Chapter Twenty

Brian was obviously trying his hardest to keep me from leaving. He was working on making me one of their opening acts. I would only do three or four songs, and I would still have to do percussion for the boys. I had pretty much decided to stay.

“Nikki!” Brian was knocking on the hotel room door. “Nikki! Open up. Where are you?” He stopped knocking and walked to Nick’s room.

“Hey, Bri. What’s going on?”

“Is Nikki here?”

“Nope. Sorry man. I haven’t seen her.” Brian left Nick’s room and went to Howie’s, AJ’s, and then Kevin’s rooms. No one had seen me since the previous night. He went back to his own room and called my room again. There was still no answer. He called Nick’s room.

“Nick, I can’t find her anywhere.”

“Are you still looking for Nikki? You know how she is. She’s probably out shopping. She’s never been to New York before. Go see if Jackson’s still here or knows about it. He’s the band’s security. He should know if she’s gone anywhere.”

“You’re right. Thanks man.” He called Jackson’s cell phone.

“Jackson here. What’s up?”

“Hey, Jack, it’s Brian. Have you seen Nikki?”

“Haven’t you heard? Didn’t your managers tell you yet? They’ll probably be calling you later.”

“What do you mean? What happened?”

“I probably should let them tell you.”

“Come on. Tell me. She’s one of my best friends. What’s wrong? Did something happen to her? Is she ok?” Brian was almost to the point of being hysterical and Jackson could hear it in his voice.

“She’s gone. She left the tour. She flew out this morning. She didn’t want anyone to know until she was gone so no one would stop her. She said it was important, and there was a good reason for it.”

“Oh my God. She left. She told me she’d stay. She said she would. Thanks, Jack.” He hung up the phone and went to Nick’s room.

I wouldn’t have long to pack my things. I’m sure they would think to call AJ and Denise’s house. It’s not like I’m leaving forever. I have a good reason. I’m sure they’ll understand when I tell them why. I just can’t tell them yet. I can’t even talk to them now. I know they would convince me to stay. I have to go quickly so I don’t miss my flight. I just hope they understand.

“Oh, God. It’s all my fault.” Kevin buried his face in his hands.

“No. You didn’t do anything wrong. She must have had a better reason. We have to find her somehow. Maybe the fans could help us. If we do a commercial or ad or something.”

“Yeah. Maybe that could work. We could put something on the internet. If they see her to call a number.” Nick looked anxious to put this idea into effect.

“Guys, as much as she means to all of us, she is an adult. We can’t do this. She must have had her reasons. She’s her own person. We all know she’s responsible and mature.”

“Yeah, Howie’s right. She’s like a little sister to me. Hell, she lived with me, but we can’t do anything stupid. We have to let her go.
