God’s music provides no respite to the inspiration it provides to me. Sometimes the lyrical wizardry says so much in so few words it leaves no suspicion that the words are straight from God. So, when the word in its musical form inspires me, it fulfills the Isaiah 55 promise. Today, these words were magnified and highlighted as if destined for the purpose of grabbing my attention, and so they did.

When Casting Crowns sings, “And while you're lying in the dark, There shines an everlasting light”, in their song, While You Were Sleeping, my mind goes into overdrive. What a profound lesson to hear, while we are entrapped in the darkness of our life, and some times even without our knowledge, the everlasting light beacons for us.

In the paralyzing desperation that is our lives we lie in the darkness of our unfaithfulness, lust, greed, addictions, indulgences and sickness. We are over extended in debt and suffering under the weight of parenting paradigms. Confusion and uncertainty reigns in every decision and choice we make. We remain solidly in situations that we cannot control,

The great thing about a life of faithfulness is that your sin, each and every one of them has an antidote of saving grace. This is a well known but rarely remembered benefit of being disciples of faith. We prefer instead to work out and wrangle situations, manipulating details to try and right life’s wrongs. More often then not we confound the truths and further the original complications. Our very best efforts very often drive us deeper into problems.

What we lose track of, lying in that darkness, is the everlasting light that shines nonetheless. The everlasting light shines for us in peace, forgiveness, redemption, comfort, salvation and grace. It beacons in all storms for our healing, mercy and love. When our life appears to be in its darkest lie, it is the light of truth. When we are besieged with slanderous words, it is the light of encouragement and support and when we are hopeless in life, it is the light of everlasting hope.

So please, if you are lying in darkness and trying to figure out how you got there and what you need to do to get out, remember this; the everlasting light does not only shine when you come and look for it. It does not exclusively shine once you have realized your efforts fall short or you get tired of pursuing dead ends. The light shines constantly and without fail. It shines faithfully ready to light the way whenever we seek it.
