Endless Winter
chapter 2

The day following the first encounter with one of the generals of the Wind Princess the seven guardians gathered together and teleported to the barren North, where computer scans from several sources indicated the location of the Wind Princess’ castle.
“This must be the place,” Artemis said as he shook some snow from his back.
“It’s freezing,” Tara said, her teeth chattering, her fur fluffing out to trap more heat.
“We’ll make this as quick and as painless as possible,” Luna said as she nuzzled closer to Artemis, who had begun walking into the now blowing snow.
“Is it true that we can transform into our human selves?” Chloe asked Star. Tara and Spirit also wondered about that.
“Yes, we can become humans in times of extreme danger,” Star replied, swishing his tail about, “I transformed for Alex when he and his friend Kylie were in danger. I also transformed when Alex and Andrew needed my assistance. Artemis transformed for Mina when she was unable to transform and fight against the Dead Moon Circus. Luna transformed in order to help her astronomer man believe in himself again. We all transformed when we teleported to the World of Mana.”
“And all were in times of danger,” Diana said from atop Spirit’s head. She swished her tail back and forth before shuddering, “I’m freeeeeeezing.”
“We all are, Diana,” Spirit said, fluffing out his fur in order to give more heat to Diana, “How much further until we reach the castle?”
“According to the information we received from Josselin and our other computer literate experts, the castle shouldn’t be too much further,” Artemis said, “I just hope we can get the information we need soon.”
From the air before them came several blades of ice. The guardians leapt out of the way in time to avoid being skewered. Several more ice blades came from the space before them, all missing their marks once again, yet on several instances fur was ruffled and ears nicked.
“What is it?” Star asked as he rolled, his body glowing. A split second later a young man with long black hair lay where the black cat once was. He rolled onto his feet, a large energy sword forming in his hand.
“I am one of the generals of the Wind Princess,” an ice cold female voice said. A small cyclone of ice blades formed, giving way to a woman with deep blue hair and ice blue eyes. She was clad in a long dress of deep blue with ice blue and white trim. She also wore knee high boots of the same dark blue, and around each wrist were bracelets which seemed to be made of diamonds and ice. “Call me Chilla, of the south wind, and you’re in my playground.”
“I thought Frezon ruled the north winds,” Diana said, her tail twitching in displeasure.
“That loser is out on recon for the princess,” Chilla said, several large ice crystals forming around her, “So she left me in charge to play with our visitors.”
“I doubt it,” Artemis said as he dodged several more hails of crystal shards. He rolled and dodged, and a moment later a young man with long white hair and clad in white garments sat where Artemis was only moments earlier. The young man climbed to his feet, a silver sword with a crescent pommel forming in each hand. “Well Star, it looks like this whole transformation thing is totally legit.”
“Can we save it for later,” Luna said as she dodged several more hails of ice crystals, landing face first in a snow bank. From the bank came a woman with long, flowing black hair and a yellow and black dress that was battle ready. A staff similar to Sailor Pluto’s formed in her hands, a crescent shaped jewel set in the head of the staff, “Well, at least these bodies come battle equipped.”
“You’ll regret coming here,” Chilla hissed, “Snow Dancers, come forth and finish off this vermin!”
From the swirling snow came many women made of snow and ice, all identical. Diana leapt into a snow bank when she saw them, since they were identical to the ones the warriors and sailor soldiers fought when they met Frezon. From the snow bank came a girl with sugar pink, almost lavender hair, dressed in a frilly lavender sailor fuku / school uniform. In her hand formed a kaleidoscope like Sailor Moon’s or Chibi Moon’s.
“Go away evil woman,” Diana said, pointing the kaleidoscope at some of the snow dancers. A beam leapt from the wand with such force it knocked the girl onto her butt while at the same time melting several of the snow dancers.
