Sabotage's second major release (Driving 2 Midnite Mess was the first) is a potpourri of live performances and material from 1995. Each CD once again comes in its own case with a killer foldout booklet. The booklet for disc 1 is the most fascinating. It looks like a promotional tool for Paisley Park studios with gorgeous photos of the inside of the entire complex as well as full studio information. Booklet #2 includes full lyrics to Volkswagen Blues and Chaos and Disorder. Booklet #3 is dedicated to Mayte and features a reproduction of the marriage certificate. Very creative designing.

The Love 4 1another shows here don't offer anything that similar previous releases do except for Starfish and Coffee, which comes from the post video shoot performance on 10/10/95. Quality varies a little on these shows, but most is very good, in particular the 6/17/95 show which improves a great deal after getting a way from screaming female fans at the beginning. The quality during the Glam Slam Boogie on disc 2 is about as clear as an audience recording can be, if we could just get rid of the nearby screams. Full descriptions of all 3 live performances here can be found in Uptown issues # 20 and # 21.

My personal highlight here is the perfect quality copy of the new version of the Madhouse 24 album. This is different than the unreleased version that came out on a bootleg last year (and reviewed by me). An absolute killer jam on Marvin Gaye's Got 2 Give it Up is perhaps the musical highlight of this 3 cd set and features lead vocals by Nona Gaye. This album is funky, in a different style than as on Exodus but almost as equally compelling.

The opening NPG interview is interesting but more of the same that we've heard before really. Each member describes how the man's work habits have made them the best they can be, etc. The bonus mix of Rock 'n Roll is Alive is the same as on the double CD Fate and in similar quality. The opening version of Mad is a an audience recording of the studio version featuring our hero on lead vocals. I do believe that this is the first and only time that this version has surfaced.

Please note that I'm listing the 3 song post video shoot as 10/10/95 rather than 10/7/95 as the CD sleeve dictates. I'm taking the 10/10 date from Uptown # 21. If anyone wants to disagree with the date please write me and convince me so I can make the correction, but for now I'm going with the date in Uptown.

Recommendation
This would not be essential if it weren't for the perfect copy of the new Madhouse album. If 24 continues to be unreleased it will just make this collection more a gem. The Love 4 1another shows are not a must if you already own The Park or Open Sessions material, but packaging here is definitely an added bonus.

Review by bobbink@telebyte.nl
The First disc is superb! In perfect quality if not soundboard, esspecially the songs from 6-19 make the first disc a must to have. Really Greattt! The Second disc is IMHO a way of making extra money for the bootleggers. Most of us probably already have The Undertaker which was released earlier as a bootleg and the differences (which there are because this is a bootleg of the unreleased cd and the earlier one was a bootleg of the official video and they do differ) but those slight differences don't make it worth to have. If I make a hint to the one who made it; Please next time make separate studio cd's and separate live cd's don't make a combination of them! Don't you make enough money yet?

Recommendation
In total even if the 2nd cd is a waste of your money, the first disc is superb and a must to have!

Two more outstanding club shows here showing the NPG in prime form. Both shows share only Get Wild as a common track, thus giving us two entirely different gigs to enjoy. Highlights from disc 1 are the drastically different renditions of Days of Wild and Get Wild. The former sounds as fresh as ever in its half speed mode and segues perfectly into a slow jam version of Hair. An unrecognizable version of Get Wild is followed by a killer version of Sex Machine. The last half hour of the show here is pure excitement. Non stop jamming with our man at his improvisational best. The show on disc 2 is a much more guitar oriented effort whereas disc 1 concentrated more on James Brown style funk. New songs such as Zannalee and Pussy Control shine here but the final jam session of Endorphinemachine and Peach clearly finishes off every last patron of the club. The rhythm guitar instrumental break during Pussy Control & the opening teaser of People Get Ready clearly show our man's creativity is still firmly in tact. Doesn't this man age or what? Packaging is typically wonderful. Great inner sleeve balcony photo from some aftershow (does anyone know if this photo is from one of these 2 gigs?). Another fine installment in the series of club shows we've been inundated with.

