Madhouse 24 (1CD)
Tracks from unrelesed 3rd Madhouse Album
- Label
- MG857A
- Review
- DISC LENGTH : 75:21
- OVERALL SOUND QUALITY : Studio soundboard, EX- on the Madhouse
songs, VG on the Prince tracks.
- SOURCE: The unreleased 3rd Madhouse album, miscellaneous Prince
outtakes.
- COMMENTS : Excellent stereo quality taped recordings of the
Madhouse 24 album have been in circulation for quite some time now. The
CD has great sound but not as good as the tape I and most collectors
have. Pretty good highs and lows for the sound but too much hiss is
going along for the ride. For those who don't know, the Madhouse track
entitled '17' on the 1-800-NEW FUNK album is not the same as '17' on
this CD. Sound quality on the remixes of '6', '10' & '13' is
excellent as it should, considering it comes from official vinyl
sources. The quality on the Prince tracks added onto the end of the CD
are forgettable. I wish they would've left them off. It only hinders the
original concept of putting all of the missing Madhouse tracks onto
disc. Sound quality on these extra cuts is inferior to every other CD
& tape source that I've listened to. Packaging is great. Put this
next to the other official Madhouse CD's and this fits right in very
nicely. Very nicely produced inner sleeve and great looking disc.
- RECOMMENDATION : This is for completists. It looks great on a CD
cabinet because of its high quality packaging. However if you're just
interested in having the music, search out someone who has a high
quality tape of these recordings. It would be more worth the time and
the money in doing so.
- I bought a boot there the other day by the symbol man entitled
"Madhouse". The track listing is rather vague and maybe, just maybe not
totally acurate. The songs are jazzy and very very funky. If you
haven't then look it up it's top quality and very special.....
- Track 1-5: This would be all of the Madhouse 24 project that was
shelved. These tracks have been circulating for quite a while, but have
only recently come out on boot CD.

* = Previously Released Mayte material before her involvement

- Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
- A high quality sounding collection of studio outtakes and alternate
versions of Mayte's studio work with Prince for her
Child of the Sun album. Nothing much here to get excited about
except for the constant splattering of Prince background vocals and
production throughout the tracks. Very few if any of these tracks are
outstanding but as always the biggest entertainment is in listening to
the Princely influence and guidance throughout. One minor highlight is
the version of If I Could Get your Attention which still
features one of his cutest melodies. Attention has already been
recorded by Taja Seville and Mayte's version adds nothing to Taja's
original but it may be the best song on this set along with
If I Love U 2nite and However Much U Want. Mayte has
some talent but it really doesn't come through on her recordings. I'm
also sure that this isn't the last of her studio work since she is now a
member of the purple party till death do them part. The tracks at the end
of the disc are previously released including Broken Wings and
are nice for Mayte completists but are some of the worst songs ever
recorded.
Packaging is nice and low key with an attractive foldout booklet, but
nothing that truly enhances the real value of the collection.
- Recommendation
- For big Mayte fans & those who are desperate to hear some more
background production work by our hero that doesn't already appear on
the album. The quality of the CD is great, the quality of the songs
themselves leave a little to be desired at times.

- Review
- 'May U live to see the down' (typo is on the side of the
CD) (though it is written 'dawn' on the cover artwork). I finally
listened to this boot, it is the 18 January 1991 show in Rio de Janeiro,
more than 75' long. The track listing is close the the one from 'don't
cry for me Argentina', with a few differences like for exemple Horny
Pony added. To my hear it sounded kind of muffled, too much bass, I'd
say worst than the 'don't cry ...' boot. So VG sound. To my knowledge it
is the first time this shows appears on CD. Real collectors will want
to have both boots, more casual fan may want to try to find 'don't
cry...' first. (oh yes, as there were 2 shows in Rio in 1991, I have no
way to know for sure which one it was, it's the booklet that says
18/1/1991.)

- The 2nd best boot I own (Small Club is my best)! All performances
are great. Real funky CD with some great ballads. The
"God"-instrumental-version is incredible, a bit like Santana's "Samba pa
ti". Best I ever heard.

- The paisley park show by Prince, which was broadcasted by
swiss radio DRS 3
- Same as Welcome To The Beautiful Experience (KTS 285).
- Soon to be the one of the most heavily bootlegged Prince shows.
Flawless sound quality, great unreleased material as well as being
Prince's debut show under the 'O+>' moniker. Not quite as compelling a
performance as the 'Small Club' CD above, but equally exciting in
several parts. This combination of sound quality, packaging and what
has become one of the most exciting periods of Prince's career make this
a must have to any collection. Both of these CD's listed have the same
sound quality, the KTS one though has far superior packaging. Don't
settle for just a tape of the show. Enjoy the fidelity of this wonderful
CD.

