~*Chapter Two*~
"Purse, keys NOW!" was all he said. She quietly handed them over, her hands trembling.
"Ok then, now that you’ve been so nice about it, I’m gonna get something else off you. Can you guess what it is, my little pretty?" he spoke softly, menacingly as he reached over and touched her upper thigh.
She slapped his hands away and ran from the swing set. He followed her and twisted her around to face him. As she began to scream, he clamped a hand over her mouth and slapped the side of her face.
"You think someone will save you? No one’s gonna save you," he leered, breathing his foul breath over her face.
Kayti raised her knee, and kicked her attacker. As he fell away in pain, she turned and sprinted toward her car. She climbed in, and locked the doors. She looked around frantically for her keys, and suddenly heard a tapping on her window. The blonde guy stood outside her window, knocking on the glass with her keys. Kayti reached down and pulled out the engine wires, starting the car. The guy bashed on the window, furious. She drove off, shaking so badly, but not wanting to stop for fear that her attacker was following.
She managed to make it to Nick’s house, and stopped the car outside his home. She climbed out, her legs like jelly, and knocked on his front door.
Nick opened the door, a smile on his face.
"Hey you, I’ve been wait… oh my god, what happened?"
She abruptly turned to walk back to her car. Nick’s blond hair reminded her of her attacker and she couldn’t face that at the moment. Nick reached out and grabbed her hand, shouting "Kayti, what’s wrong?"
She jerked her hand away and climbed into the car. She looked out at Nick, standing there with tears in his eyes.
"It’s not you but I have to go. I-I-I can’t do this right now."
She drove off, leaving Nick standing outside quietly, wondering what he’d done. Then he remembered.
‘The tape!’ he thought, and smacked himself on the side of the head. ‘Why did I do it?’
At Natalie’s Apartment
"Nat…Natalie!? Where are you?" Kayti cried as she knocked loudly on Natalie’s front door. Brian came to the door and opened it.
"My God, Kayti! What’s wrong? " he asked as Kayti fell on him. His arms wrapped around her as she began to cry. Natalie came to the door to see what the fuss was about. She saw Kayti crying, and pulled her away from Brian.
"Sweetie, what’s wrong?" Natalie asked softly as Kayti calmed down. Natalie led her over to the sofa and sat her down. Brian sat down on the other side and put his arms comfortingly around Kayti.
"I was at the park… some guy took my purse and keys… it was horrible…" Kayti finally managed to get out, her voice quivering.
"Did he hurt you?" Brian demanded, his voice angry.
"No, I got away in time. He tried to … well, you know. I guess those defense classes we took saved me Nat!" Kayti looked up, half smiling at Natalie.
She smiled back and wrapped her arms around Kayti.
"You don’t wanna go to the police?" she asked, as Kayti shook her head violently.
"It’s ok. I’ll get my stuff back, there wasn’t much cash in my purse or anything. I’ll just have to get new car keys and house keys," Kayti said quietly.
"Nope, you’ll have to change your locks and stuff," Brian told her, coming back from the kitchen with some aspirin and water for Kayti.
"Just one question, Kayti. Why didn’t you go to Nick’s place?" Natalie queried.
"Well… ummm… it’s kinda stupid…" Kayti started, breaking off in mid-sentence as the phone rung.
"Hi, this is Natalie… oh Nick, she’s here… some guy attacked her at the park… no, she’s ok, just a bit upset…no I don’t know why she took off on you, I’m just about to find out. Come over, kay!" Natalie spoke quietly, as Kayti continued to talk to Brian.
"I know that it’s stupid, but the guy who mugged me had blonde hair like Nick’s, and I couldn’t face him. He just reminded me too much of that guy…" Kayti started sobbing again, as Brian held her hand.
"It’s not stupid… it’s fine. But I think you should tell Nick," he told her as she looked up at him in horror.
"I don’t know if I can see him again… at least not yet." Kayti cried, burying her head in the sofa cushions.
"Well, he’s on his way over, Kayti," Natalie told her as she walked back into the room from the phone.
"Nat! What did you do that for? I don’t want to see him yet!" Kayti said forcefully.
"Well, at least tell him why you don’t want to see him! The poor guy was going out of his brain! He’d called everyone else looking for you," Natalie informed Brian and Kayti.
"I ‘spose…" Kayti trailed off, looking down at her hands that were shaking. "You guys will be here with me, won’t you?"
"You betcha!" Brian reassured her.