“You nailed `em Diana,” Tara said, her body glowing. A moment later a woman with elbow length black and red hair stood where Tara had been seconds earlier. She was clad in black pants, a light brown top, and black boots. In her hands formed a golden bow, on her back a quiver of golden arrows also formed. In the time it takes to blink she had the bow notched with a golden arrow and was taking aim at some of the snow dancers. The arrow head burst into flame, the shaft shining a brilliant gold.
“I guess I’m the only one who still needs to transform,” Spirit and Chloe said simultaneously.
“You guys go and get the info we need,” Luna said, the jewel in her staff glowing and releasing a beam of lighting that struck down several snow dancers. Spirit and Chloe wasted now time in making tracks away from the battlefield. Unfortunately Chilla blocked their path with a well aimed hail of ice spears that formed a wall.
“Kitty’s are going to get skinned,” Chilla hissed as she phased in before them.
“Chloe, go!” Spirit said as his body glowed, his physical form changing to that of a man with auburn hair, a black shirt, white pants with black knee pads, and black boots. In his hand formed a large sword with a very jagged blade. “Lady, you just made a mistake in messing with me.”
“We shall see about that,” Chilla hissed, a sword of ice appearing in her hand. She swung, her sword meeting Spirit’s with a resounding CLANG.
‘I gotta get what the others need so that we can kick the butts of that Wind Princess and restore the world to how it should be,’ Chloe thought as she ran as fast as her kitty legs could carry her. Spikes of ice erupted from the ground around her, missing her by a few hairs breadths thanks to her cat agility. The further she ran, the faster the spikes appeared and the closer together they formed. ‘If I had to guess, then I must be getting closer to their base.’
A large spear formed in her path, which she ran right up and leapt from, her body glowing as she flipped through the air. The woman who landed had long silver hair that was pulled back in a ponytail and brilliant green eyes. She was clad in silver pants, silver boots, a silver jacket with a silver blouse beneath it, and a black sash around her waist. Around each wrist was a multitude of silver bracelets with many colored gems in each one. On her hip formed a scabbard that held a silver rapier with a golden pommel. Before her stood an elaborate palace made completely of ice and snow, which glowed the colors of the perpetually shining northern lights.
“This must be the castle of the Wind Princess,” she said, brushing some of her hair back behind her left ear, her dangling star earring swaying, “O.K., coordinates are set into memory, now to get some...”
Her sentence was cut off as one of the snow dancers attacked her from behind, catching her in the back and throwing her to the ground. Chloe flipped forward, going with the momentum and springing into the air, her hand going to her sword hilt. In a flash the blade was in hand and the snow dancer was only half the woman she used to be.
“You’ll never make it back to your friends,” an icy voice said. Chloe turned around to see Chilla standing directly behind her, a large ice spear in hand. Chilla swung, only to have Chloe go ginsu on the spear with her own sword, ice cubes and shavings flying left and right. When she neared the hand holds Chilla threw the remains down and commenced an all out icicle missile attack.
‘Come on girl, you have to pull it together,’  ran through Chloe’s mind as she ducked and dodged the almost endless hail of ice crystals. When all seemed lost a very large and jagged blade cut into the swath, a sea of flames erupting from it and engulfing all the ice missiles. “Spirit?!” Chloe said in disbelief, since his shirt and pants were in tatters.
“I thought I left you dead,” Chilla hissed in disbelief.
“A guardian doesn’t die so easily,” Spirit said, grinning somewhat sardonically. From around them came the other guardians, all a little worse off for wear, but still alive and kicking.
“We managed to best most of her army of snow dancers,” Artemis said, leaning on Star for support, a nasty gash on his left leg.
“And we know the limits of her powers,” Luna said, “and what it all comes down to is that she she’s more hot air than she’s worth.”
Chilla snarled before beginning a tornado spin. The twister increased in size, ice crystals added to the already powerful wind, turning it into a cyclone of death. The twister began to move towards the group, increasing in strength and size for every foot it moved.
“What do we do now?!” Diana asked as she backed up against Tara.
“The one course of action I can think of for any situation like this,” Tara said, “Run away!”
The group of guardians turned on heel and ran like the wind with the twister in hot pursuit. From inside the twister came a hail of ice shards, which rained down upon the already hurting group.
