Tip No. 7

Jump Cue-Bid Overcalls

What do you think when partner makes a direct overcall of 3H over Opener's 1H bid?

a) Partner has lost his mind, pre-empting in the Opponent's suit.
b) Partner wants me to bid something - but what?

The answer is b. Partner wants you to bid 3NT if you have a sure heart stopper. Partner has a running minor suit and enough junk in the other suits to risk 3NT if you have a heart stopper. If you don't have a heart stopper, bid 4C which partner may correct to 4D.

This is used primarily over a 1H or 1S opener. Most experts play that over a minor suit opener, an immediate bid at the 3 level in their suit is natural and pre-emptive.
