She heard him softly whisper, "You don't have to be brave for me."
He opened his eyes and looked at Kira. The sunlight softly touched her blond hair making it an optical allusion of gold and he watched as the soft light danced in her blue-green eyes, the color of the ocean. That was the way he would always remember her. Only happier.
"What are you thinking?" she asked.
He smiled softly trying to conceal the evident pain he was in. Nothing had helped him. None of the chemo and treatments had worked for him. The chemo had left him in endless pain and much weaker making him more vulnerable to death.
"How beautiful you look," he finally answered her.
She laughed. "You always say that I am beautiful no matter what..." she said but her smile turned into bitter tears of regrets and dashed hopes. "No one will be with me and telling me that everyday like you do."
Ethan did know that in his heart that there was someone. "I'm so sorry Kira. I love you with all my heart. Truly. I am. I wish fate hadn't done this. Do you know how many times I curse God?" "No regrets...I love you with all of my heart."
"You complete my existence. You are the other half of my soul."
"You were always the poet," she said.
"No I just copied that off somewhere else. I'm sure I have heard it somewhere else and the fact that I don't know right now is bugging the crap out of me." She could only smile. "Kira will you hold me?" he asked after sometime. She slipped into the hospital next to her frail husband. Frail was something she never thought she would think her husband was. But that was in fact the case. He was frail like a dried rose and he was dying just like one too. She wrapped her arms around him but she felt as though her heart was shattering into a million pieces. There was no way she could let him go. But she had to.
"Kira one more thing?"
"Alright, what is it?" she asked softly barley a whisper.
"Will you kiss me?"
She looked into the strong gray eyes that was full of soul. This was the man she had learned to fall in love with. The man that was her soul mate. She gave him a slightly passionate kiss. When the kiss they shared ended he looked at her mockingly. "Is that anyway to kiss your husband?"
Kira forgot the fact he was dying. For a second she remembered him as the man that she met and had gotten married to. She forgot the death that was hanging over his head and kissed him with all the passion that consumed her heart. It was a kiss driven by love. But she began to feel him slip away. "Ethan! Ethan? Oh God no! God, you just can't be cruel enough to do this! Oh Ethan please don't leave me! I love you!" she shouted but she saw his soul slip away. And as quickly as dawn disperses, her husband was gone just as quickly. She burst into tears. Her cries were hysterical. She walked out of the hospital room and walked the hallways in search of her daughter. Her daughter ran into her mother's arms and hugged her which surprised Kira.
"Mommy its okay," her daughter said.
Kira nodded and looked into Tiffany's brown eyes. They were the eyes of Chris.
