Notes for JOHN MCLAUGHLIN:
HISTORU OF EGLINTON (http://www.eglinton.demon.co.uk/history.htm)
The village of Eglinton originally known as Muff (Irish meaning a
plain level district) was founded in 1619 by Grocers' Company of
London. As part of the Plantation of Ulster. James I. had granted a
large area 915900 acres) part of Faughanvale parish to the Grocers in
1609. The Grocers did not farm themselves but leased the area to
Edward Rone of Essex in 1615 with the stipulation that he built a bawn
and 12 houses by 1619. The yearly rent being L116-13s-4d.
Unfortunately Rone died inb 1618 but his brother-in-law roberet
harrington took over and by 1619 a castle and bawn and 8 houses were
erected in the townland of Muff (now Eglinton) and by 1622 the
stipulated building was completed.
As there were several other places called Muff, especially one in
Donegal nearby, this caused confusion so the residents decided to
change the name. Therefore on August 19th 1858 the village of Muff
became Eglinton in honour of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the 13th
Earl of Eglinton who was visiting Templemoyle Agricultural School at
the time.
**Notes from Don McLaughlin <mclaughlin@amigo.net> Oct. 2000:
John McLaughlin b. abt. 1758 at Hobie Place, Town of Muff. County
Londonderry, Ireland; m. Agnes "Nancy" McLaughlin on 12 May 1790 in
Ireland, presumably in County Londonderry; d. 9 Aug. 1801 at West
Salem, Mercer Co., PA; buried in unmarked grave in what was called in
the early days Parkers Cemetery.
Agnes "Nancy Mclaughlin b. 1769 Town muff, Coundy Londonderry,
Ireland; d. 28 Feb. 1848; buried at Presbyterian Cem. Kinsman, Truball
Co., OH.
John and "Nancy" with infant son Patrick, emigrated from Ireland
to Pennsylvania in 1793. In 1900 journal of a brother, Bert, of my
paternal grandfather, it is phrased thus: "Came from County
Londonderry, Town of Muff [mistranscribed as Mull]. Went to the mouth
of Lough Foyle (a narrow bay opening to the sea) and bourded a ship
for Philadelphia".
John and "Nancy" were probably tenant farmers on a 15,000-acre
colony (plantation) of the Grocers Company of London. Muff,
established in the early 1600's, was the headquarters for the English
colony in norther Ireland.
The town of Muff near the souther shore of Lough Foyles in county
Londonderry was renamed as Eglinton in 1858 to avoid confusion with
another town of Muff on the norther shore of Lough Foyle in County
Donegal.
John and "Nancy", after arriving in Philadelphia in 1793, lived
in Mifflin County and in Beaver County before arriving in Mercer
County, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1801.
Children of John McLaughlin/Agnes "Nancy" McLaughlin:

Stiles A. McLaughlin
Stiles A. McLaughlin vineyardist and rancher at Lemoore [now King County], was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, in 1852, a son of Wm. H.McLaughlin, a mechanic by trade. In 1862 the latter moved to Pennsylvania, and in 1866 to Mercer County, Illinois, where he followed his particular industry. Our subject lived at home untile 1872, when he came to California, first settling at Woodland, Yolo County, as an employe' upon the fruit ranch of R. B. Blower, one of the first raisen developers of California. In 1873 Mr. McLaughlin came to Lemoore and bought a claim for 160 acres of railroad land, where he began farming, and in the spring of 1874 he received grape cuttings from Mr. Blower, of Woodland. He set out about two acres of vines, and made the first raisins in that part of the valley. In 1878 he sold his ranch and purchased his present place of forty acres, west of Lemoore. In the spring of 1879 he ser out ten acres in fruit and vines, and has since added to the amount of twenty-eight acres, the remainder of the ranch in alfalfa. His vines are in full hearing and are considered very fine, as they produce two and a half tons of raisins to the acre. In 1888 Mr. McLaughlin, in partnership within I. H. Ham and C. L. Dingley, of San Francisco, purchased 421 acres of land adjoining the town. In the spring of 1889 they set eighty acres to fruit-trees and vines, all doing well and just coming into bearing. Mr. McLaughlin superintends the ranch, and its fine cindition is the most substanial evidence of its able management.
Mr. McLaughlin built his handsome cottage home in 1889; and his tank-house adjoining, covering his artesian well, is both useful and beautiful. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. of Lemoore, and of the Farmers' Alliance. Active in all of his pursuits, he is deeply in-terested in the fruit interests of California.
He was married at lemoore, in 1876, to Miss Mary Wright, a native daughter, and the union has been blessed with two children: Wilmot Wright and Aimme Edna.

