On the planet of Gaea(to which the Earth is their moon)live a race of catpeople. One of these is Merle. This
teenager has been in the company of the young prince
Van of the kindom of Fanelia. She had been his
attendant and friend since childhood. Merle has a
crush on Van and displays her affection for him by
licking him in public. But with the arrival of the
Earthling Hitomi, her attitude has increased with
jealousy. She, Van, and Hitomi barely escaped the
destruction of Fanel from the Zaibach Empire and
have linked up with a band of freedom fighters to
stop their advance of Gaia. Merle stands by Van through
thick and thin, but Van thinks of her more like a
baby sister than a love interest. In a parallel
universe, Merle is older and a friend of Van, helps
him fend off the Dragonslayers who are searcing for
the ancient armor of Escaflowne. After helping Van,
she returns to her tribe and her sisters.
