Chapter 17

"You're leaving?" JC asked, befuddled. "Yeah," she choked. "Why?" he asked, confused. "I.. I have to." she shook her head, stuffing a bunch of her Beanie Babies in a suit case. A blue one fell to the floor. JC instinctively reached down for it. He handed it to her. She sniffed. "Thanks, JC." She finally looked up and JC noticed the tear stains on her face and her puffy eyes. "Are you ok?" he asked. "Yeah.. or at least I will be." she said, smiling up at him slightly. "Alright. But do you have to leave?" "Yeah." she said, looking down again. JC sighed. "JC!" Justin and Lou's voices yelled. "Coming." he said, looking over at Mandi. "I'll call you. Don't think you can get away from me this easy." She smiled. "Wouldn't dream of it."

Mandi sniffed, leaning back in her chair on the airplane, taking her to Orlando. She remembered how JC had looked when she'd left. Half hurt the she was leaving, half hurting because she was leaving. She was almost asleep when her cell phone rang. "Hello?" she asked cautiously. "Ohmigosh! Is this JC Chasez's cell phone?" a girls voice said. "Do I sound like a JC Chasez?" she snapped. "No.." the girl admitted. Mandi grinned. "Isn't he Backstreet Boy or something?" "NO!" the girl said, sounding horrified. "*N SYNC!" "*N STINC.. SYNC?" she giggled. "Yeah." the girl snapped. "What's the matter with you? Are you crazy? Don't you know who JC is? He's like, the FINEST *N SYNC member there is!" Mandi sighed. "I know." "What's your name, anyhow?" the girl said. "I'm Mel." "Mandi." she said without thinking. The girl shrieked, "MANDI?? MANDI WRIGHT? The dancer?" Mandi giggled. "Not anymore. I quit and you don't have this number, ok?" "OK!" Mel said. 'What a ditz.' "Great! Have a nice day! Love ya, mean it chow!" she hung up. The phone rang again. "Hello?" "Why'd you hang up?" Mel asked. "I have to go! Love ya, mean it chow!" she hung up again. The phone rang yet again. "HELLO?" she said through clenched teeth. "I want to talk." Mel squealed. "Can you get me into an *N..." Mandi hung up the phone, and it rang again. "What?" she asked. "Hey Sweetie, sup?" JC chuckled. "Oh, I'm just getting harassed over the phone by your biggest fan." she said sarcastically. He laughed. "Oh. Well, are you almost there?" "Yep. In fact, I have to go. We're landing." "OK," he said. "Talk to you later. I'm gonna call you everyday, ya know." "You'd better." she smiled. "Talk to you later, Cutie." "OK, bye." "Bye." she said, hanging up again.

"no, no, no, no, NO!" Lou cried in frustration. He looked at Tina and sighed. "Tina, I know you have a bass voice, and that you hate to be heard over the girls when you sing, but, sweetheart, you are SUPPOSED to be heard here! It's only one little piece!" "OK.." she said. "Sing it girlfriend!" Mandi exclaimed. Stephanie rolled her eyes. "I KNOW you didn't just roll your eyes at me!" Mandi threatened, looking at her over the mic. Stephanie laughed. "OK, girls! That's enough!" Carmin said. "Take it from verse two, second line." Mandi, Stephanie and Tina began to sing. "Yeah, baby.. You know.. You know it's true.." Tina sang. Lou clapped his hands in joy. Mandi and Stephanie laughed. "OK, girls! That's a wrap! Go home and get some sleep. I'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning!" Lou said, walking out the door with Carmin. Stephanie and Tina pulled their headphones off. "Aren't you coming?" Tina asked. "No, I'm gonna stay here and work on some vocals." Mandi said. "OK, see ya tomorrow!" Stephanie said. "OK, turn the recorder on on your way out." "OK!" Mandi smiled as the song came on. It was a new song that both KiLo and *N SYNC were putting on their upcoming albums, and Lou had given her a copy of the *N SYNC version. She began the first verse with JC's recorded voice. "Forbidden fantasy/You'll never know/What you mean to me/What I see/You don't/Understand.." She sighed in frustration and pulled off the headphones. She turned around and walked out of the room. She was surprised to find the hall dark. As she walked down the hall of Trans Con, she looked at the pictures of artists, some of which weren't with Trans Con anymore. 'Backstreet Boys, C-Note..' she counted them off. Then she came to the big one at the end of the hall where the main lobby was. "*N SYNC.." she breathed. She looked at each one's face. Her eyes came to the one she'd been dying to see for the last three years. "JC.." she thought. She smiled, remembering how fun the "Bring on the Millennium" tour had been. Then she scowled and walked out the door. She has to catch her shift as Sam Goody.