Recommendation
You didn't have to be at these gigs to feel the musical excitement here. The inclusion of the newer NPG tracks (Zannalee, etc..) further enlighten this very worthwhile set.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
What better time to live or be near Minneapolis than in the fall of 1995 with the introduction of Love 4 1another? Well over a dozen shows played in the span of nearly 3 months that were open to the public for a mere $20 per show (only $10 towards the end). Remarkable in that no two shows were even remotely the same which for fans like us showcased Prince's most overlooked traits, his spontaneity and creativity. Sure the man can jam on guitar and bass like no other but how thrilling it truly is to stand in front of the man and just guess at which number he's going to play next from his enourmously vast catalogue. This 4 cd set features 3 of the first shows played. With crowds of usually only two or three hundred people present, sound quality here is great. My personal highlight of this set is the crystal clear quality of his opening medley of Sometimes it Snows in April / A Case of You on disc 3. Quality couldn't sound better, nor could Prince's vocals. Thrilling and touching at the same time.

There are highlights here for every Prince fan, ranging from the aformentioned acoustic numbers to the recent & unreleased NPG collaborations such as Mad (which is mind blowing to experience live) and the new O(+> classics like Zannalee. There are so many moments that have to be expereinced in person to be appreciated. Such as our hero's stunning purpleaxxe jam during Race / Girls & Boys / Superhero on disc 3. At least the sound quality here does this justice, but only seeing is believing.

Packaging is tremendous. Beuatiful, dream-like booklet centers around the recent Versace photos that have appeared in several fashion mags such as Esquire, etc. Complete track listings along with full lyrics to the unreleased Emancipation cut, and professionally designed discs make me struggle to find any faults here.

Recommendation
A gem and a must have for anyone who attended any of these shows, such as myself.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
The first of hopefully many followups to the 4 cd set The Park. This 2 cd set is comprised of two of the September shows. The first show (which I attended myself) is in outstanding sound quality. One of the few audience recordings where an equalizer is not necessary to produce great sound. Very clear and crisp separation here with even a flat signal. Another standard for other audience recordings to be measured by. This sound quality here is helped in large by the enthusiastic, but relatively quiet audience (after seeing Prince live several times as most of these fans have, you become less awed at being in the presence of the man and tend to absorb the music in a more subdued manner). It was almost embarassing that there was a capacity limit of 500 people to these shows, yet on the average, only 200 showed up for any given performance. Perhaps this was due to the $20 price tag and the lack of promotion, but nevertheless it obviously made for some ideal recording conditions.

Highlights of the shows depend on your Princely tastes. For myself the highlight of the 9/8 show was the rare live rendition of Shy (remember, this was prior to the release of TGE) and the even rarer live version of the awesome Hide the Bone, which to my knowledge has not been heard since the 6/9/94 Glam Slam Miami show. The tracks with the sparse arrangements come through better in terms of sound quaity including the tremendous instrumental guitar solo prior to Sweet Thing on the 9/8 show. Funky Design pounded the roof off at the show but doesn't come through so well on tape. This is the only real drawback of audience recordings. No ability to mix the sound causes songs like this to sound muddled. The second show is nearly the equal in creativity and spontaneity although much shorter in length. Highlights are the rare tracks like Voodoo Child & Zannalee which both rock and the biggest crowd pleaser from his NPG work, Johnny. Packaging is typically remarkable with more Versace pics centered around volcanic-heaven and hell like graphics.

Recommendation
A must. A very handsome addition to any collection. The sound quality is about as good as it can be & the performance is full of improvisation and creativity.

These are the best damn CDs that I've ever heard. The sound quality is terrific and the songs are first-rate. This CD set is better than New Power Soul or Mayte Princess. Disc 1 features a lot of stuff from the upcoming independent release, Emancipation. The outtake version of Dark is very refreshing.....with a heavenly base melody!! Jevetta Steele's cover of Mayte's Ain't No Place Like U is a 100 times better than Mayte's song! Sarah is very uptempo with lots of attitude.... with some funny lyrics ("I'd never raise my hand 2 U, no telling what my foot would do! Aww baby.....that's just a joke..."). Calhoun Square is a classic example of great funk music. The extended version of Billy Jack Bitch showcases more horns by the NPG Hornz. Starfish and Coffee '95 is JUST a little better than the original version on SOTT. The Mustang Mix '96 track is funky! And no one can resist the Paisley Park rehearsal of Pussy Control. Finally, Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife is the best ballad of Prince's (or O(+>'s) career.....boy, it really beats listening to Adore.