C. M. BLOWERS
C. M. Blowers, a rancher near Grangeville, was born in Indiana, in 1845. His grandfather, John O. Blowers, was a native of England, and was among the early settlers of Crawford County, Ohio, where, as a minister of the methodist Church, he was first to preach in Crawford County. the father of our subject, Lemuel L. Blowers, with his youn son, came to California by steamer and the isthmus of Panama, in 1854, settling in Yolo County. He engaged in farming until illness came upon him in 1855, and he was called to the other world, leaving his son, C. M. Blowers, a stranger in a strange land, and departed upon his own resources.
He was taken by on Fisher until he was twelve years of age, then he began rustling for himself, working upon ranches until the age of seventeen, when he bought a team and began freighting from Sacramento across the mountains to the mining localities of Nevada. he followed teaming about six years, then came to Tulare County and put in a crop near Porterville, but the season being dry, his efforts were fruitless, and he then returned to Yolo County, rented land and farmed until 1874, when he came to the Mussel Slough district and bought a claim of 160 acres of railroad land, and was one of the first among fifteen settlers to purchace their land of the railroad company ath the first grading.
He was married in 1875 to Miss Susan B. McLaughlin, a native of Ohio. Erecting their little cabin, and the country being to dry to farm, he bought an interest in the Last Chance ditch and began working on the ditch, thus getting water upon his land about 1876. He then put in a summer crop of corn, potatoes, beans and pumpkins, which did well, and in 1877 he secured a fine crop of grain. In a experimental way he planted a few vines and fruit trees about 1878, and continued farming, gradually working into stock, mainly hogs and horses. In 1881 he began settling a larger acreage in vines, and thus laboring, through the profits of farming and stock business, he has aquired other lands and now ownes 260 acres, sisty-five of which are in alfalfa, fity-five acres in vines and thirty in fruit. He keeps about forty head of horses and an average of 25o hogs. Realizing the importance of water Mr. Blowers has closely gaurded his ditch interests and for eight years has been president of the Last Chance Ditch Company. mr. and Mrs. Blowers have senve children: Hulburt L., Mack R., Olive G., Francis I., Bessie, mary and Ralph A. C., all living at home.

Tractor Employes Salute Newly Weds...June 4, 1929...George Knapp the
Wallis tractor man, and Miss Gustie Hippe, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.
H. Hippe of near Bingham, were married by Judge J. H. Hewett In the
county court. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Knapp attended the bride and groom.
The tractor employes had shelled a number of ears of corn, and the
newly weds not only got it in the but all over them. Not only that
but old shoes and old slippers hurtled over the car as they drove away
for their honeymoon in the Black Hills. On their return they will

February 6, 1930...Hemingford Ledger....LARGE QUANTITY OF LIQUOR
SEIZED IN RAID
A big liquor haul was made by Sheriff Jones and Deputy Wyland Monday
night just west of Alliance. Whland was on special duty when a car
stopped by him with two men and two women in it. From the actions
which ensued the officer concluded that a rushing booze business was
being conducted very openly on the street.
As he drove over closer, George Knapp, driver got a hunch that he was
being asked to hault for no good reason so he tried to duck. In his
rush he nearly wrecked three cars and he and his wife, and Peter Hurst
and his wife, the other occupants of the car, were taken into custody
and relieved of a great batch of Liquor.
The sheriff and deputies then decided there must be a source of
supply, so they hot-footed out to the Knapp place west of town and
found one of the most complete operating outfits yet uncovered. It
took a large truck to haul the evidence to the courthouse.
Gallons of "Dago red," two barrels of of whiskey, two barrels of mash,
12 cases of beer, a25-gal still with 1/2 inch coil, pressure tanks, in
fact, a nice modern brewing and distilling joint had been operating
very profitably ther for some time.
All four persons were arrested and held on bond for transportation and
possession of liguor and there is so much "evidence" in the courthouse
that it looks like the officials are either going to have to move or
take to strong drink. In fact, just between us, one of the
commissioners is in pretty bad with the sheriff just now.

