~*Chapter Three*~
" … you have to know that I still like you … even love you a little… (a cheeky smile thrown in here) … but you have to understand that this is hard for me at the moment. I don’t know how I feel yet… I’m not sure when I’ll be ok… but right now? I just don’t think that I can handle seeing you. I’m so sorry, cutie, but I can’t do it." Kayti finished hurridly, while Nick sat on the sofa, shell-shocked.
"So I don’t have a say in this?" he asked, his voice shaking.
"I’m so sorry…" was all Kayti could say. She got up and headed for the front door. As she turned back, she added, "I’ll call you…"
"Whatever…" Nick said quietly as the door closed behind her.
"I’ve gotta do something about this…" Nick told Brian quietly as he got up to leave.
"You need anything, man, I’m here," he told Nick.
"I know…" Nick trailed off, walking to the door, a plan hatching in his mind.
In Angel’s Room
"God, Nick, are you sure you want to do this?" Angel laughed as she lathered his hair.
"You betcha… I’d do anything for her," Nick said, grimacing at the way his sister pulled his hair.
"Yeah I know… but green? Surely you could have picked another colour!" she laughed.
"What… blue? Red? Purple? At least she likes green… so do I! Anyways, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. Just as long as I get to see her again. I really miss her Angel…" Nick trailed off, embarrassed at his outburst.
"I know… hey, it’s finished. Just go rinse your hair, and then dry it. You can see her as soon as you do that!" Angel said, playfully pulling his hair as he jumped up out of the chair.
"You’re the best!" he cried as he raced to the bathroom.
"Yup, yup, yup!"
At Kayti’s Place
Kayti startled as a violent knock at the door shook her out of a fitful sleep. She brushed a hand through her tusled hair hurridly and got up to answer the door.
"Who… who is it?" she asked shakily before opening the door.
"It’s a surprise!" a familiar voice answered.
Kayti couldn’t help it. A smile crept over her face as she opened the door. Then her jaw dropped in shock. Nick stood before her, with a startling new look. Green hair.
"Well, it’s … different!" was all Kayti could say, looking at him dumfounded.
"You not like?" he asked, worried as he ran a hand through his now bright-green hair.
"I didn’t say that…" she laughed as she leant over to kiss him. Her heart nearly burst with happiness at the thought of spending time with Nick again.
He broke from their kiss, breathless as a smile crept over his face for the first time in a long time.
Later
"I don’t know what came over me… it was unfair to blame you like that, but I didn’t know what else to do. You forgive me?" Kayti asked, a pleading tone to her voice.
"I already have," was all Nick would say. He paused.
"What? What’s wrong?" Kayti wondered, concerned.
"The tape… you never said anything about the tape…" he trailed off, looking at her closely for some sign.
"The tape… you know, that was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me…" she answered quietly, a soft smile on her face.
A grin crept over Nick’s face, and he told her, "Well, it’s true. I love you, Miss Australia."
"I love you right back, Mr. America."
The Next Day
Nick had stayed at Kayti’s place that night (no, nothing happened), and they were planning on going out today… shopping or something. But Nick had a secret agenda…
"My God, I cannot believe I blew $300 in less than 2 hours. That has got to be some kind of record, even for me!" Kayti cried as she threw herself on a seat, exhausted. Nick sat down opposite her, and the waiter of the coffee shop came and took their order. Nick waited until he left before talking again.
"Kayti?" he started hesitantly.
"Yup?" she asked, not really paying attention as she rooted through her goodies just freshly bought.
"Kayti! You kinda need to pay attention to this!" he said forcefully.
"Sorry! I was pre-occupied. You know me - I get so distracted when I’ve been shopping. Anyways, you have my undivided attention now… what is it?" she said, not unkindly.
"I got you something," he told her shyly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small package.
"YAY! I love presents!" she squealed as he reached over and handed the package to her.
She opened it quickly, and as the box popped open, she stared in amazement at the beautiful ring that it contained. The emeralds sparked in the sun, matching Nick’s hair colour to the exact shade. He pulled the ring out of the box, and slipped it onto her finger. (No, not the wedding finger!)
She was speechless, her emotions overwhelming her. She wanted to laugh, cry, scream, jump up and down, but she didn’t do any one of those. Instead, she just sat there, unable to move. He realised how she was feeling, and made his way around the table to sit next to her. She turned her head to face his, and their lips met in a soft, sweet, ‘waves crashing over the sands’, ‘movie perfect’ kiss. The kiss became more passionate, and Kayti finally broke away, breathless.
All she could do was stare at the beautiful friendship ring that he had given her.