This is a re-issue of the original Past, Present & Future 2-CD set. This re-issue features 5 newly available tracks, 2Morrow, Zannalee (studio outtake), Empty Room '95 (studio outtake), Five Women '95), and Everyday People/I Wanna Take You Higher. kay, okay.....Five Women '95 was released on another CD a couple of months ago! Well, 2Morrow is the shit......a very jazzy, yet funky-ass track with a sample of TMBGITW added here and there!!! This should have been on the Emancipation album....it could have easily replace the not-so-great song Emale. Can't nobody beat the man!!! For your information, this song was played on the Tom Joyner morning radio show (based in Chicago).......isn't that something??!

Zannalee and Empty Room '95 sound the same as the version on the Neon CD, but without the hollow sound over the PA system. Much better versions!! Everyday People.... is okay, but it doesn't do much for me! By the way, O(+> just plays lead guitar on this......no vocals.

One thing: Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife was removed from the CD set......of course, it's available on Emancipation. Also, 51 Hours (extended remix), Ain't No Place Like U (by Jevetta Steele)and Gold (VH-1 Love 4 1 Another Remix), The Beautiful Ones (Live), and Blues in C were all deleted from the set. Personally, I would prefer to keep 51 Hours and Ain't No Place Like U and scrap from the CD set!!! One more thing, Interactive is the full version, not the edited CD-ROM version!!! That's great!!

Recommendation
If you have the original Past, Present & Future CD, replace it with this CD set! You won't regret it!

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
The is not a new release but it has finally passed in front of me and is well worthy of a review. Packaging is very, very nice with attractive graphics and great Act II photos. The complete track listing (36 in all) are listed handsomely on the back sleeve. This release is pictured in volume II of the recent bootleg issue of Uptown magazine.

The Act II tour, like all of his tours between 1989 and 1994 is far from ground-breaking. This is what Steve Walsh is referring to in the liner notes of The Gold Experience about the days when Prince was just coasting onwards for nostalgia purposes. Incredible shows by any an ordinary artist's standards, purely coasting by Princely standards. As Uptown magazine notes in their review of the Act II tour this was one of the premiere shows of the tour if not the best. Nothing out of the ordinary here for the first three-fourths of the show except for the only rendition of Bambi from the entire tour. Prince's good mood is easily apparent as is the sheer energy from the show. A brief highlight is during the opening of Purple Rain when our hero thanks the 400 fans who sent him single roses prior to the show. His chatter with the crowd is a big plus here. The tracks he performs during the show our redundant to many of us, thus making his chatter with the crowd the true treasure of this recording. Disc 2 is when the show really comes to life with Girls & Boys, 7, Come, Peach, Endorphinmachine and a great singalong version of Johnny. This final sequence of songs has to rank as one of his best encores in recent memory.

The bonus tracks from the 7/11/92 Les Bains Douches club in Paris are a nice inclusion as is the great rendition of Gett Off off the 1991 MTV Video Awards (a performance better to be seen than just heard!!). A highlight of the 7/11/92 gig is during Sex Machine when Prince politely asks the crowd to back up a step so that the pretty little girl down here in front can breath.

