~*Chapter One*~
"Man, I wonder how Salym is," Nick said quietly to Kayti.
"Same. I mean it is a big thing, meeting your parents for the first time. I don’t know how I’d feel…," Kayti answered, whispering into his ear.
"Hey, that tickles!" he exclaimed, tickling her ribs in the pitiful payback that it was.
"You stop that Nicky! I’ll have to resort to calling you that if you keep jabbing me in the ribs!" Kayti laughed.
"Wow I love your accent. You just sound so Australian!" Nick told her, resting his arms on her shoulders and nestling his chin into her neck.
"Is that a bad thing?" she asked, turning around.
"No way, cutie! I told you, I love it!" he answered, looking deep into her blue eyes.
"That’s good then, because I wasn’t going to change it for ya… even if you do look really cute when you make that face…" she giggled, looking right back at him.
Simultaneously they burst into laughter, and arms around each other, walked to Salym’s door. Nick reached out and knocked loudly on it, and together they waited for someone to open the door.
Brian eventually opened the door and let them in. Music blared from Salym’s CD System, and everyone was dancing and having a great time. As Kayti and Nick walked into the room, people they knew waved at them, and they waved back.
"It’s gonna be heaps fun tonight, huh!" Nick shouted over the loud music into Kayti’s ear.
"Yeah!" she agreed. Nick didn’t hear what she said, but from the look on her face he could pretty much gather what she was saying.
Nick and Kayti made their way over to the couch, where Salym sat with her parents. As soon as she spotted them, Salym jumped to her feet and introduced everyone.
"Mom and Dad, this is Nick and Kayti… Nick and Kayti, this is Juniper, my Mom and Dillyn, my Dad." Salym said, with a smile that would power San Francisco for a year. "You wanna know who chose my name… look at my dad… I mean he spells his name D-I-L-L-Y-N. There’s your first clue, Sherlock!"
"I like it!" Kayti said, smiling at Salym’s parents, as Nick stuck his hand out to shake Dillyn’s.
"We’re gonna go get some drinks, kay? We’ll see ya round!" Kayti told Salym, and she grabbed Nick’s hand as they moved away.
"Nice to meet you!" Nick shouted back to Salym’s parents, as Salym stood in front, shaking her head and laughing.
Later That Night
"See ya later, guys! Thanks for coming!" Salym’s words echoed down the tiny hallway as Nick and Kayti left the party hand in hand.
"I had fun tonight," Kayti told Nick. "You?"
"Yeah, heaps fun! So what do you wanna do now? It’s only 12," Nick informed her as they reached her VW. Kayti loved her car. His name was Norm, and it was a bright red VW Beetle.
"Any interesting beaches round here?" she asked coyly, knowing full well that there was.
"Well, if madam is interested, zere is a very esclusive beach close to a certain young man’s house that would suit ze evening very well." Nick played with her, speaking in the world’s worst French accent.
"Sounds great, mate!" Kayti said, playing up to the typical Aussie stereotype. "How’s about we throw another shrimp on the barbie for brekkie?"
"Ahh you!" Nick cried as they jumped in the car.
On the Beach
"Ummm, tre bien! Very good," Kayti told Nick as they walked hand in hand along the beach. Nick pulled her down to sit on a sand dune where they could watch the incoming storm. He knew that Kayti loved to watch storms. Lightning and thunder fascinated her. He had no comprehensible reason why, but hey, isn’t that what love is about? Give and take. Of course, Kayti had no idea of his feelings, and there was no way she would find out about them until he was sure she felt the same way.
"Kayti?" he started, turning his head to look at her.
"Yup?" she asked, her face pointed toward the ocean. A blinding flash of lightening illuminated her face as she turned toward him.
"I kinda have some bad news…" he said quietly. Kayti sat up straight and gave him her full attention.
"Yeah? What? Come on, don’t leave me hangin’!" she protested.
"Well, us guys have got a tour coming up. Europe for 5 months. And I just wanted to let you know that I don’t expect you to wait around for me. 5 months is a long time… and
I … well, I hope you’ll wait for me, but I don’t expect you to… "he babbled, not waiting for Kayti’s reply.
"Nick! NICK! God, shut up for a sec would you! I’m gonna miss you soooo much, but of course I’ll wait for you…" she said sadly, not wanting him to go.
"Are you sure? ‘Cos I don’t want you to think that you have to or anything…" he started again, but Kayti silenced him with a kiss.
"Cutie?" she said as she pulled away. "Don’t worry that cute head of yours. Of course I’ll wait."
"Yay!" he said playfully as he pulled her close again.
*****************************
"Hey you! Yeah, you with the blonde hair. Get that cute ass of yours front and center immediately!" Kayti called as Nick walked up her driveway.
