Memorial Day, May 28, 2007

With another 2 weeks off since our last race, we hope the car will be good on the Memorial Day special. We'll be the support class for the MLRA Late Models that are scheduled to race at Beatrice. Races are to start at 5:30.

The regular races at Beatrice on May 26th were another rain-out. The rain did stop before noon, but with over an inch of rain after 6 AM, the races were called early. I'd planned on riding to Superior, Nebraska in the morning to go on a poker run, but when I got up and saw all the rain, I went back to bed. With clearing weather later in the day, I gave Jeremy a call to see if he wanted to go with me to Eagle to watch the races there. We took the Gold Wing and had a great ride there and back. Races got a bit long, as the sprint cars had a problem remembering which side was supposed to be up, but overall, it was a good night of racing.

Maintenance-wise, it's been an easy time off. After checking the engine over, everything looked good. I did a thorough nuts and bolts check on the car and charged the battery. So far, the factory stock races have been very clean and I only have a small rub mark on the driver's door. I'm hoping Memorial Day goes well as I'll only have a couple of days to be sure the car is OK for Tyler to take over the wheel for the month of June. My next night behind the wheel after tonight will be on July 7th. I kind of feel like Mark Martin!!

Memorial Day - Once again, Mother Nature won out. We got up to overcast skies, but it looked like it would clear. I started getting everything ready and wanted to load the car, but about 11 AM, we got about a 10-minute shower. After that, the streets dried off, but about the time it dried, we got another brief shower. I made a trip to the track about 12:30 and it looked like it would be a perfect track.

A couple more showers during the afternoon - (including one when I got the trailer on the street and pulled the race car out of the garage,) but they were light. Just before I left, Jan talked to a friend who lives a couple of blocks from the track, and she said it just started pouring there. Another check of the website and the radio, and I was down the street. Looked pretty good going through town, but when I turned off W Court, I met a guy from another race team who waved me over. He told me the races had just been called off.

As much as I'd have liked to race, the weather still looked threatening and I feel like the right decision was made by track officials. There's an added bonus - the car is ready to race for this Saturday, June 2nd with Tyler behind the wheel! Hot laps at 6 PM and racing at 7 PM.
