DOES FAITH COMETH IN THE MORNING?
Does faith cometh in the morning?
"When Christ calls a man, he bid him come and die."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1938
Rumors tells us
liberation is only days if not hours away,
I will not let my soul get excited,
for we have all heard these voices before,
my cell mate tells me it is a trick the
Gestapo uses to give us false hope,
I don't know, God will decide if I am to
live or to die,
yet, I very much want to see the end of this war,
to forge a life after peace comes to us in the Springtime,
but am I deserving of such grace
when better men than me have been slaughtered
for the devil's appetite?
At night, I press my hands against the cold
concrete wall,
I cannot feel the presence of the Master,
I am afraid, as much as any man,
but I a theologian must carry
extra faith to distribute it
from the depths of my soul
to those who need it more than me?
funny,
how other men tell me I am so strong
in the face of bombs and the Gestapo,
offering up prayers and encouragement
it helps give the other hope and strength,
yet, from what strength do I gather such
courage,
is it the illusion of Judas,
or the blessing from our risen lord?
I hear boots marching towards me.
Here, they are coming for me,
hurry the push me out into the sunlight,
some of the guards and other prisoners
are crying,
I am ordered to be stripped naked,
to join the millions of others murdered
by righteous and normal man,
I walk upon death's gallows,
I am going to a new life,
who will carry His torch for me.
Behold the man.
