I'd like to take the time to ponder Sea Monkeys. Yes, I know I've written episodes about Sea Monkeys before, but I really like the topic. First of all, why are they called Sea Monkeys? They don't look like monkeys. They don't even look like the pink things on the box (see above). Monkeys have two long arms. Sea Monkeys have several short arms. Monkeys eat bananas. Sea Monkeys eat the muck at the bottom of the tank. Monkeys are furry. Sea Monkeys simply aren't. Do you see what I mean? Nothing in common at all. I think they were called Sea Monkeys because the term is so incredibly random. Think about it, "Sea Brine Shrimp" just doesn't have the same ring to it. The people who came up with them must have been thinking "Hm, we need a name that is snappy, easy to remember, and makes people wonder what the hell we were smoking when we named it. Let's see, monkeys are spiffy, we could call them monkeys. No, wait, SEA MONKEYS because it sounds so neato!" At this point they wrote down the idea and a new era in randomness began. And an era in the back of comic books began as well. But that's another story.