Recommendation
Tough call. Packaging is a plus. If you already own an Act II show on disc that has VG+ sound then this is not a necessity. If you however have nothing from this tour this is an optimal choice until a soundboard recording appears somewhere down the line (as I cross my fingers). Very nice release.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
If there was ever a Prince song that we could picture Bono singing it would be The Cross. How lucky we are that this disc captures that moment after so much has been written about it. I recall one of the recent European magazines that included a review of this gig. The reviewer was simply amazed at how different the two artists looked on stage during the song. Bono was fully into the song, veins sticking out of his neck, squeezing the microphone tight enough to squeeze water out of it, etc..and here was Prince, a vision of cool, expressionless while kicking ass on the guitar. A priceless video moment that would be. Anyway, a good show by our standards, but not a great show on Prince's standards in my opinion. This one doesn't quite live up to the excitement of the Paradiso' gigs. Those who attended this Dublin gig may disagree, but these tracks don't seem to run together as well as usual. Highlights are Funky Design, Johnny as well as the opening rendition of The Cross. Tracks like Feel Good, Loose come off sounding stale and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World is a song that should've been left in the studio where it sounded perfect. I've never heard a great live version of it. Sound quality is great as always, not as good as some others but definitely still in the EX- range for audience jobs. Packaging is (can I be redundant?) typically fantastic. Like many of the other CD's I've reviewed recently this comes in a clear jewel box casing with a wonderfully designed fold out booklet. Great inner photo is scarily reminiscent of the lead character Tony in the movie Scarface...great shot.

Recommendation
The Bono/Prince collaboration makes this one worth searching out. Nearly all these tracks here are available on other discs that contain better shows but you still can't go wrong with this disc when you look at the combination of graphics and sound quality.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
The definitive release of this show is finally here on CD. So many of the previous bootlegs have suffered from less than perfect quality and incomplete recordings that it's a wonder that its taken this long for someone to make a truly perfect document of this very easily accessible recording. The closest competitor is the Flesh For Fantasy set released on Great Dane quite a few years back. Other releases such as Sex Toy just haven't provided the combination of packaging and sound that this Moonraker release does.

Unfortunately, this is one of the more boring shows on the Purple Rain tour. The spring leg of the tour featured incredible shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. What's missing here are the improvisational jams and new songs he premiered during the months of February and March of 1985. Outside of Possessed (a true highlight of this show) this is little more than a typical run through of the Purple Rain album material with the usual splattering of 1999 hits. Disappointing, but back when this video was released we could care less.

The packaging here is incredible with a gorgeous booklet featuring dozens of pictures from the show in sequence. Along with Wonderboy this may be the most attractive packaging thus far of the Moonraker releases.

Musical highlights include the aforementioned Possessed, a jazzy redo of Let's Pretend We're Married and one of the more appealing versions of Purple Rain. His two guitar solos before the first verse of the title track are wonderful, one very bluesy and Santana like while the other solo screams of Hendrix. The performances of Purple Rain on subsequent tours never seemed to capture the emotion that they did during these nearly 20 minute versions.

Recommendation
Owning Flesh For Fantasy may be the only reason to not obtain this. The packaging here suggests you should sell all previous copies of this show on CD and find this one.

Wonderful looking document on his recent Gold run through Wembley Arena. Packaging could not look better. Brilliant looking 2 disc set with great looking pics and a cardboard black and white foldout included which has complete track listing & song credits that are all dispersed around an attractive collage of newspaper clippings from the Wembley shows. Very nice indeed. Sound quality is above acceptable, but far from fantastic. There are other audience recorded bootlegs with superior quality to this, but for the Gold tour this may be the best to appear so far. The opening Endorphinemachine suffers from terrible sound quality but then slowly improves. Sound quality is not disappointing but nothing to jump up and down about. The tracks from March 3rd on disc 2 appear to sound clearer, in particular I Love U In Me. His speech midway through disc 2 is quite interesting. He reaffirms the fact that the NPG bankroll is "all good" and that since the last time he's been to Wembley (Act II tour) that he's recorded 7 albums. Hmmm... The performance is well paced for a determined fan but I can see where an unexpecting concert goer would get frustrated by the lack of hits and the inconsistent pace of the songs. I personally love the track listing. The creators here of this disc set go out of their way to pull in nearly every different track he played during his Wembley stay. The performance is inspired, which can't really be said for his recent European stops since the Lovesexy tour. He seems to have a purpose for being there this time, much like he did in 1988. Musically, I think this tour blows away the Lovesexy tour. Highlights here center primarily around songs he didn't play to death on his Love Experience summer tour last summer. Tracks like Letitgo, I Love U In Me, Superhero, etc. prove more excitabled here than the standard versions of Now, Days Of Wild, Endorphinemachine, The Ride, etc. (all of these cuts appear in superior quality for sound and performance on a great number of other discs). On a somber note for myself and many others here in the states it sounds to my ears like this tour would be a financial and commercial disaster if attempted on an arena level. Stick to the theaters.

