Cross Country USA by Chris Heit

For those of you who don't know, Cross Country USA was an old Apple II game, where you deliver commodities across the country in a text-adventure type engine. I decided to reproduce it for the TI-89 and it turned out pretty well. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did programming it.

Starting out: Run main\ccusa()
Once you start a new game, a dialog box prompts you to select an amount of commodities. This means how many things you need to pick up and deliver before you win.

After this, you will start in your truck. To the right of the steering wheel is the gas gauge. To the right of that is the speedometer. Now, how to play:

Whenever your truck isn't moving, push enter to bring up the command line. Type in a command and it will follow it. A full list of commands is below:

KEY WORDS: Sentences are not required. All that needs to be typed is the key word.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE ANY CAPITAL LETTERS. THE COMMAND WON'T BE UNDERSTOOD.

eat, restaurant, food, cafe: Go to a restaurant and eat some food.
g, gas: Go to a gas station.
guide, u: Use your Commodity Guide Book.
i: See what commodity you need to pick up and where to bring it.
sleep: Sleep. See section on sleeping below.
hotel, motel, inn: Go to a hotel.
exit, leave: Exit your truck.
enter, get in, go in: Enter your truck.
map, m: View your map to see what state you're in & the mileage to your destination.
lights, l: Turn on/off your lights.
money, cash, mn: See how much money you've spent.
wait: Do nothing for one hour.
quit: Quit the game. This also can be done by pushing ESC on the command line.
get: Pick up a commodity.

Driving:
-The four cardinal directions are the only ones in this game (North, West, East, South)
-Driving is from state to state, not city to city (saves space)
-If there are multiple states bordering a side of a state, you will usually drive to the one with the most border line.
-To drive, in the command line, type west, north, south, or east. Alternatively, you can use w, n, s, or e. Still easier is to use the arrow keys before bringing up the command line.
-Gas stations are located in city and about 150 miles apart in the country. (So if you drive a 650 mile trip, you will see about 4 stations between the towns.)
-Once driving, you can't go any way but forward until you reach the city.
-NOTE: Mileages between cities are determined by the distance between each states capitol. In other words, the only cities are the state capitols.
-Your truck holds 16 gallons of gas and can go about 23 miles a gallon. (368 miles before running out)
-If you are hungry or tired, chances of crashing are increased. Each hour you are tired poses a greater risk of falling asleep while driving thus crashing. Don't even think of driving 6 hours if you're tired.

Sleeping:
-Sleep in hotels if possible. You sleep much longer than in your truck and your driving hours aren't as screwed up.
-If you sleep in your truck, chances are you'll be tired in a few hours.

Eating:
-Eat before long trips, and after trips.

Picking up/Delivering Commodities:
1.First check your Guidebook ("u" on the command line) to bring up a list of commodities.
2.Find your needed one and push enter. A list of states is brought up. These are the only places you can get this commodity.
3.Choose a state & drive there.
4.Once in the city, use the command "get" followed by your commodity. Remember, no capitals are allowed. (ex. get peaches, get corn, get a life)
5.If done correctly, a message should appear, saying "You picked up some XXXX!" with XXXX being the commodity. Just think of it when your commodity is chicks!
6.Drive to your destination state. When you reach the city, your commodity will be delivered.

Weather:
-Rain: All this does is slow you down some. You have no windshield wipers.
-Night: Just make sure your lights are on.

Future implementations (if I get around to it)
-Hitchhikers (they were always fun in the original)
-Snow (need some driving hazards, also make rain more dangerous)
-Chances of crashing when you aren't tired or hungry (you know those drunk drivers)
-More commands (adds a little fun with non-useful commands just fun to discover)
-Other junk

Well, I think I've covered everything you need to know.
Have fun, and I hope you enjoy your prize you get for winning!
