Interview

"A Quick Q&A" by Seth Garrett.
(note: this is supposed to appear in some zine, who knows. -Dizzy)

SG: What's the band? The Site? Anything else?
DL: Big Bop. www.angelfire.com/nj/bigbop.

SG: What's the bands sound like for those who don't know?
DL: It's mostly noise. I don't mean like "noise rock", just noise. At least that's what a lot of people say.
But there are elements of jazz, progressive rock, death metal, a bunch of it. It mostly sounds like
a few guys improvising with various degrees of success.

SG: It's also got a lot of electronic stuff, right?
DL: Not really "electronic" like people might think. Just a lot of synthesizer and things. And none of us
can play this thing right or program it or anything. It was given to me a few years back by someone
who didn't have any use for it and so we just try and get good sounds out of it. I'm sure really synth
players would make fun of us to no ends about using presets and just doing obvious stuff, but I don't
care. Guitar is my "real" instrument.
SG: If you read the song titles and listen to some of the songs you get the idea that you guys are kidding
around with a lot of your stuff. Is that true?
DL: Hmm. I don't know. I'm not putting this **** out saying "This is ******* art! It's really serious!" but I like
how it sounds. It might be "tongue in cheek", but I still enjoy hearing a lot of this stuff. I might
be the only one, but I would listen to Big Bop if it was by somebody else. At the same time it's hard
to hear a song like "*** ****** *****" and not think it's a big joke. So, basically.. I guess it's just a
little of both. Who knows.

SG: You play a lot of the stuff on the album? Are the other people just additional people, or is it a true
band?
DL: Nah, it's a ******* band. I wish Damien was on it a whole lot more, but we live in different towns and it's hard to get him
in for stuff. We'd be 100x better if he was on everything. Steve just pretty much plays what I tell him to, and that's what he likes.

SG: Ok, now the influence question?
DL: Hmm. Ok, I listen to a lot of obvious stuff. Naked City and a few of the other John Zorn projects..
I really like Secret Chiefs Trio and Mr. Bungle, then progressive stuff like King Crimson &
Marillion. I used to be into a lot more "prog" stuff, but those are about it now. I like Godflesh,
Scorn, some more "messed up" jazz stuff, Praxis, there's a ton of stuff really. And it changes
all the time, so a month from now I might hate this stuff. I don't know exactly what Damien listens
to. I think Zorn and I know he's way way into Fripp & Crimson, and then there are a bunch of
other bands, but I can't really think of em off the top of my head. Then the third "creating" member,
Steve, his taste doesn't effect what we do. He just plays. I think he likes a lot of rap. He got mad
about the song "I got arrested for making fun of the Beastie Boys". The rest of the crew, who
knows.
SG: And any words to people reading?
DL: Yeah. Go check out our website at www.angelfire.com/nj/bigbop. You'll get a good idea of what
we're like. Also join our mailing list by emailing NoRevival@otherarena.com or MensTeoh@Rinx.com. And that's about it.
