A Child Within

I looked into a mirror and look deep into my eyes,
I looked beyond my conscious mind and deep down inside my heart,
there behind a great wall I have found a child, helpless,
scared, and alone.
A child of abuse,
A child of fear,
A child of mistrust,
My child within.
My child had built a wall long ago to hide from what it
feared. It took time for him to let me near, Now he knows
he need not fear.
We sit and talk about what has been and our shared fear of what
is to come. We have come to understand how and why he came to be.
My inner child had hidden inside so long he never got to grow.
I have vowed to raise him, as I wish had been done for me long ago.
I hope someday he will grow to be able to smile, to trust, to have the life
that we both deserve.
