The next few months went by slowly for Betty. Victor’s funeral and a memorial were a week after the airplane disaster. She knew deep down he was alive, but her common sense told her that he was dead.

Betty wasn't the only one who was restless. Scott was hearing about all the men who went off to fight to die or come back injured. Was he doing the right thing?

"Betty, can I talk to you about something?" asked Scott, walking into the Writer’s Room.

"Of course, darling. What is it?"

"I can’t handle this any longer!" He went on to explain.

"But Scott..." said Betty, unable to finish the sentence.

"Betty, I have to do it for you and the baby. It’s going to be hard leaving, but I have to."

"Scott, I love you!"

"I love you, too!" said Scott, wiping away tears from her eyes as he leaned down to kiss her.

Later that day, Betty was sitting in the office with the door locked and the lights off. She wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come.

What if something happened to him, and he can’t get hold of me? "Stop it, Betty Sherwood!" she exclaimed out loud. That finally made the tears flow.

She heard someone call her name outside the door. "BettyBettyBetty," said Scott. He hadn't used that line since heaven knows when. She went and opened the door. "Good, good news, Betty!" said Scott, then looked at her wet eyes. "Betty, are you o.k.?"

"So what’s the big news?"

The weeks went by and the baby was about due. Scott could only come to WENN in the mornings and Betty was doing a lot of extra work. She wouldn’t sit back and relax. Everyone was worried about her. She was working from early morning until late at night.

Scott would work there in the mornings and that was the only time she could see him. Everyone eventually found out where he was and tried their best to comfort Betty.

Late one night, Betty was typing the next morning's "Bedside Manor". She knew that she should go home. Her eyes were drooping and she couldn’t concentrate, but the script needed to be completed. Then she felt a huge pain in her stomach.

Scott walked through the doors to find all the lights still on. He had gone home expecting Betty to be there, but she wasn’t. He headed to the Writer’s Room and opened the door to find Betty laying there asleep. He gently woke her up.

"Scott, what are you doing here? It’s not morning yet," asked Betty, feeling another pain in her stomach.

"I came to spend some time with my wife. Why are you here so late?"

"There's some typing that I needed to do for tomorrow. Ah, Scott I think I’m ready to go to the hospital now!!"

"You mean..." Betty just nodded her head. "I’ll go call a cab. You sit back and relax."

"Calm down! We have plenty of time."

Scott was pacing up and down the Waiting Room. He called everyone. They were all on their way.

He finally sat down. His mind wondered off. It only seemed a little while ago that Betty had told him she was going to have a baby. So many things happened to them since that first day he walked into the WENN doors. He remembered following her home every night after Victor died the first time and buying her ticket home for Christmas and the night she kissed him on the cheek. Then there was that first date, and the first kiss, WOW!!! Of course, he couldn't forget that the night he proposed, and the time he told her "I love you,".

"Are you alright, Scotty?" asked Maple as she walked into the the Waiting Room.

"I’m fine. I was just thinking." Everyone started piling in after that. No one knew quite what to say, so they sat in silence.

Finally the nurse came in. "Mr. Sherwood, congratulations, you have twins, a boy and a girl."

"Are they o.k.? How’s Betty? May I see them now?" Scott babbled.

"Yes, they're doing just fine, and you may see them," smiled the nurse. Scott was led to Betty’s room. "I’ll go get the little ones. You can talk to your wife."

Scott walked into Betty’s room. She was just awakening.

"Darling...," whispered Scott.

"Scott, is that you?"

"Yes. How are you feeling?"

"Tired, but a lot thinner." There was a knock at the door and the nurse came in with the babies.

"Here we go, Mom and Dad," said the nurse. She handed each one a baby.

Betty looked down at the baby and then up at her husband >with adoring eyes. There were hints of tears of happiness in Scott's eyes. "Scott, I love you!"

"I love you, too!"

"They are beautiful, aren’t they?"

"The most beautiful babies I’ve ever seen."

