New Bereavement Group Uses Drama Arts To Heal

FREEHOLD, NJ When someone we love dies, it can feel as though an important part of ourselves has suddenly vanished. It is often hard to imagine continuing to live through the pain and turmoil of grief.

Finding a warm and caring group to work out the powerful emotions triggered by the loss of a loved one is often quite challenging. A new weekly group is forming to address this need. It is a joint project of Freehold Community Counseling Service and Contemporary Counseling Center of Marlboro. The program, which will utilize interactive group activities and drama arts, will be led by Bernice Garfield-Szita, MS, LPC and Bob Szita MS, LPC. They are known as compassionate hospice and oncology group leaders. They are fellows of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama and national trainers in group work.

"People often ask us if it is depressing to work so closely with the sadness of bereavement and we tell them it is very fulfilling work that helps us learn the true value of life", says Ms Garfield-Szita. "It is such a satisfying experience to feel we are helping people in what might be their darkest hour", adds Mr. Szita. "We are grateful to the American Hotel for their generosity in providing a cheerful meeting room", reflects Ms. Garfield-Szita.
