A Good Night's Sleep

By Rachel Moninger

This takes place sometime after "Mr. and Mrs. Singer" and before "Happy Homecomings."

DISCLAIMER: No, I do not own the characters, they belong to Rupert Holmes and AMC, but I wrote the story...you get the idea. Copyright 1999 by Rachel Moninger.

Jeff Singer held in his hand the most recent of the letters that he had sent Hilary, and which she had sent back to him. He downed the last shot of whiskey and said goodbye to the bartender.

Hilary Booth ran her hand over the spines of the books on her vast bookshelf. She selected Shakespeare's HAMLET and curled up on her soft velvet armchair.

Jeff walked shakily down the streets of London until he arrived at his hotel. He wearily climbed the stairs until he reached is room.

Hilary tried her best to read the play, but it was no use. She was too distracted to do....anything. She felt a tear roll down her cheek. She bolted from the armchair and hastily wiped the tear from her face.

With some difficulty, the hotel room door opened and Jeff entered. He slammed the door and flung himself down on the bed. He decided to try and sleep through any hangover he might have in the morning.

Hilary took off her robe and laid down on the couch in her living room. She hadn't been able to sleep on her bed since Pavla visited WENN.

Jeff was startled to hear explosions and whistling noises. He looked to his right. He couldn't see Victor. He couldn't see anything. The smoke was beginning to choke him. He called desprately for Victor. Where was he? Jeff's eyes snapped open as he yelled one last time, "VICTOR!!"

Hilary awoke with a start. What was that? She thought she heard someone yelling.

Jeff sat up in his bed. He was in the hotel room. It must have been a dream. He gasped for breath, feeling the sweat trickling from his forehead.

Hilary repositioned herself on the couch and, without realizing it, began to stroke her pillow with the back of her hand.

Jeff's heartbeat began to slow as his adrenalin stopped coarsing through him. He felt better, calmer. He lowered himsef back on the bed. Slowly, he drifted off to sleep.

"Good night, Pumpkin," murmed Hilary as she fell into a deep sleep.
