Chapter Twenty-Eight
“Oh, God.” The pink plus sign slowly appeared in the circle. ‘Do I tell Kevin now? Do I do more tests first? Do I go to the doctor first? He would want to know. I just have to make sure that he understands that it’s not 100%. Do I go to the studio now and tell him or wait until he gets home? Damn, I’m so confused.’
I decided to see a doctor first. He confirmed the test results and I now felt confident to tell Kevin.

“So, Kev, how’s it going at home? I assume well since I haven’t seen much of either of you since the wedding.” Brian smiled at his cousin.
“It’s been great, wonderful actually. It’s perfect. We don’t really want anyone to know yet, but we’re trying to have a baby.”
“Oh, wow, Kev. That’s great.”
“Kev! Nikki’s here!” AJ’s voice could be heard across the studio.
As I walked to Kevin I could feel my knees weaken. I was so nervous but couldn’t figure out why.
“Baby, what’s wrong? You look sick.” Kevin truly looked worried and so did Brian.
“Bri, could I talk to Kevin alone please?”
“Sure, hon.” He rubbed my back as he walked over to AJ, Nick, and Howie. I could feel the four of them watching us.
“Kevin, I went to the doctor today-“
“Oh, God. What’s wrong? Are you ok?”
“Kev! Let me finish. I went to the doctor for a good reason. I’m pregnant.” His jaw dropped and his eyes bulged.
“We’re going to have a baby.” He said it barely above a whisper. “Do you know how far along it is?”
“Yeah, actually, it’s been 10 weeks. It was before we were even married.”
“Really?” I nodded. “Wow.” Then, he did something completely unexpected. He jumped up and ran over to the other guys. They all looked shocked as he grabbed the first one he came to, which was Nick. He picked him up, threw him over his shoulder and spun him in a circle.
“Damn, Kevin, put me down!” He set Nick down and gave him a huge hug. He proceeded to give hugs to all of the guys although they were all very weary of what was going on. That’s when he remembered me. He ran back, picked me up, and carried me over to the guys.
“Is it ok if I tell them, baby?” He looked like a kid on Christmas.
“Go for it.” They all looked on impatiently.
“Guys, we’re having a baby.”
I interrupted him, “Two.” I had five sets of eyes on me. “You didn’t let me finish what I was telling you. We’re having twins.” Kevin just broke down crying. I hugged him as all of the guys patted our backs in congratulations.
“I think that’s a sign to quit for the day and go celebration.” Everyone agreed with AJ’s plan and we all drove to dinner.
“Ok, I have to make a toast.” Brian stood, holding a glass of wine. Each of the guys held their glasses of wine while I held one of grape juice.
“To think that you were only 17 when I met you at that campground. I had only known you a week and you were already one of my best friends. I know my cousin here was checkin’ you out too. The jail bait sign above your head stopped that pretty quickly though. AJ and I talked about this a few times actually. We both agreed that if you two weren’t so much alike, you probably would have gotten together sooner. Damn, this is a long toast. Congratulations you two, well, you four.” Kevin kissed me as everyone tapped wineglasses.

I went to the studio with Kevin the next day. I was scheduled to play saxophone for one of the tracks.
“Hi, Mommy.” I was engulfed by a large hug.
“Hey, Nick. How have you and Hailey been doing for your daddy-daughter month?”
“It’s been great. Are you sure you’re ready to have her back?”
“I miss my baby.” Nick made a pouting face. “Sorry, Nicky, Hailey’s baby faces don’t work for you.”
“Damn. I’ll bring her home tonight after dinner.”
“Thank you.”
Two hands covered my eyes. “Guess who.”
“You two pull this every time. Howie covers my eyes and AJ says ‘guess who?’”
“She’s got us, D.” They each gave me a hug.”
“Nik, I have a question about your pregnancy.”
“Ask away, Howie.”
“If you’re 10 weeks pregnant with twins, why don’t you show it at all?”
“I have gained 15 pounds. I just assumed it was form getting married. A lot of people gain weight in the first couple weeks of marriage.”
The session went well, and I was ready to go home to bed.

The phone rang, waking me up.
“Hello.”
“Well, good morning.”
“What do you want, Nick?”
“Sheesh. I was just calling to say that I’d have Hailey home at 8.”
“Ok, thanks.”
“Go back to bed.”
“Gladly.” I hung up the phone.
“Who was that?” I turned to face Kevin. He had entered the room.
“It was Nick. He’s bringing Hailey at 8.”
“You mean we have six hours left alone.”
“You got it.” I rolled over to go back to sleep. I peeked back over at him and laughed at the puppy dog face.
“Get your ass in this bed.”
