It was a very boring day in the Town of Newport,
NH. Alex West and his friends Tony Clough, Cathy Hingston, Jubilaton
Lee (Jubilee, to her friends), Derek Taylor, and Jess Philbrook were hanging
out at Alex's house. They were going through some stuff in the attic
because they were totally board and found an old treasure map.
"Woah!" Alex said when he opened the
map, "Now this is cool!"
"What is it?" Tony asked.
"It's a treasure map. A very old treasure
map, and the treasure is somewhere here in Newport."
"Woah!" Jubilee said, "A treasure here.
Let's move!"
They carefully followed the instructions on
the map to the location it stated. About half an hour later, they
ended up in Meadow Park in downtown Newport. They followed the map
to the landing by the river. There, they read the clue to the second
location.
"Let me see," Tony said, "This says:
Follow the trail for a mile and a half behind the center."
"What does that mean?" Derek asked.
"I think," Cathy said, "that it means
follow the path on the other side of the river to the next location."
"Ok," Tony said, "let's move."
They carefully crossed the river and followed
the path for a mile and a half, but found nothing. It was starting
to get late so they headed back to Alex's house, where they could rest
and take another look at the map.
Back at Alex's, they took another look at
the map and made a startling discovery.
"Holy cow!" Jess said, "This is too
strange!"
"What is it?" Jubilee asked.
"Well, I see it, but I don't believe it,"
Derek said, "Alex, your house..."
"... Is the exact center of the map,"
Alex finished, "That's why we couldn't get to the next location.
We didn't come back here first."
"Ok. Now that we know what we have to
do," Tony said, "when do we do it?"
"Right now," Alex said, "Let's move!"
They headed out through the brush lot behind
Alex's house and found a path. They followed it until they were totally
closed in by tall shrubs on each side of the path. A mile and a half
later, they ended up at a bay near a lake, overlooking a small island.
In the center was a very large, flat rock that looked sort of tipsy and
on the side, leading to it was a walkway of flat stones. They slowly
made their way over the path to the stone. Cathy jumped onto the
rock, and when it started to flip over, she jumped off and landed in Alex's
arms.
As soon as the rock flipped, Derek went up
and started to read off the next location.
"From this spot," Derek read, "go out
two miles to Funky Island. There, go half a mile into the jungle
from the east side and you'll find a temple and the directions to the next
location."
"Well, we can't leave for it now," Jess
said, "It's getting really late and we should head back for the house."
"Ok," Alex said, "we'll head back about
two in the morning."
They left the lake by the way they came, making
sure to mark the entrances to the path.
At two in the morning, they dressed in dark
colored clothes and left. To be sure that they didn't wake anyone
up, they went the Whitney Avenue way to the path.
As they hit the downhill slope, their feet
started to slip out from under them. It wasn't until they saw Derek
come screaming down the hill yelling, "Cowabunga!" while spinning
a glow in the dark yo-yo with one hand and screwing up the electricity
with his mutant power with his other hand. When the rest saw this,
Alex, followed by the rest, let their feet slide out from under themselves
and just cruise down the hill.
When they hit the bottom, Tony reached into
his pocket to get the map, but when his hand came up empty, he muttered,
"Oh, crap!" and dove into the underbrush. Derek, Jess, Jubilee,
and Cathy dove in after him and with their combine efforts, found the map
five minutes later.
With the map found, they continued on their
quest. By going Prospect Street for a while and cutting back over
someone's lawn, they found their alternate entrance to the path.
When they reached the bay and the rock, Tony
did something rather strange. He started to strip off his clothes
and dove in. Derek, Cathy, and Jess followed what he did. Alex
and Jubilee looked at each other and Jubilee said, "I'm not about to get
wet just so we can find some treasure!"
"I'm with you," Alex said, "besides,
I have a much drier way to get over there."
"Oh, and how are you going to do that?"
"Easy. Just hold onto me and you'll
see."
Jubilee wrapped her arms around Alex's chest
and held on for dear life. It wasn't until she felt a slight temperature
change around them that she opened her eyes and saw that they were flying,
Phoenix style.
Tony, Derek, Jess, and Cathy turned their
eyes skyward for a minute to see what was lighting their way and saw the
Phoenix streaking by towards Funky Island.
As soon as Alex and Jubilee landed, Jubilee
said, "That was totally amazing!"
"Yeah, that was quite a rush," Alex
said, "wasn't it."
When the other four arrived half an hour later,
Alex gave them their clothes so they could get dressed and get on with
their quest. A few minutes later, they were on their way to the temple.
They walked to the east side of the island,
using Derek's power's behavior to tell them which way was east. As
soon as they found the east side, Jubilee and Alex both used their powers
to light the area so they could find the entrance to the jungle.
A few minutes later, they found the wide, yawning hole that would lead
them to the Temple of Funkiness.
