Gary's Hunting Information Page

This page is dedicated to providing you with the general information you will need to decide if my hunts are right for you. This page covers expectations, weather, clothing requirements, etc.

Special note: I do not guide on weekends. These days are reserved for family and friends

Let's talk about expectations - We will decide upon a meeting site for us in the morning. From there we will travel to the scouted location and start setting decoys. If you would like to sleep in, let me know in advance and I will give you directions to our hunting location. However, if you want to help with the decoys I will surely let you. A typical hunt in the fields will be setting 50 -150 assorted shells, silos, etc. We will lay on ground mats with either Fastgrass or camo netting over us and finally a Super-Mag shell decoy for body camo. This helps to hide your profile. Shooting will be from the situp position. Occasionally, hunts will be from field fringes where standup shooting may happen. However, most good hunting locations are normally in the center of large fields and layout shooting is the norm.

The weather - North Dakota weather is very unpredictable. Mother nature has the ability to throw a wide variety of conditions at you during the course of just one hunt. The weather in October can range from the 80's to the single digits later in the month. Normally, the first two weeks of October are not bad. Anytime after the 15th conditions can become unpredictable. The beginning of winter up here sometimes starts with a 50 degree morning which becomes zero degrees by nightfall. I have hunted on days like this, and by the next day the sloughs are frozen hard. Expect snowfall any time after mid-month. However, it normally doesn't snow until the end of the month. The hunters in North Dakota learn to deal with this wild variation in weather to experience the great hunting which occurs during it!

Recommended clothing list - Everyone handles cooler weather in different ways. Therefore, to explain this my way I will give you two hunting scenarios and you determine the clothing you can afford and need. I stubbornly learned over many years that quality is important here.
Scenario #1 - Warmer hunt where temps begin in the teens and 20s and will warm to anywhere from 30s to 60s. Don't forget about rain.
Scenario #2 -Cooler hunt which starts in the single digits or teens and will not warm up or warm up to the 20s or 30s.

Here is the typical clothing I wear on a mid-October hunt : Good Polartec longjohns, Wool or Thermax socks, Jeans, Heavy quilted shirt, Insulated bibs and parka in Fall Flight camo, Goretex gloves, insulated and Gortex cap, full face mask, and during field hunts insulated and Gortex boots.

Lodging concerns - The lodging is very limited outside of Minot. Several towns like Underwood, and Velva offer some lodging. My best suggestion for lodging is for you to bring along a camper (pickup, tow-behind, etc.) and live in it near the location we would hunt. If you go to North Dakota tourism and go to the lodging search option, you can find most lodging available in an area.
