Make a Weather Journal

I. (Page 1) Demonstrate how the instruments are used.
Give the purpose of each of
the following instruments: anemometer, wind vane, barometer, thermometer,
rain gauge, psychrometer,
Doppler radar image, and a satellite image.
Describe how each operates
and why it is used.
Draw a diagram of all
of the instruments.

II. (Page 2) In order to become familiar
with the various meteorological tools, record the measurements of
each of the
following. Make daily observations at about the same
time each day for a period of two
weeks.
Construct a table
to record the :
| Date | Time | Temperature | Presssure | Humidity | Precipitaion type
and amount |
Wind speed
and direction |
Cloud cover | Current
conditions |

Do you see a relationship between today's weather
activity and tomorrow's weather?
III. (Page 3) Answer the following questions in
your journal.
Questions
1. What has the temperature
done over the last twenty-four hours?
2. What has the pressure done
over the last twenty-four hours?
3. What has the wind speed
done over the last twenty-four hours?
4. Can you make any conclusions
about a steady barometer reading, a rising barometer, a falling
barometer?
5. What happens to the weather
conditions as humidity increases?
6. If the moisture content
of
the air remains the same what happens to the relative humidity as the
temperature goes down?
7. Did you see the relationship
between your air pressure measurements and the weather conditions?
8. Can a barometer help you
to predict the weather? Explain.
IV. (Page 4) After observing
the weather conditions and changes for several days, try to predict the
following
day's weather conditions. Create a table in which you record the
date and time, today's conditions relating
to tomorrow's weather, and predictions for tomorrow's weather.
| Date and time | Today's conditions relating
to tomorrow's weather |
Predictions for
tomorrow's weather |
V. (Page 5) Long Range Forecast (Predict weather for the next 5 days)
After completing the study of the sources of data
for weather forecasting, practice using the skills of
meteorologists. Apply the knowledge and
experience you gained about weather elements and weather
trends to make a long-range weather forecast.
Be sure to include the following in your forecast:
temperature, precipitation, cloud type, wind
speed and direction, barometer reading, and relative
humidity. Remember to refer back to satellite
and radar images in addition to your collected data.
Describe the conditions you expect for the
next five days. Explain why you expect these conditions for
each day. Give specific reasons and state
specific facts that make you think these conditions will occur.
Finally, rate yourself. How accurate were
you in making your forecast? If you were wrong, what
caused your error.