She ran down her front steps and gave him a huge kiss, one she had been thinking about for that last 5 months the guys were on tour.
"Get a room!" Salym called as she and AJ followed Nick up the driveway, hand in hand.
"Ah, bite me," Kayti said softly as she broke away from Nick, breathless.
"Hello," Nick finally said, and Kayti burst into laughter. Nick found himself smiling at the sound of her laughter, and started laughing himself. Salym and AJ just looked at each other and shook their heads.
"Welcome back!" Kayti said, running to AJ and wrapping him in a hug.
"Kayti, settle down! God, anyone would think we’ve been away for awhile, or something!" AJ hugged her back, scolding her playfully.
"Sorry Sir, I’ll be careful not to display any emotions next time I see ya…" Kayti said, looking up at him with puppy dog eyes.
"Oh you!" Nick said, running up and grabbing her from AJ.
"And who are you again?" she laughed, as he turned her around to face him.
"Let me refresh your memory…" he mumbled as he lent down to kiss her.
"Like I said, get a room…" Salym laughed as she and AJ entered Kayti’s place.
Inside Kayti’s Place
"So, tell me all ‘bout it!! Come on!!" Kayti pleaded as she sat down on the sofa.
"There’s nothing that I haven’t told you," Nick said, sitting down next to her.
"Oh, you mean in those 50 letters you sent me? That’s where all the goss is? Alright then. I guess I should probably read them then… Are you sure there’s nothing else?" Kayti looked at him.
"Nope, nothing else," he said, as he pulled her closer to him on the sofa.
"Kay," she smiled up at Salym and AJ as they came back from the kitchen.
Later That Day
(Nick and Kayti are in the pool, and Salym and AJ have left for Salym’s place.)
"Nick, stop splashing me… quit it! I mean it… if I have to come in there you’re in big trouble mister!" Kayti warned as Nick kept on splashing her sun-tanning figure.
"You promise?" Nick laughed at her, and kept splashing.
"THAT’S IT!" Kayti suddenly cried, throwing aside her book and sunglasses which were a present from AJ. "You might wanna watch out boy!"
SPLASH!
Waves over water crashed over the side of the pool as Kayti did her world famous bomb dive, nearly squashing Nick in the process.
He came up spluttering. "Ok, I take you seriously now… but I wouldn’t recommend wearing a bikini next time you do that…" he laughed as Kayti looked down in horror.
"You pervert! How could you!" Kayti blushed as she spun around in the water and did her top back up.
"Hey, it’s not like I’ve never seen jugs before…" he kept laughing as she turned around to face him.
"Yeah, but you’ve never seen mine! Jugs, huh? Oh, maturity central!" she cried, jumping on top of him and pushing him under the water.
As he came back up, he looked menacingly at Kayti.
"You know what?" he asked quietly.
"Nope, what?" Kayti shot back at him.
"THAT’S IT!" he shouted as he came crashing through the water at Kayti.
She screamed as he lifted her over his head and threw her into the deep end.
"You are so mean and horrible…" Kayti cried as she surfaced, gasping for air. "I’m leaving."
"Please stay! I miss you already, "Nick pleaded as she climbed out of the pool.
"Oh you’re so cute, but sorry, that water is icy cold! My ass is freezing!" she told him as she wrapped her huge beach towel around her.
"Kay, well then I’ll get out to keep you warm, then…" he said playfully as he climbed out of the pool.
"I think I can handle that," she looked up at him as he shook the water from his hair all over her.
"Yup, well thanks," she said as she hit him, and pushed him back in the pool.
The Next Day
Kayti jumped in her Beetle and turned on the radio. But the radio didn’t play. Instead, a tape that Nick had recorded for her blared out of the speakers. She smiled, and turned it down, as the tape played.
"Well, you’re in your car, and I’m not, so I decided to let you know once again how much you mean to me. I’ve never done this before, kay, so don’t pay me out about it when you see me next.
Kayti… I gotta tell you this. I think, well… I think I love you. And now that I’ve told you, I have to tell you something else. I MISS YOU! Come and see me, now, kay!"
Kayti pulled her car over to the side of the road, her heart pounding. No one had ever said that to her before, and she didn’t know what to do. Yeah, she loved him too, but it seemed to her that if she went over to tell him that she loved him too, it would be like she had to say that, and it didn’t mean anything. Then, on the other hand, she wanted him to know that she loved him.
She drove up alongside a park, and went to sit on the swings. It was late, and she assumed that no one would be around. As she sat down, a tall guy with dirty blonde hair sat down next to her. She thought it was Nick, and she turned around to face him.
It wasn’t. This guy had a gun, and it was pointing at Kayti.
