THE ANGUISH BIFORE WAKING

Four years before anyone heard of the Kosova Liberation Army,a young film director predicted there would one day be "freedom fighters",brave men in Kosova who would fight against the harch regime of Serbia.
In his film
ANKTHI-(ANGUISH),Nexhmedin SYLA
shows young Albanians -as ninjas-training in Western Europe and planing to fight for the liberation of Kosova.
However,Syla's Western-oriented ninjas are torn between hating violence and being forced to take up arms "to behead the bad,the evil"-to end the brutal repression sponsored by Slobodan Milosevic.
But Syla's "brave men" in the 70-minute video,whose main topic is the exodus of Albanians,also grieve for their homeland because Kosova's human fabric is slowly disintegrating as people leave.
The idea for the film came to the young artist-whose talents include singing,radio broadcasting,acting and directing-in 1992 as he boarded a bus to Switzerland from his hometown,Prishtinė.
A new film foreshadows the KLA

"In noticed how the windows inside the bus were wet with tears as relatives said goodbye to each other ", said Syla.His dedication to making the film grew after learning how top Albanian intellectuals,including writer Ismail Kadare,were denouncing the transport companies and smugglers who made it passible for people to leave.Ironically,Kadare himself now lives in Paris.
Once in Switzerland,where he spent five years,Syla,who himself stars in the film,began searching for amateur actors.The film ,which has very litlle dialogue,took him almost three years and his life savings to produce. Although the scenery and camera works are impressive ,the prolonged action scenes,abrupt cuts and sparse dialogue cause Syla at times to stumble in getting his message across for the ordinary viewer.But the young director should be awarded for persistence and patience.
"Film critics have told me the film is really geared to towards intellectuals",says Syla who sees the ecxodus as one of the main tragedies of the Albanian nation.The symbolism kicks in right at the star of the film with a crying baby trapped in a glass bowl,as the cover of the REXHEP QOSJA book "FORBIDDEN PEOPLE"appears in the background.Then the exodus begins,with hordes of young Albanians crossing the snowy,rugged mountains that separate them from the "good life in Europe.
Smugglers are paid top money to oversee the escape.It is estimated that some 500.000 Albanians have left Kosova in they years(1989 to 1995)and that just as many have left Albania in the same period - a total of 1 million ,and some put the figure even higher. In trying to escape they often pay with their lives,and Syla has captured this too.He shows how a young mother slips down a ravine and is knocked out as she tries to escape with her baby.By the time she wakes up,her baby is frozen to death and she runs down the hill in horror with her child's frozen body in her arms calling,"Wake up,my son,wake up,Kosova!"Mother and child simbolize Kosova and its people who have been waiting in vain for their freedom to come through their peaceful policies masterminded by Ibrahim Rugova.
"Waiting in political terms means defeat,loss,just as the mother loses the child while waiting to regain her consciousness'"says Syla.More and more Albanians are growing impatient with Rugova's peaceful-resistance tactcs.Groups like the KLA,which have claimed responsibility for dozens of deaths of both Serb and Albanian"collaborators," are now being viewed with sympathy by many Albanians.
"Albanians were in an anguish,which I call the last period before a person wakes up",Syla said.
However,the producer makes a distinction between Albanian immigrants migrating to Europe and those who cross the continent to the U.S.and other places around the world.
"Those who remain in Europe are not a complete loss because they are,at least,on their own continent,which ironically has never treated them fairly," says Syla. Nevertheless,Europe for Albanians,according to Syla is a cave,which has always kept Albanians in the dark.
"The ones (Albanians immigrants)here in the U.S.are like cut flowers that will never bloom again". Syla intends to show this in
ANGUISH II,
if he manages to find sponsors for the film in the U.S.The film ends on the same note on which it begins-the death of a man and the crying baby-symbolizing the historical cycle of Albanians in Europe:Although the old continent brings them death,they continue to survive.
