Undertaker (1CD)

- RCD-004
- Review
-
- DISC LENGTH : 78:00
- OVERALL SOUND QUALITY : VG/VG+ on the 6/8/94 material/EX- on
The Undertaker.
- SOURCE: Tracks 1- 6 are taken from the unreleased 1993 Paisley
Park film, The Undertaker. The remaining tracks are taken
off of video from the satellite feed of the 6/8/94 performance at
Glam Slam Miami. All tracks are soundboard recordings.
- COMMENTS : Sound quality on the Undertaker tracks is superior to
that of the audio off of my video copy which is fairly excellent
in itself. The performance itself is quite rewarding displaying
Prince's true powers on the axe. The only disappointment is
surprisingly the short & lackluster performance of a song that
is in the elite among his newer tracks, Dolphin. A high
quality equalizer on your system can do wonders for the sound on
this by potentially pulling it up to the excellent range.
The 6/8/94 Glam Slam performance is unique in that it contains a
one-time only rendition of 'Shoop' wich contains a smoldering solo
by you know who on bass. The live version of 'Loose' is also rare
and comes off with a high amount of energy in what must be a very
dificult song to revive in concert since the studio version is so
sonically perfect. I compared the sound on the CD very closely to
the HI FI mono 1st generation copy I have on video of the show and
it really doesn't come close. The video is far superior in highs
and lows. The sound on the CD is still enjoyable but comes from an
inferior tape source to those that are in circulation.
Pacaging is reminiscent to that of the 'Yellow' CD in which it is
made to look like a genuine soundtrack, including film credits.
The foldout booklet includes lyrics to the title track.
- RECOMMENDATION : The first great feature of this CD is that it
manages to include two great performances all on one CD. If this
CD contained only The Undertaker songs I would still
reccommend it so the inclusion of the 6/8/94 gig is more of a
bonus. Unless The Undertaker is officially released this
is a very suitable addition to any collection.
- This album is pretty good, but it's 55% live material.
If you want GOOD live versions of Billy Jack Bitch,
Shoop, It's Alright, I Believe in U
and Maybe Your Baby, then buy THIS album. The
The Most Beautiful Girl in the World live track is
terrible -- the vocals are weak. The Ride is good
if you like BLUES music, which I don't. Poor Goo is WEAK.
Bambi sounds very good, even as good as the original
version on the 1979 album Prince. The Undertaker
and Honky Tonk Women are good ROCK songs. Dolphin
is also included, but I hate it! Also, I don't think the full
version of Dolphin is on this CD. I bought this CD for
$24.00 -- it's probably worth $20.00 (if you listened to it).
Don't pay a lot for it....try to get it at a cheaper price.
Out of 10, I give it a 8. The CD quality is B+.

- Review
- For those of you who are looking for great Prince guitar
playing and an amazing bootleg of Purple Rain, check out "Under The
Spanish Moon" if you haven't already. The whole show is full of
amazing guitar stuff, especially the Purple Rain solo. There's also a
beautiful version of Nothing Compares 2 U which beats the Hits
version by far. It's an amazing concert.
- Low quality sound, songs cut up, a miss.

Unreleased Mixes (1CD)
- Label
- ODY 11 Nelson Mix 1
- Review
-
- This one would fit perfectly into the HITS series. The
pictures on cover and booklet are taken from THE HITS CDs and
also the letters were "stolen". The CD contains 10 remixes of
Prince Hits. All were professionally made but most of them are
really stupid. For example the Dive With The Whales
version of 1999! It's the normal 1999 song with pouring water and
singing whales in the background :-)
- Same layout as The Hits. No cat#, no label stated. There's only a
remark concerning it's promotional use. The recording is said
to be DDD, and the middle part of the CD itself (where there's
usually the cat# again) shows the following: ODY 11 Nelson Mix 1.
Some of titles are listed with slightly different spellings
(Tracks 3, 4 (SOTT), 9). I think it's an unusual kind of boot.
Most of the mixes seem as if somebody has played around with a
sampler and some digital effects... *Original* mixes would make
more use of dividing, adding and editing *single* instruments
(not the song as a whole). Yet it's the (sound) quality of studio
recordings.
