Chapter 13

Kevin:

We were running late. I got to the arena and changed into my stage outfit in record time.

"Nice of you to join us," Brian teased in the chair next to me while having his make up done.

"Didn't realize how late it was," I said moving as little as possible.

"Sure you didn't," Brian bantered.

"Hold that pose," Durbbie said as a bring flash of light went into effect. She proceeded to "flash us"- as she like to call it- several times before running off in search of more film.

"That's Durbbie for ya," I said cracking a slight smile.

"Hold still," the make up artist said.

"Sorry," I murmured.

"I don't think she ever stops being like that," Brian said standing up from his chair.

"Wouldn't be the same if she stopped," I said shifting in my seat.

"You're done," the make up artist said. "You keep moving around. Just go out there and get your energy out."

I thanked her, and Brian and I headed out the door.

Melissa:

Durbbie and I got our stuff together and snapped some pictures during the show. Those guys love what they do and it shows in ever move they make.

"I can't believe we're leaving in just a few days," I said packing up my equipment and slinging it over my shoulder.

"Tell me about it," Durbbie said She took a longing glance towards the stage.

"What is it?" I asked concerned.

Durbbie caught herself and snapped back to reality. "Nothing. Just tired."

"Do you want to go back to the bus?" I asked. When Durbbie gets tired, she gets exhausted. I didn't want to take any chances with her.

"Nah. I'll stay here."

"You sure?" I asked.

"Yeah. I want to talk to somebody," Durbbie answered simply.

After The Show

Durbbie:

"The piano still here?" I asked a roadie.

"Right over there," he pointed.

I sat down on the piano bench and started tinkering around.

"Does that piece have a name?" a sudden voice asked. I immediately stopped playing and turned around.

"AJ you scared me," I said.

"What's that song called?" he asked again.

"Romance," I said.

"Who wrote that? Mozart, Bach?"

"Tobias," I answered shyly. AJ's jaw started swinging freely.

"You wrote that?"

"Yeah," I said turning back into the piano. "Haven't playing it in a while though." This was the only thing I was shy about: my music. It's a reflection of who I am, and it's a side of me not many people are allowed to see.

"It's beautiful," AJ said returning me back to reality. I was suddenly aware of him standing near me. "Do you have any other pieces?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

He took a seat next to me on the bench. "Can I hear one?"

I took a deep breath and started playing one of my favorite pieces that I've written called "Tonight." I finished playing. AJ had a mixed expression on his face and I couldn't read it. "It's got lyrics to it. It sounds a lot better with them," I said offering an excuse to possibly change his mind for the better.

"Can I hear them?" AJ asked.

I stood and shrugged. "Maybe another time," I said motioning to the crew who were waiting for us to finish. "I think they want to get going."

"Yeah," AJ said quietly while taking my hand off the keys and into his hand. "The others are going to worry."

AJ:

"But if you've got any other stuff, I'd love to hear it," I said honestly.

Durbbie did a shy shrug. Was she actually being timid? "You OK?" I asked as we started to walk back. "You're really quiet."

"I was thinking about something," she replied softly.

This was what I was afraid of. "Scott?" I asked.

Durbbie nodded sadly. "I still love him." I didn't know what to say, so we walked in silence for a little while. "Can I have a hug?" she asked in a meek voice.

I stopped in my tracks and pulled Durbbie near me. She seemed to disappear in my arms. She simply dissolved. Was this the same Durbbie that was here this morning?

I saw that her breathing pattern changed. It was more choppy and she was sniffling. So I did the only thing I COULD do: I held her close to let her know that I was always there for her.
