She stood in front of the mirror
Touched her chest where her breast had been,
Part of her womanhood had been taken away
She will never be the same again.
While doing a self-breast examination
A small lump she did find,
Terror gripped her soul
Terrible thoughts went through her mind.
Her mother had breast cancer
The disease claimed her mother's life,
She feared she would be the next victim
The thought cut through her like a knife.
She made a doctor's appointment right away
She prayed that lump wasn't a sign,
She had to know what she was facing
It was a race against time.
The doctor sent her for a mammogram
The lump showed up on the screen,
Dazed, she returned home
This had to be a bad dream.
The results came back positive
Her breast would have to be removed,
To prevent the cancer from spreading
If not her life she would lose.
Checkup after checkup
The results were alwayd good,
Her body was free from cancer
Just like she prayed it would.
She now lives a happy life
Her faith has been restored,
She still does self-breast examinations
Breast cancer cannot be ignored.