CityMarine in Somalia
by Bill Harlan, Journal Staff Writer
A trip to Somalia was number one on Marine Sgt. Becky Knapp's Christmas list, and she got her wish.
Knapp boarded a 20-hour flight from California to mogadishum Somalia, Wednesday night. She graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1981.
Knapp 29, has been a Marine for 10 years. Her parents are Jane and John Knapp of Rapid City.
Jane Knapp said her daughter worked in maintenance and parts. She had been stationedat Tustin Marine Corps Air Station in Calif.
Sgt. Knapp has always had an apptitude for things mechaical. In high school she helped overhaul a Mustang convertable and a Kawasaki motercycle.
and she always had a desire to join the marine Corps. "That's number one as far as she is concerned," said her mother.
Jane Knapp worried about what her daughter would see in Somalia, particularly the brutal poverty, but she said her daughter had assured she was well trained.
Sgt. Knapp had volunteered unsuccessfully for service in the Persian Gulf. "She was pretty bummed out about that. " Jane Knapp said.
She also volunteered for Somalia, "she just wants to go
where she is needed," Jane Knapp said.

THE GOTHENBURG TIMES, Wednesday, July 29, 1998 (Gothenburg, NE)
Performer released from hospital
After nearly a week-long hospital stay, an anxious Zach Knapp, 18, came home Monday evening.
The Cozad youth and his sister, Josie, 16, were involved in a one-vehicle accident one-fourth mile west of Willow Island late Tuesday evening, July 21.
Zach, the driver of the car, was eastbound on highway 30 when the tires of his 1978 Dodge dropped off the pavement.
Pat Glenn, investigating officer, said he overcompensated, lost control of the vehicle and rolled. the vehicle came to rest on the passenger side, 50 feet off the north side of the roadway.
Zach was thrown out of the driver's side window. both he and Josie were transported to gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Zach was later moved to Good Sameritan Hospital in Kearney.
There he underwent surgery on his right knee that reattached tendons and ligaments in his leg since his leg was cracked sideways, according to his father, David Knapp. Zach will travel to Omaha Thursday where doctors will perform microsurgery to repair the demaged nerves in his leg. they'll take nerves from the top of his foot and use them to replace the demaged ones.
In addition to his injured leg, Zach also received a concussion and fractured the seventh vertebrae in his neck and a bone in his wrist. In addition, Zach's head was cut from the right ear to the top of his head.
His mother, Denise counted 10 suctures in a one-inch area but couldn't speculate on the total number of stiches.
He also had no memory of the accident until Sunday.
Zach's father said doctors assured them that the fracture vertebrae shouldn't bother him.
And in comparison to Zach, Josie's injuries are minimal.
Her list of injuries include bumps and bruises, sore ribs, a banged up foot and four stiches on her cheek.
But her father was quick to applaud Josie's heroic efforts the night of the accident.
With the car lying on the passenger side, she kicked out what was left of the windshield.
From ther, she crawled to the highway and flagged down a car.
"I was awfully impressed with her," David said. "I can
brag like a dad all I want."

"Artists start out with a desire and become creative through hard
work. I don't understand it. If i waited for inspiration, I'd never
get anything done. art is a challenge more than anything else i know.
I like challenge," states Schmidt.
Schmidt is a cowby artist. He paints, sculpts and draws the
cowboy, the horse and the environment. He was born in Bridgport,
Nebraska, where his parents owned and operated a large cattle ranch.
Continuing his work as a cowby after high school delayed his degree in
Art Education from Montana State University until 1979. Following
graduation he worked for the Hammer Bar/320 Ranch near Yellowstone
National Park as a cow camp cowboy. That means he lived on his horse
for days, sleeping on the ground, keeping up with the cows. Pencil,
pen, and paper were always with him. Civilization and time were miles
away.
Schmidt met and became "family" to the Crow Indian family of Rod
Cauifild. Spending a lot of time on the Crow Reservation resulted in
a significant impact on his life and his art. "It offered a different
siciety, a culture with different outlook on life that also encouraged
all creativity. It brought simplicity to heart with fascinating
subject matter," according to Schmidt.
In 1990 he moved to Grand County, Colorado where he started a
dude & cattle ranch......................
Schmidt came to Tularosa in 1994 stating that, "The light [in
this area] is the best in the state.".......................
