                                   Borinquen's History

Way back in the day, Taino Indians inhabited What is now known as Puerto Rico. they
called the island Borinken, which we spell today Borinquen. It means "the great land of
the valiant and noble Lord". The Taino Indians came from South America, and migrated
to the Amazon, Hispaniola, which is now the Dominican Republic, and of course Puerto Rico.
They lived in huts called Bohios and invented the famous Maracas used as a musical instrument.
Sadly because of the spaniards the tainos were whiped out, most by disease brought by the span-
iards. There are no present day Tainos left on the island, making puerto ricans of mixed decent,
Taino with Spanish, African, Arabic, and European. These mixes make Puerto Ricans have
have the rich culture they do, and that is why you will see Boricuas with light eyes, dark skin
or light skin and curly hair, or like me, light skin, light eyes, straight hair...just blame it on
       my ancestors =)

Christopher Colombus landed on Puerto rico November 19, 1493 he called it San Juan Bautista,
the tainos greeted him with welcome, but He soon discovered all the gold the Tainos had, from
then on the island became a carribean port which they called "Puerto Rico", thus giving it the name
it  has today. In 1513 African slaves were brought to the island, so were some arab slaves, and that
is how we have so many mixes.

And after that, most of the gold in Puerto Rico was depleted, and then everybody wanted Puerto
Rico, then came all those fights, battles, which I know are of no interest to you, so I'll jump about
400 years, hehehe, and start on how Puerto Ricans became a U.S. commonwealth, and how the
    Boricuas became United States Citizens.

On July 25, 1952 my pretty little island became a U.S. territory and in this year our flag was officially
    adopted......

"  "Que Bonita bandera, la bandera puertorriqueña..."

                                                       Puerto Rican anthem

                                                         "La Borinqueña"

                                                       La tierra de Borinquén
donde he nacido yo,
es un jardín florido
de mágico fulgor.
Un cielo siempre nítido
le sirve de dosel
y dan arrullos plácidos
las olas a sus pies.

Cuando a sus playas llegó Colón;
Exclamó lleno de admiración;
"Oh!, oh!, oh!, esta es la linda
tierra que busco yo".

Es Borinquén la hija,
la hija del mar y el sol,
del mar y el sol,
del mar y el sol,
del mar y el sol,
del mar y el sol.

The background music you hear is the Puerto Rican anthem
now what other country has an anthem that is danceable =o)

                                          Sniff'...sorry got all teary eyed....hehehe
Well I think that's about it, theres a whole lot more but I don't feel like writing...hehehhe...
