New Jersey Association for Spiritual, Ethical & Religious Values in Counseling
January 2000 **********a Sanctuary Publication ********** Newsletter
THANK YOU FOR JOINING NJASERVIC

Chartered during 1989, NJASERVIC emphasizes the spiritual, ethical and values dimensions of counseling issues, such as human rights, spiritual growth, world peace and religious freedom. When we formed the association we printed the following goals: 1) To explore issues of spirituality as related to the practice of professional counseling; 2)To provide state leadership in moral and social justice issues within the practice of counseling; and 3) To contribute to the development of professional counseling in religious, private and public institutions.
Article IV, Section 3 of the NJASERVIC by-laws provides operating procedures for the election of officers. A) The Past President shall chair the Elections Committee. b) All members in Good Standing are eligible to hold office providing they are also members in good standing of ASERVIC. c) Ballots for Elected positions will be mailed at least thirty (30) days prior to the NJCA Spring Conference and be due by the annual Meeting of the Association at which time election will take place.
All members of NJASERVIC were asked or invited, on more than one occasion, to become more involved with the leadership of this association. Unfortunately, we no longer have an active board of directors. We do not have a president. Our last president resigned. We do not have an immediate past president. We are in danger of losing our status as a division of the New Jersey Counseling Association. Will we continue to exist in the New Millennium?
The NJCA "Spring" Conference ( now called annual conference) will take place at the Princeton Marriot Forestal Village, March 12-14, 2000. NJASERVIC will hold its annual meeting during that conference. Below you will find a ballot with the names of individuals who agreed to fill vacant positions and thus create an NJASERVIC Executive Board pending official election to office. A past NJASERVIC president (and current national ASERVIC Board Member), Dr. Philis Philipson, has agreed to serve as chair of a needed Election Process. This is as close as we can get to meeting the requirements of our by-laws.

The following Ballot is submitted to the NJASERVIC Membership
All Offices are two year commitments.
 President:
_____ Michael C. Lazarchick or _____ Write In Candidate ______________________
President Elect: _____ Write In Candidate____________________________________

Secretary: _____Tassie Livingston or _____ Write In Candidate________________________
Treasurer:_____Andrea Campbell or _____ Write In Candidate ________________________

I, ______________________________, vote for the above Checked choice _____.
              (sign your name)
You may Return this ballot or a copy to Philis Philipson to cast a vote or attend the election meeting in person. Philis Philipson, 112 Coppertree Court, Edison, NJ 08820

GOALS

  • IDENTIFY OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT You may have noticed that no one has yet agreed to be the president-elect of NJASERVIC. If you write in your name on the ballot, that just might be enough to win the election! The primary goal of this association will be to get someone to be president-elect or else, we are out of business. Isn't it time for you to step forward?
  • CREATE A PRESENCE ON THE INTERNET Vincent Poisella has agreed to be our Newsletter Editor. We are also going to put our Newsletter on the Internet attached to our Home Page. If any member does not have Internet Access, we need to know so that we can send you a paper copy either by FAX or mail. We do plan a Home Page on the Internet early during the Year 2000. We would appreciate the web address of any site that you believe would be appropriate linked from our page. Lets create a page worthy of this association. Please help.
  • UPDATE BY-LAWS We also need to revise our by-laws. They were written ten years ago and are out dated. We are moving into a new Millennium!
  • INCREASE COMMUNICATION Finally, we need to communicate. We need to know why you joined this association and how we might serve your needs. We need to create an exhibit for the Poster Session at the NJCA Annual Conference. Any creative artists types out there?

    PROCESS

Please send your electronic mail address to acting President, Michael Lazarchick , mlazarch@dol.state.nj.us or call during the day 609 561-8800 You will not be overburdened with electronic mail messages, but you will be kept informed concerning this association. You could include you thoughts about NJASERVIC and what you would like the association to address. If you do not have electronic mail, you can send a letter to Michael at 7414 Driftwood Lane, Weymouth, NJ 08330 or call during the working day (609) 561- 8800. The bottom line is simply, we are trying to determine if this division should continue to exist!

Reprinted from our April 1990 Newsletter, ONE/HALF HOUR A DAY. The subject was the global crisis. The words were startling, yet clearly they were based on undeniable truths. The speaker was dynamic and asked for one half hour a day. One half hour doing anything to help mother earth heal herself. The lady was old and crippled with arthritis. Her income was quite limited. Most of her friends had died, so time was not a problem. But, "What" she asked herself, "can I do?" When the idea came she chuckled in response to a flash of an ancient learning, "Ask and ye shall receive." The growing amount of litter in her neighborhood park had been bothering her for years. Gathering up trash for one half hour a day made her feel good inside. And then, when others observed her, and began to help, the park actually began to look much better. Spring rain brought abundant wild flowers. She felt silly thinking Mother Nature was crying from Joy. One thing, however, was quite clear. From all her daily bending, her back felt really good and she was truly amazed that she could now touch her toes again after so many, many years.

Acting President's Message: I need Help. The strength of this association is the collective will of all those who participate. Lets put in a little time and effort, clean things up and watch some flowers bloom!
