The Standard, or type II, format is currently the most popular
and widely played format in the Magic community. The legal sets consist of the most
recently released basic set (currently 6th edition), and the last two expansion blocks
(at time of writing, Mercadian Masques is a week off being Type II legal, when it will
replace the Tempest Block. Urza's Block is the other legal block.) It gives a comparatively
small card pool, and it allows newish players to compete on an even level without shelling
out hundreds of dollars on a full set of dual lands, for example. Recently, the format has
been dominated by very fast, very lethal speed decks and combo engines. However, the advent
of Mercadian Masques and its increased casting costs should put an end to that. So what options are
we left with? Below we have a variety of decks that should see tournament play in the post-apocalyptic
type II world.
It's not as powerful without Pandemonium, Intuition and Hermit Druid, but this deck is
capable of a turn 4 win, probably better when the pros get hold of the idea.
This deck has the potential to dominate. It lost virtually nothing when Tempest rotated out, and
gains nasty stuff like Megatherium and the Hunting Wumpuss.
Ask Kai Budde how good this deck is. It also doesn't lose much, well except a certain 1cc artifact
from Tempest. Can't think of the name...
Yes you read that right. The two former speed kings are now reduced to a control deck, with
such great cards as Thrashing Wumpus, Seismic Mage and Pillage.
The old black staple has returned, with Specter's Wail and Subversion to make it worse. And you
won't believe the kill card...
