Chapter 3

A Couple Hours Later

Brian's View

"Do you think she'll be alright?" I asked pacing back and forth in the waiting room. We have been at the hospital for a couple hours now and we haven't heard one thing about Tiffany. I was scared out of my mind.

"I don't know Brian, I really hope she's alright," Kevin said softly. Everyone was looking at me pace the room. The kids were handling it pretty well but they do cry off and on. They are scared that they might lose their mother but I don't blame them for being scared. I'm scared of losing my friend, my wife, my lover, and my soul mate.

"Brian maybe you should sit down. You've been pacing this room for over an hour now," Colleen suggested.

"I can't, I'm too nervous and scared right now," I said shaking my head.

"Why don't we go get a cup of coffee or something?" Nick suggested starting to get up.

"No, I want to be here when the doctor comes."

Nick sighed and sat back down.

"Lets just pray for her," Darlene said. Everyone nodded and became quiet. I've been praying for her and I don't know if it's doing one damn thing!

"Mr. Littrell?" A doctor asked walking into the room. I stopped pacing and rushed up to him. Everyone else sat up straight or leaned forward to hear the news.

"How is she? Is she alright? Is she going to survive?" I asked fidgeting with my hands.

The doctor sighed and said, "She has a heart problem..."

"I know that and so does she!"

"Now let me finish," he said. I sat there waiting for him to continue.

"Now her heart condition has been kept under control for quite some time and the medicine that she has been taking had helped her out a lot. It's actually what has been helping her stay alive and sadly the medicine has stopped working."

"What do you mean it just 'stopped' working?" I asked.

"I mean it stopped working, exactly what I said. It no longer slows her heart down when needed."

"Then what is she supposed to do?" I asked worried.

"We'll get to that but don't you want to know how she is?" he asked.

"Of course!"

"Right now she is in a coma. We got her heart to beat at a regular pace but all the blood that it was pumping to her head just got too much for her. We think she'll be alright but you never know. We are watching her closely."

"You just think she'll be alright?" I asked.

"That's all we can say right now, I'm sorry."

"When can we see her?"

"Not now, maybe tomorrow. We still need to run some tests," he said.

I sighed and said, "Thank you doctor."

I walked back over the guys and stood there looking at all their worried faces. I looked down at the ground not saying a word pressing my lips together firmly. Tears were forming in my eyes and I could feel them escape my eyes and slide down my face.

I broke down crying.

Nick stood up and opened his arms and wrapped them around me.

"I'm so sorry Frick," he whispered in my ear. I just sobbed into his shoulder.

"She'll be alright," Kevin said patting my back. I backed away from Nick and hugged Kevin. "I promise."

"I don't want to lose her," I cried.

"I know you don't," Kevin said hugging me tightly. I turned my head and looked at everyone. They were all crying too. I guess I caused a chain reaction or something.

"Daddy, is mommy dead?" Courtney asked running up to me. I picked her up and hugged her tightly.

"No, mommy is not dead and she's not going to die. She's going to be alright," I said softly. She just hugged me tightly and cried into my shoulder.

"Why don't we all go home and get some sleep," Howie suggested. Everyone nodded and started to get up.

"Maybe I should stay here," I said.

"No no no no. You need to get home and get some sleep," Kevin said sternly.

"But what if she wakes up?"

"I don't think that's going to happen for a while Bri," AJ said softly. I sighed deeply and nodded my head slowly. "I guess you're right."

"Come on," Nick said pushing me lightly toward the door. I walked out of the hospital into the warm night air and crossed the parking lot to my car. Michelle and Christian each had one of the babies and Courtney was in my arms. Jason just slowly walked behind everyone with his head low.

I opened the door and gently set Courtney down. I buckled her in and then put the babies in their car seats. Michelle got in the car sniffling and Christian got in the car with his hat pulled down low over his face (I don't think he wanted anyone to see that he was crying) and Jason got in quietly, his face looking blank. I frowned at the sight of all of them. This wasn't the family that I was used to seeing.

I turned the car on and slowly backed out of the parking lot. Nick waved to me as he was getting into his car. I slightly waved back and continued driving down the road. I knew I should get some sleep because I was tired as hell but I just can't sleep knowing that my wife is in a hospital bed maybe dying. How could anyone sleep knowing that simple fact?
