Memorize!

VERY IMPORTANT! Memorizing Scripture is not a competition or an end in itself.
Psalm 119:11 gives us the true purpose – to obey God! Matthew 7:24-27 and
James 1:22-25 tell us to put the Bible into practice.

Read it out loud (Matthew 28:16-20)
Using your ears and your eyes increases your chances to memorize! Read Matthew 28:16-20 out loud.

Divide it up (Matthew 28:16)
Divide up a verse by words and number the words. Make a circle and pass out the words in order. The first person reads the first word, then the next person recites the first word and adds his or her word, and so on. Try it with Matthew 28:16. When you get to the end, keep going around the circle until everyone has recited the whole verse. You will probably need to pass out more than one word to some people.

Pictures (Matthew 28:17)
Associate a verse with a descriptive image. Get out some paper and crayons and draw an image of Matthew 28:17.

Write it (Matthew 28:17 cont.)
Some people find that writing out the verses by hand helps them to learn faster and to remember longer. Write down Matthew 28:17 three times on the backside of your drawing.

Singing (Matthew 28:18)
Put a verse to a familiar tune or make up your own melody.
{To the tune of “Jesus Loves Me”}
Jesus came to them and said,
“All authority in heav’n,
And on earth has been given,
To me. Matthew 28,
verse 18.

Create a code (Matthew 28:19)
Write the first letter of each word out on a card.
Matthew 28:19 (NIV) should look like this:
T G A M D
O A N, B T
I T N O T F
A O T S
A O T H S,

Divide it up – part 2 (Matthew 28:20)
Write out the verse on a white board. Repeat the verse by yourself or as a group several times; then erase a word or phrase. Repeat the verse again, and then erase a word or phrase again until only the handle (Matthew 28:20) is left.

Translate it (John 3:16)
Use an online translator to translate the verse into another language that you are studying.
If you have more time and expertise, try translating the verse into another language.

TIPS:

* Everybody learns differently. Some people need to hear things, others need to see them. Figure out what works best for you. Experiment!

* Stick passages of Scripture in the bathroom on the mirror, in your bedroom on your door, and by your TV or computer.

* Be sure you learn each verse word perfect.

* Don't immediately look when you can't remember! Make your mind do the work of recalling it. Recalling locks the verse in your memory much better than repetition does.

* Recite information; if you can't recite it, you haven't learned it yet.

* A passage of Scripture needs to be reviewed at least a 100 times before you can say you will know it forever.

* Make review time a priority, not just something you "work in." Review as a part of something you do everyday (breakfast, turn on radio in car, devotions, practice instrument, clear the table, bathe) etc.
