The uniqueness of the Scandinavian Royal Weddings does remain the fact that women wear their best jewels in their most awesome evening long dresses to attend the wedding, and the banquet and ball that usually follows. The wedding of HRH The Crown Prince of Norway and Miss Sonja Haraldsen surely allowed a rather splendid look at some historical pieces of jewelry, even if only men represented countries like Sweden, Belgium and The Netherlands.

The most fantastic parure was undoubtedly the one worn by Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark, who chose the fantastic Orange-Nassau Diamond and Pearl Parure to wear at the wedding. The tiara consists of eighteen arches from which hung swinging pear pearls and it was originally made for Princess Luise of Prussia, the wife of Prince Frederick of the Netherlands. Queen Ingrid the other pieces that compose the awesome parure: an elegant stomacher of diamonds, a round pearl and five pear-shaped hanging pearls; a stunning diamond necklace with eight round pearls and three pear-shaped hanging pearls; the earrings, consisting of a round pearl surrounded of diamonds and a pear-shaped hanging pearl.

On the eve, at the banquet offered by the Government of the Norwegian Kingdom, HM Queen Ingrid had worn the splendid Queen Desirée Diamond and Ruby Parure, which was part of her personal collection, as it had been given to her by her parents-in-law, King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine on the occasion of her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik, in 1935.

Queen Ingrid’s eldest daughter, HRH Princess Margrethe of Denmark, borrowed her mother’s Baden Palmette Tiara to wear at the wedding ceremony and subsequent banquet and ball. Queen Ingrid received this tiara from her granddaughter, Queen Victoria of Sweden, who had received it from her mother, Grand-Duchess Luise of Baden, for whom the tiara had been built in 1900. Queen Ingrid held this tiara until her death, and her daughter, Queen Margrethe, inherited the piece. She wore it to the weddings of both children of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise.

For the Government banquet on the eve, Princess Margrethe had worn the splendid Diamond Drop Tiara, which she had received as a 18th birthday present from her father, HM King Frederik IX, who had inherited the piece from his mother, Queen Alexandrine.

HRH Princess Margaretha of Denmark, born Princess of Sweden, wore, both for the wedding and the Government banquet, a diamond tiara from her personal collection, which had belonged to Princess Marie of Orléans, wife of HH Prince Valdemar and Princess Margaretha's mother-in-law. On both occasions, Princess Astrid of Norway, King Olav’s daughter, wore the Vasa Diamond Tiara, which had been a present from the people of Sweden to her late mother, Crown Princess Märtha of Norway. Princess Ragnhild, the other daughter of King Olav and the late Crown Princess Märtha, wore at the wedding Princess Ingeborg’s Circle Tiara, originally owned by her granddaughter, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden, mother of Crown Princess Märtha. At the banquet held by the Norwegian government she had worn the much bigger Grand Diamond Tiara, originally owned by Queen Maud.

Both Countess Ruth of Rosenborg and Countess Madeleine Ullens de Schooten wore diamond tiaras, while HRH The Grand-Duchess of Luxembourg wore an Emerald Tiara, which she rarely wore as a tiara but more often as a necklace.
