the airplane disaster. She listened with tears in her eyes.

Mackie was reading it with the voice he used to announce that Victor was dead and Jeff coming home over a couple years ago. "Today at approximately 12:15 an airplane exploded in the sky over the Pittsburgh International Airport. There were minor injuries on the ground, but everyone on board was killed. This included WENN’s former station manager, Victor Comstock. He will be missed by everyone here."

The tears were flowing now. Betty felt it was her fault. Maybe if she had stopped from going, or if she had chosen him instead of Scott.... "Victor..." whispered Betty as she fainted. As she lay there unconscious her mind wondered off to that morning. She knew in her heart that Victor wasn’t dead.