"May we come in?" asked Maple, peeking through the door, with the rest of the gang right behind her.

"Come on in," said Betty. They conversed for a little while, then one by one they left. Betty and Scott were finally alone after the babies were taken away.

"Betty, I need to talk to you about something important," said Scott quietly.

"What is it, Scott?" asked Betty.

"I’m leaving in a couple of days. My..." started Scott, but the nurse came in.

"Sorry Mr. Sherwood, but it’s time for her to get some rest. I’ll leave you two alone for a moment."

Scott sighed. "I’ll come back tomorrow and explain what'ss going on. For now, I'll just let you get some sleep. I love you Mommy!"

"I love you too, Papa!" Scott gave Betty a kiss and left.

Scott sat in his office at the station. It was going to be a long time before he would see this place again. Maybe he would never come back. He recieved a 48 hour pass to say good-bye to his friends, and more importantly, his wife and their children. He remembered the first time he left the station. Everybody tried to save his job, except for Betty, but it was of no use. Rollie Pruit wanted him out of there. That was also the first time he realized how much he loved Betty, as well as the time he thought that he had no chance of winning her heart. Was he wrong!!

#####################################################################################

The next day, Scott gathered everyone in the Green Room. "I’ve gathered you all here to say good-bye and ask you a favor," said Scott.

"What is it, Scotty?" asked Maple.

"I’m being shipped overseas," answered Scott as he heard a couple of gasps from the audience. Then he continued. "Shh! I need to ask you a favor. I won’t be here when Betty gets out of the hospital. I need you guys to be there for her, especially if something happens to me."

"Don’t worry, Scott. We’ll all watch over her and the babies for you. Just take care of yourself. We’ll miss you," said Eugenia with tears in her eyes.

"Thanks, everyone. I'll miss you, but now I have to say good-bye to Betty, said Scott. As everyone was leaving, he stopped Maple. "Maple, when I said that, I was really meant you. She’ll need a close friend."

"I'll be there for her. Now go visit Betty, but first give me a hug," said Maple, with a tear rolling down her face for her best friend in the whole wide world. Scott gave her a big hug and then left.

#####################################################################################

Scott walked into Betty’s room. "Scott!" exclaimed Betty.

"Betty, how are you?" asked Scott, going over to her and kissing her.

"A lot better, now that you're here. Now, tell me what you were going to say last night."

"I’m going overseas. Tonight is the last night I can spend with you."

"Scott, no! Not now! What about our children, Anne and Andy? They need a father and I need you!"

"I have to do this. I love you and I know I am going to miss so much, but I have to do my part in this war."

"I know, I know. It’s just so hard to say good-bye," said Betty, crying.

"Please don’t cry!" exclaimed Scott, hugging her. "Everything will be all right. If you need someone to talk to Maple will always be there, and everyone else at the station. I love you with all my heart."

The nurse walked in with the babies. "I’m sorry to break this up, but I thought you would like to see your children one more time."

"Thank you, I would," said Scott. He held Anne close to his body and lightly kissed her head. "I love you, Anne! Don’t forget me." Scott did the same with Andy.

"I won’t let them, Scott," said Betty, looking up at her husband who she loved so much. The nurse came in took the babies.

Then Scott turned to Betty with tears in his eyes. "If something happens to me..."

Betty cut him off. "Don’t talk that way! This war is going to be over soon, and you’ll be coming home."

"I need to finish. I’ve been thinking this over for a long time, and I knew I needed to save up some money to take care of you if something happens. I bought some war bonds and some sturdy stocks, which a friend of mine is taking care of. Betty," said Scott, pulling out a key, "this key is to unlock the strongbox in my office. If I die take it out, but only if I die.”

Betty took it. "What’s in it?"

"It’s a secret."

"How much time do you have left?"

"Eight minutes."

"Only eight more minutes. Scott, just hold me for a while." Scott just held her. When his time there was almost up, he murmured "BettyBettyBetty," for the last time, kissed her passionately, and left the hospital.
