Chapter 21.2 Notes (Fossil Fuel Resources)

Our energy can be traced to the sun.
Sun  
Plants (which produce sugars) 
animals which eat plants 
plants and animals die (some of their stored energy remains) 
become fossil fuels over millions of years



Types of fossil fuels:
Coal - forms from plants, on land
    Peat  lignite  bituminous coal  anthracite
Petroleum       form from plants and animals
Natural gas      in areas once covered by oceans

Uses

Environment - mining
                       oil spills
                       burning of - causes pollution
                       global warming
