Daughter of Pomira

Beth plays a part that could have been over-acted very easily, but the quality of her work in 'The Tribe' can be seen in this episode of Xena.

The plot of the episode is that Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Reneé O'Connor) must rescue Vanesa (Beth Allen) from the Horde, a bloodthirsty tribe, whom we have met in a previous episode (The Price). Xena and Gabrielle do not get along well with the Horde.

Xena goes to the Horde's camp-ground and finds Vanesa, who screams as Xena tries to get her to leave - so Xena pinces her voice.

The Horde are following Xena and Vanesa so Xena creates a cave-in, leaves Vanesa with Gabrielle and sets a false trail for the Horde.

While she is gone, Gabrielle talks to Vanesa and finds out that Vanesa's Horde name is Pilee and that she is the adopted daughter of the chief of The Horde, Cirvik. She says that her people are not the Horde, but the Pomira, and they worship the sun, the land and anything that does not wish to destroy them - 'civilized' people. She says that the Pomira loves her.

As they arrive back in the town, Vanesa tries to scratch her father, Raul, and states that her father is Cirvik and he will come to get her and kill them all.

Vanesa puts on some 'regular' clothes and finds a doll she remembers. She calls Raul 'Father'.

In the middle of the night, Vanesa leaves the house, taking the doll with her. Xena convinces her to stay, saying that she can make peace between the Pomira and the villagers, using Vanesa, as she can speak both languages. The Horde speak a type of pig Latin.

The next morning, The Horde have come for Vanesa, who tells her parents, and Cirvik that she is going bac with the Horde, but will visit her family often.

Beth acts very well in this episode, conveying the hurt and anger of Vanesa well.
She gets some funny moments as well - a typical male pig is talking to Vanesa, Xena and Gabrielle in one scene. He makes a comment to Vanesa, who is still furious about being taken from the Horde, "Welcome back to civilization". In response, Vanesa kicks him in the face. At the end of the episode, Xena kills him.

Beth has one heck of a scream.

Vanesa: "You killers. You kill trees, earth, all. And when we say ‘no, go from here,' you kill Pomira."

Adiah: "Rahl, remember she's been gone a long time."
Rahl: "Maybe too long."
Gabrielle: "She's still your daughter."
Vanesa: "He hate Pomira.
Xena: "Pomira hate him and the rest of us. It's a bad situation all around."
Vanesa: "Many will die."
Xena: "On both sides, but you can stop that, Pilee. You understand both sides, both languages. You can act as a bridge between us, a way of communicating without killing each other."
Vanesa: "Why I care?"
Xena: "Because if you don't care, both your families get hurt."
Vanesa: "My family Pomira. Cirvik, his daughter die and he chose me for his daughter. He love me."
Xena: "I understand that, but you can make him understand that you have family here too, parents who love you, and who would die for you."

Vanesa: "Both, both my father."
Raul(father): "Vanesa, your mother and I want you to come home."
Adiah (mother): "Please, Vanesa ..."
Vanesa: "Pilee."
Cirvik: Lakota Toli. Bonai. Soli Bonai.
Vanesa: "Cirvik say, ‘no fight, no war.' Say, ‘family.'"