- COMMENTS : Yes, this is the latest and newest release of the same
show that appears on at least 10 other extremely high quality
bootlegs. My main purpose for reviewing this disc is so to ensure
that no one purchases this assuming from the title that they are
going to get a copy of the man's performances in July at
Minneapolis's Glam Slam. Sorry, but this is the February show at
P. Park. This also obviously appears to be a reissue off
of the Minneapolis bootleg (Kisses No. 40) that came out
in spring of '94 and was the first boot to contain this concert.
The reason we can tell it's a remake is that this disc has
incorrect titles like Peter Technique and Marshall
Law just like the Minneapolis disc does. I compared
this disc to Welcome 2 the Beautiful Experience (KTS)
which is the best quality CD of this show and Minneapolis
1994 compared favorably. Just marginally inferior at worst.
Cover contains a purple sleeve with a 1993 Act II photo on the
cover. Nothing elaborate.
- RECOMMENDATION : If you don't have this show already on disc and
can't seem to find it for some strange reason (Welcome 2 the
Beautiful Experience is very accessible since its on the
highly popular KTS label) this release will be a very suitable
replacement with its outstanding sound quality and performance.
The only reason I personally own it is because I was at the show
and am attempting to collect every CD containing it....

- Review by Dazeofwild@aol.com
- The Controversy show on disc one is not in the quality of the shows
featured on the City Lights
box set but is still very enjoyable quality. Obviously coming from a
video source the sound quality actually seems to improve as the show
moves on. Highlights include a rare version of one of his most
unappealing songs ever, Annie Christian, and his typical
phenomenal guitar work on Head, I Wanna Be Your Lover,
etc. It's remarkable how he established himself as one of the premiere
& most versatile musicians in rock at just the age of 23 when this
tour began. This is another fine document from what will go down as his
most improvisational tour ever. The jams came from all directions and
never seemed to suffer from the self indulgence that his recent tours
have.
Disc two features one of the final 1999 tour shows. Sound quality here
is subpar for soundboard recordings though, and it makes for a rather
difficult listen at times. Especially when so much other music from this
tour is featured in much better quality
(City Lights,
The Homecoming,
1999 Live).
A rare live version of Sexuality and an impromptu piano version
of Free are amongst the highlights of what appeared to be an
exciting show. The biggest disappointment here is that the encore
of 1999 is missing which normally served as a tremendous finale
to a show that never lived up to the quality of the LP it promoted (and
that's been a rare occurrence in Prince's career).
- Recommendation
- It's hard to pass up soundboard recordings no matter what the quality.
This is worth having for the Controversy show on disc one. Not
among the elite for soundboard recordings but still slightly better
than the average bootleg release. An average soundboard recording is
still better than a very good audience recording.

My First Birthday (2CD)
Live at Glam Slam Miami, 7. June 1994
- Label
- 070694-1/2
- Review
-
- DISC LENGTH : disc 1 - 63:04, disc 2 - 51:05
- OVERALL SOUND QUALITY : VG+ soundboard, satellite broadcast.
- SOURCE: 6/7/94 Glam Slam Miami.
- COMMENTS : Undeniably a great show, especially when viewing the
circulating video. This double CD set has a lot of positives. He
celebrates his 'first birthday' in full fashion with a long,
entertaining show featuring the many of his best new, unreleased
tracks. His constant dialogue with the crowd is an added bonus and
is something he did much less of during the two remaining shows in
Miami. Packaging is mediocre, not up to date with many of the
other European releases but is still very acceptable. The show's
highlights include yet another outstanding version of
Days of Wild, and killer versions of Race,
Acknowledge Me & The Jam near the end of
the show. The soundboard quality is another immediate attraction
since all of the other Love Experience tour CD sets have
all been audience recordings (excluding the other 2 Miami shows).
On the down side, this set suffers from some immediate drawbacks.
First off it's missing the opening rendition of Come,
which appears on circulating taped audio copies of the gig.
Secondly, sound quality on the discs don't match the rather
excellent stereo quality on the circulating video. Distortion is
noticeable on most of the songs due to the insufficient quality of
the satellite feed, but this hinders all copies of the show I've
heard, not just these CD's. The tracks as marked on the back sleeve
don't match the actual tracks on the discs, a minor annoyance. And
finally it would've been nice if the 3 studio songs that were
played after the show would've been included, especially
Billy Jack Bitch which appears in near flawless stereo
quality on the video.
- RECOMMENDATION : This show is capable of coming out in much better
stereo quality with superior packaging. I would cross my fingers
and wait to see if that's the case. If not, it's definitely worth
a listen, but for myself, I'd rather sit back and watch the video.

Wembley stadion 31.Jul.93
- Label
- Teddy Bear Records
- Review
- This is the live show from 31.Jul.93 (Wembley stadion).
The quality is the same as on other releases - very low. There are no
bonus tacks. So if you like to have the concert you'd better look for
the EUROPEAN TOUR ACT II CD which contains as bonus tracks all the
new songs from the two Birmingham shows - or for the MY NAME IS...?
CD, which has some Arsenio Hall tracks as bonus.
My Name is God (2CD)
Live at the Patriot Center/Fairfax, 16.Mar.93
- Review
- This one has the same name as the one above but contains
the concert from the Patriot Center on 16.Mar.93. The quality is bad
and the show is very short. Prince left out the whole encore
(Partyman, 1999, Baby I'm A Star, Push). The song listed as "Uh Huh"
is "Johnny".
