Cadets and Staff from 2558
Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps have returned from another successful summer training session
Normally, cadets spend their summers training at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. This past summer, due to government housing for refugees of the Kosovo war, training was relocated to the campus of Mount Allison
University, Sackville, Nova Scotia, Slemon Park , Summerside, PEI and the Adventure Training Site at Port Elgin, New Brunswick.
the three locations hosted approximately 1,300 cadets. Another 140 cadets an staff represented an army cadet leader course at Vernon Cadet Summer Training Centre in British Colombia.
At Camp Argonaut, 24 cadets attended various training courses while six cadets and four officers were employed in staff positions.
Successful Basic Army Cadets include, Katie McCarthy, Peter Collins, James Greene, Maria Greene, Katrina Healey, Jasime McGrath, Gerard Meade and Meghan O'Keefe.
Katie Kelly and Vanessa Woodman completed the Basic Army Cadet Military Band, while William Collins, David Miller, and Julia Whittle completed Basic Pipes and Drums.
New Army Cadet Leaders include Kim C. Lannon, Jamie O'Keefe and Sasha Power. Successful in Completing the Army Cadet Leader Military Band; Pipes and Drums training were James Whittle and Tyler Wilson.
The Following individuals completed the Army Cadet Leader Instructor course - Geoff Hidgon and Kim Walsh (Drill and Ceremonial), Lee Pomroy and Sarah Wilson (Adventure), Denise Woodman (Physical Education and Recreational Training), and Wayne Power (Rifle Coach)
Dale Pomroy completed the Army Cadet Leader course at Vernon, BC.
According to Captain Lorne Collins of 2558 RCACC, the cadets "slept for the first couple of days home" as a result of vigorous training and participation at Camp Argonaut.
Military training included drill, bushcraft, fieldcraft, map and compass, and firearms. Personal development training entailed instructional technique, leadership, citizenship, sensible living and physical fitness.
A section of the Trans Canada Trail was developed by the older cadets. First Aid and Introductory Internet training was provided as well.
In addition to this multitude of hard work, the cadets enjoyed swimming, movies, local parades, tours, concerts and competitions.
Several awards were captured by cadets of 2558. Katie McCarthy received a shadow rank of Sergeant/Section Commander for the second Basic Army Cadet course.
Sarah Wilson received a Sergeant/Section Commander rank for the Adventure Course.
Meghan O'Keefe was a Warrant Officer/Platoon 2ic for the third Basic Army Cadet course.
In addition to receiving the top male athlete award, Lee Pomroy was awarded high honours for the Adventure course, being appointed Major/Company Commander, the highest rank in the company.
To add to her award of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans Medal of Merit as the top candidate on the Physical Education and Recreational Training course, Denise Woodman was appointed Major/Company Commander for the Physical Education and Recreational Training and Rifle Coach Company.
A couple of other cadets from 2558 have received this honour in the past. Greg Hedlund got the honour in 1997 and Rebecca O'Keefe in 1998.
This is quite an accomplishment considering only one medal is awarded each year to the seven Instructor courses at Argonaut. As an added honour Woodman will travel to the Us in October to experience training with the Us Marine Corps.
Captain Collins and the rest of 2558 would like to congratulate former alumnus Kim Lannon on completing the Basic Officer Training Course at Fort St. Jean, Quebec this summer. Lannon will attend university at the Canadian Forces Royal Military College at St. Jean for the next four years to pursue a career in air operations.
