Obviously, this page is about Jilas. But, what do you really know about this fox other than him being Valgaav's lackey and Gravos's sidekick? Who knows how much you know? But, this page also includes maybe a little bit of my insight. So, just how come Jilas has an eyepatch? Why does he faithfully take orders from Valgaav? This says it all about Jilas, although contains muy mucho spoilers.
Just how did Jilas end up as Valgaav's lackey, anyway? A totally loyal one at that! This was shown in an episode already, but I'll explain anyway. It occured during when his entire kind was slaughtered right before his eyes by--guess what?--humans.
Basically, Jilas is the last of the Red Fox species. His eye was gouged out, which explains the apparent eyepatch, and had a spear lodged into him. He was left on the ground to die, knowing his friends and family were killed. However, he saw a tall figure appearing before him...
At first, Jilas was frightened, but the tall figure, named Valgaav, took the spear out of Jilas and said he understood the fox's pain. Valgaav requested that, in return for loyalty, he could help Jilas gain revenge for his lost kind. In payment for Valgaav's kindness, Jilas had become very loyal to him.
As Gourry asked Lina, "Who was the real bad guy?" Who really knows? No one, in my book, is good or evil. There is right and wrong, just no pure good or pure evil. After all, many fans don't see Valgaav as a villain, but more as a victim; weren't Jilas and Gravos basically the same towards when they met Valgaav?
Although Jilas had been a "bad guy," so to speak, he became fond of Filia from who-knows-how-many-times she defended him. Maybe he shouldn't call her "oneechan," though. "I'm not anyone's oneechan!" Guess it makes her sound old. ^_^; What a temper.
Jilas seems to have a real thirst for vegence and dependence on his explosives and guns, but he's not just one of those dimwitted people you find. He can be a real genius at times, as well. For instance, he was capable of creating an bomb/rocket with the power of a Dragon Slave, and Jilas remarked to himself "That's only half of what it should have been." Who knows what Jilas is capable of?
Still, Jilas is not without compassion other than his grown fondness of Filia at the end of TRY. Around near the end of the series (middle, maybe?) Jilas was taken care of by a small family of foxes. Although not red foxes, as Jilas is, they were foxes nonetheless. Think of it this way: there are different kinds of dragons in Slayers. Golden dragons, ancient dragons, etc. However, Filia became the only golden dragon left of her clan, whom worshipped Karyuu-oh, in the world, such as Jilas is the only red fox left, etc.
Errr, where was I? Oh, yeah. The family. So, they took care of him, containing a mother and her son Palu. Jilas saved the family, but bent on his vegence, he kind of blew up the city, around the time he made that bomb as powerful as a Dragon Slave. At least the fox family's house wasn't within the city. ^_^; Lina and her crew survived the explosion, which caused Jilas to continue his revenge for Gravos and Valgaav, although neither are dead(explained in their profiles).
All in all, I suppose Jilas has a bit of a temper and obsession with technology. He can get very vengeful, which shows apparent protection to those who he calls a friend. Still, he probably doesn't like to be independent much, and I guess he really doesn't mind being just a lackey rather than "running the show."