Recommendation
If you want to have one document of the European Gold tour this would be an exceptional choice since the sound quality is very good, the performance is inspiring, the packaging is fabulous and nearly every track he played on the tour is present. I have a struggle getting excited over audience recorded arena gigs when so many fabulous aftershows are available but this barely reaches over that edge which is great considering the fact that I think only about 1 out of every 5 audience recorded concerts on disc is worth owning.

The titles and time are from the back. It's not exactly correct, but it's close. Nr.5 is of course Annie Christian and Nr.8 Jack U Off. When You Were Mine is still playing in the beginning of Nr. 4.

This was my first bootleg and I think it's a great one too. Prince havin' some fun with the female audience in some songs. He leaves after Let's Work and comes back saying: You know you can't leave until I Jack U Off, and then the song starts. The longer songs are especially great.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
This CD falls into the category of being worthless to one collector and a prize to another. It appears to be a domestic release as it appeals more to US fans than those from other countries. The biggest hint towards this notion is the fact that this is the first CD I've noticed that contains the officially released version of The Undertaker. This was of course not released here in the states and unless you own the Japanese laserdisc or have access to a PAL converter, this is the only way to own the audio of what was released. Sound quality on The Undertaker is disappointing though. Since its source is an officially released video the sound should be crisper. It's excellent sound but it should be perfect. The remaining tracks are a collection of his TV appances from 1995. These are well represented with very good sound quality. They have however appear on other previous releases in similar quality. Billy Jack Bitch is not from Miami '94 as the sleeve indicates, it is instead a rehearsal version without TAFKAP even present. The Dolphin video version is the same as the officially released version. Packaging has four attractive 1994 photos that at least match up with the time frame of this disc.

Recommendation
I only recommend this to those who don't own The Undertaker in one form or another & desparately need it. The TV appearances are a nice addition but hardly enough to salvage this otherwise disappointing release.

Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
The final show of the Love Experience tour. I think this is the first time I've ever reviewed a CD that contained a show I actually attended. It's much more enjoyable to review a show from the first row than from my office chair next to my CD player. At the time of the performance it was a very eventful show for many reasons. The final show of the tour, the 2nd night in a row in which the phenomenal studio version of Pussy Control was previewed and the first ever Minneapolis performance of Gold. With all the comparisons of the anthemic Gold track to Purple Rain it felt special to see him perform this gem in front of his home crowd and overwhelming to see it from the front row. (On a personal highlight note here: for the first 3 minutes of the performance of Gold a Minneapolis free lance photographer was allowed to snap photos of the man right next to me in the front row. He was removed after 3 minutes. I had the foresight to acquire his business card and after months of begging and dealing I was fortunate enough to be the only person to obtain a set of the 24 incredible photos that he shot from the master negatives. The negatives are now locked in his safety deposit box. A true souvineer.) This CD set makes a nice addition to my collection for personal reasons but for someone not at the show, this disc set will be more difficult to enjoy. Sound quality is average. Included though is a rare live version of Love Sign with Nona Gaye and a thrilling jam on The Glam Slam Boogie. A rare version of Papa is here too. Also the studio version here of Pussy Control is slightly different than the officially released one. TAFKAP must have surely known he had a crowd pleaser here with Pussy Control because he played the studio track actually twice this night. Once during and once immediately after the show. I can't recall him doing that in the past for any unreleased track. Nothing much else sticks out here that isn't already available elsewhere. One would be better to search for superior disc sets that prevailed from this tour like Glam Slam West, My First Birthday, etc....this set belongs mostly to the people who were at the show. Packaging is subpar to what we've been used to lately. Very average and mundane with two pics of the man and no graphics.

Recommendation
Not a necessity by any means unless you're desperate to hear the live versions of Love Sign and Papa for the first time. For the hardcore Love Experience tour collectors only. Look for the plethora of other disc sets that provide higher quality copies of these tracks.
