I remember the 70's although I was only a
kid
at that time but I still recall people
saying......
Many Different radio stations tried to play dance
music but they failed. In the 1980's we had a radio
station 103.5 WAPP they switched over and became HOT
103 they became a New York Dance Station. They
started many different things including the "Saturday
Night Dance Party", "Hot 103's Classic Showcase
on sunday night" After a few years they swaped places
with a country station 97.1WYNY.
They Became HOT 97 After a few years they changed there format to R&B and Hip Hop. Everyone who was working at HOT97 left including a good friend of mine NIECE COLON. When the station changed formats Freestyle died! Dance music left the airways completely no one played it. Accept for The saturday night dance parties.
95.5WPLJ tried to do what HOT97 has done buy Starting SaturdayNight at the 70's. There success wasn't even close to HOT97.
In 1996 WKTU hit the New York Airways Again.
Thanks to Evergreen
Media and Frankie Blue.
Frankie Blue is no stanger to New York Radio. He
worked at Z-100 and brought that station to #1 in the
ratings and started the Love Phones which was the
most listened to evening show with Dr. Judy. That
show doesn't exist anymore. Frankie is one of the
best Program Director's In history according to Billboard
Magazine He also made Radio history when he left
New York Radio and Went to Miami Florida. He became
the program director of THE BOX is a music video
channel that you control. With this mans success
Evergreen media contacted him to bring Dance Music
back
to New York Radio. He even hired Sean "Hollywood"
Hamilton which worked for him at Z-100.
I
remember DJing for a MDA fund raisier and working
with Joey B. From 95.5 WPLJ When I first read the
press release in the Star Leadger I said to my self
WHO IS JOEY B? Then I remembered that he was a
Roller Rink DJ from "AMERICA ON WHEELS" in
Livingston which has since closed for many years!
Since that show I worked with him at Many diffrent
events including a Pinball tornament which was held
at Sports Park U.S.A. He became the KTU morning show
producer.
Last Memorial Day Weekend in 1996. Frankie put together a show "Last Dance at Studio 54". Studio 54 was a Huge well known Night Club In NYC on 54th street. Studio 54 was only open for private parties for many years and the owners decided to close the doors forever. WKTU wanted to give the legendary night club a farwell they had the painters and electricians come in to make the place look perfect they even sanded down the dance floor to refinish it! People were going crazy to get tickets to this event. One lady sang "LAST DANCE"for 24 hours strait, One guy got naked and pasted KTU bumper stickers all over him self and got arrested, Some one else made a HUGE KTU Banner and sailed the hudson river with it. Just to list a few.
This was the biggest Radio Station Promotion in History. There was so many acts that took the legendary stage including Gloria Gaynor, Suduction, RuPaul, Alisha, Donna Summer, Cher, and Many more popular acts . I tried so hard to call the station and get tickets but they were always busy. So I went to the KTU studios in Jersey City and went into the lobby to see Frankie but the receptionist told me he was in a meeting, Two hours go by and I walk up to her again she told me that he's busy and can't talk to me anyway I seen Joey and I talk to him. I ask the recepionist one more time so she got the assistant program director. I talk to him and he just flat out told me NO! I couldn't belive that! after all that time waiting because I'm not a famous person he didn't care.
I'm
a professional Disc-Jockey Entertainer and How I was
treated at the studio I lost total respect for KTU it
seams to me they only care about there sponsers!
I
donate my Time and services to many different
organizations such as M.D.A., Cancer Care of New
Jersey, AIDS RESEARCH, The Burn Center at St.
Barnabus, PBA, PAL, FOP, FMBA, Volunteer Fire
Departments, EMS, Local Hospitals, And many other's.
I never ask
for anything in return but I see how people don't
care about anything accept themselves and
family's.
I'll give you another example They started this "ALL
STAR MIXER WEEKEND" that they choose local DJS from
The tri-state area. Sample tapes are sent in. Guess
what! I sent mine in and they
lost it! or never called me. That is another example
of Radio Station
Politics They choose who they want and its never buy
talent! Im just sick and tired of the lies.
I
worked with alot of oldies bands like Johnny
Maestro,
The Dupress, Larry Chance and the Earls, Danny and
the Juniors. These people are some that I worked with
and they are all nice and if I ever need something
all I
would have to do is pick up the phone! Not Beg for
something! Being a DJ for over 8 years I meet and
Help out many diffrent people. I belive that one
hand washes the other.