“We need to do something before we get cut to ribbons,” Star said as an ice crystal grazed his cheek.
“I’m as open to options as the next guardian,” Luna said as several shards clattered off of her staff, “we’ll wind up like the Sailor Soldiers after they tried to contain that energy source around the Mugan School.”
“They were really worn out after that,” Artemis said, “but we need an attack plan.”
“Why not double around back and hit her from behind?” Chloe said, “If we split up she can’t possibly follow all of us.”
“I’m getting tired,” Diana huffed. A moment later she found herself lifted onto Spirit’s shoulders.
“Split up,” Luna shouted before turning hard left. The other guardians broke away as well, the twister halting as it tried to figure out who to go after. By the time it figured an attack plan the guardians had circled it and were prepared to attack.
“This isn’t possible,” Chilla hissed from inside the twister, “you’re not supposed to win.”
“You still haven’t learned that good triumphs over evil,” Artemis said, “and it’s a hard lesson to learn when you’re on the business end of attack spells and such.”
“I’ll destroy you all!” Chilla said before the twister grew exponentially in size, encompassing the guardians in the high winds and sharp objects.
“We have to hold on,” Tara said, the crescent moon on her forehead glowing. She took her bow in hand and notched a golden arrow, the head bursting into flames a moment later. “Someone give me targeting data please.”
“Angle is 47 degrees up and 16 degrees to your left,” Star said, “you’ll strike her out of the spin with that shot.”
“Be prepared to attack when she’s out of the spin.”
Tara released the arrow, which sailed easily through the tremendous winds and struck Chilla in the left shoulder. In the time it takes to blink the tornado ended, a very stunned ice general tumbling to the ground in a heap. the guardians circled around her quickly, weapons trained.
“This isn’t over,” Chilla hissed before she vanished in a tornado of snowflakes. “Mark my words,” her voice echoed, “I will be back and stronger than I am now!”
“Well gang, we know where the wind princess is,” Artemis said, “now we just need to get rid of those pesky generals and then take her out.”
“Don’t get so ahead of yourself,” Diana said, “the generals are strong individually, but if all four were to attack at once...”
“We need to hope that doesn’t happen,” Chloe said, “I have faith in the Sailor Soldiers and the warriors.”
“As do I,” Luna said, “now, let’s teleport home and report our findings.”

Several hours later the half frozen guardians sat on Rei Hino’s bed, all in cat form and huddled under a blanket. A saucer of hot cocoa was sitting before each one. In the room sat Rei, Mina, Alex, Cathy, Jubilee, and Dave.
“So you see,” Luna was saying, “we found the coordinates to her castle so you can teleport there when the time comes.”
“Which I hope will be soon,” Alex said, shivering in his turtleneck shirt, “this cold is not good.”
“First things first,” Chloe said before taking a sip of the cocoa, “we need to see how Iczer’s and Frigidara’s powers match up. We know that Chilla and Frezon are impressive, power wise...”
“But both have big egos,” Star finished before giving a little kitty sneeze.
“You poor thing,” Mina said, holding her handkerchief to Star’s nose. The guardian blew, a loud honking coming from his nose.
“Thank you Mina,” Star said, sniffling after he finished.
“You’re..... welcome,” Mina said, holding the used hankie in her fingertips.
“So now we need to find the other two generals and kick their butts!” Cathy said, punching her left fist into her right palm, “This oughta be fun!”
“Hold on a minute there girlfriend,” Mina said, “we should wait for them to come to us.”
“And by then the entire planet could be iced,” Dave said, slamming his hands onto the table they were seated around, “we need to do something NOW!”
“No matter how you look at it, it’s going to be difficult,” Alex said, sipping at some hot tea, “but we have important tactical data that will come in handy in the climatic final act.”
“That’s true,” Diana said before sneezing and going face first into her cocoa. She lifted her sopping wet face a moment later, licking around her face. “Mmmmm.... cinnaminny.”