Slowly, they walked toward the entrance, Alex
in front, Jubilee in the back lighting the way. They crept closer
and closer until the darkness swallowed them up.
They walked for half a mile, watching the
shadows that danced off the trees and were produced by the light of the
plasmoids. A couple minutes later, their path was blocked by the
Temple of Funkiness.
They slowly circled around the outer perimeter
of the temple, searching for the stairs. They finally found a set
of rather rickety, moss - covered stone stairs on the north side of the
temple. Derek was about to start up when Alex said, "I'll go first
since I'm the lightest."
"I've got a better idea," Tony said,
"how about you use your Phoenix power to transport us up."
"Ok, I like your idea better. Hold on."
As soon as he said that, he unleashed the
power and the Phoenix power engulfed them. It streaked up to the
top of the temple, landed, and disappeared. Everyone was still saying
what a rush it was when Alex and Jubilee entered the temple. A couple
seconds later they called for the others.
"What is it?" Jess asked.
"We found the clue!" Alex said, "And
this one is a doozy."
"Well, what does it say?" Cathy asked.
"I think that Tony should read this one,"
Jubilee said, "he's the strongest one here."
"Ok," Tony said, "here it goes:
Fly like a bird to the frozen north, to the spot where the northern lights
shine bright, and the Phoenix may play. But be careful of the sreilognal
that lives there, or you'll be gone. At that spot, you'll find the
treasure and wealth of seven worlds."
"Now that is spooky!" Derek said.
"Well, we gotta' head back to the house to
get some supplies before we leave," Alex said, "Hold onto me this
time because I don't want to lose any of you when we fly Phoenix style."
They all held onto Alex as he used the Phoenix's
many powers of flight. They streaked out the entrance, into the cold
night air. They flew and landed the bay and the path. The firebird
that had encircled them disappeared and became Alex. This time, they
didn't talk about the rush, but headed straight for Alex's.
At Alex's, they entered through the back door,
turned on their flashlights, and started gathering supplies. They
met by the door five minutes later, loaded up with weapons to use in case
the sreilognal attacked them.
"Ok," Alex said, "let's get going.
Hold onto me really tight and close your eyes."
"Ok," Tony said, "let's do what he says!"
They all joined hands around Alex as he used
his Phoenix powers. They streaked through the sky at blinding speed.
People opened their windows to see what was flashing through the sky.
A few of those people were Alex's friends Steve Huff, Dan Jensen, Tod Whipple,
and Joss Tricot. When they saw the Phoenix and knew it was Alex,
they all took off, joined up, and followed Alex and the others to the frozen
north.
A few minutes after Alex and the others landed
and drew their weapons, Dan, Steve, Tod, and Joss landed and joined up
with them. After the greetings, Alex told them of the quest and the
sreilognal that lived there. That was when Tod spoke up.
"You said the sreilognal, right?" Tod
asked.
"Yeah," Alex said, "that's what I said."
"Well, switch that around and you get..."
"... langoliers!" Tony said, "Holy crap!
We'd better be extra careful!"
With that, they set out. Alex used his
Phoenix powers to see what was happening and if they were going in the
right direction. Derek did the same thing with his power. A
couple minutes later, the northern lights filled the sky. At that,
the Phoenix began to play in the sky. When the others saw that, they
closed in on the area. Alex descended to meet with them.
It took a couple minutes to find the exact
spot, but with Jess's psionic projectiles, they found the treasure.
They opened the chest and were instantly enlightened of their position.
They were all in grave danger in the area they were in.
It took a couple seconds for it to sink in,
but when it did, they saw the langoliers circling around them. The
giant, horrible mouths moved faster than the Phoenix had ever flown, but
that didn't matter.
"Oh, crud!" Steve said, "We're in it
deep!"
"Yeah, but I've got a plan," Alex said,
"everyone circle around me. I'll use my Phoenix powers to transport
us out of here!"
"So go for it already!" Tony said.
"Ok, here goes the universe!" Alex said.
With that, the Phoenix exploded out of Alex
and engulfed the entire group. The Phoenix streaked into the sky
and was gone from sight, but it returned a couple seconds later, in a very
steep dive.
"Ok, now everyone use your powers!"
Alex said.
"Here goes everything!" Jubilee said.
They all concentrated their powers on the
langoliers and vaporized the whole lot of them. They landed and all
of them felt a new power flowing through their veins. With the treasure,
their powers had matured fully. When they were used to it, they all
took off to head home.
As the first light of dawn broke the horizon,
the Phoenix streaked into Alex's back yard. Steve, Dan, Tod, and
Joss landed with them and they began talking about naming their group.
"I've got a great idea for a name!"
Alex said.
"Well, what is it?" Dan asked.
"The Mutant Crew!"
"Now that is a cool name!" Tony said,
"The Mutant Crew! Cool!"
When they finished talking, they took off
for newer adventures.
