Trans Continental Records Clarifies Its Role With Backstreet Boys And 'NSYNC
Source: Yahoo News
ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Orlando-based Trans Continental Records, founder, Louis J. Pearlman, today announced that his company wishes to clarify its position with regard to the Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC. The Backstreet Boys renegotiated their contracts with Trans Continental Records early this year. Terms of that agreement were not publicly disclosed yet the company remains financially involved with the Backstreet Boys and is gratified with the group's continuing success.
``Backstreet Boys renegotiated their agreements with Trans Continental Records, and we are pleased with the terms,'' commented Pearlman. ``With regard to 'NSYNC, we remain committed to the fundamental principles of our agreements that state that 'NSYNC has exclusive recording and other obligations to Trans Continental and that 'NSYNC is first and foremost a Trans Continental Records act that is distributed in the U.S. by RCA, a label of BMG. We are a family. A family not only of companies, but also of people, many people worldwide who helped discover and nurture the talents of these young men within Trans Continental and its affiliated partners.''
Following several reports by broadcast news organizations, the relationships between Trans Continental Records, Pearlman, and the bands may have been mischaracterized.
``Trans Continental Records has made its name and reputation discovering and giving opportunity to young talent,'' said Pearlman.
Trans Continental Records, founded in 1992 in Orlando, Fla., by Pearlman, has developed a reputation, unique since the days of Motown, for discovering, developing, and nurturing musical talent. With sales of Trans Continental artists in excess of 65 million units in over 25 countries, Trans Continental Records boasts several of the world's hottest and most influential pop acts, including Backstreet Boys, 'NSYNC, LFO, C Note, Take 5, and Innosense as well as the soon-to-be-released Phoenix Stone. Recently, Trans Continental has expanded its small, hand-picked roster to include the hip-hop acts Trey D and Mista Brizz. Currently, LFO is number one for the sixth week in a row on the BILLBOARD single sales chart.

Move over, Garth Brooks. The Backstreet Boys are the new hot ticket at Rupp Arena.
The Backstreet Boys' Nov. 27 concert sold out in 24 minutes yesterday, eclipsing the previous record of 31 minutes set for the first of Brooks' three Rupp concerts in May 1998.
More than 1,600 fans were in line at Rupp when 22,000 tickets went on sale at noon yesterday. Roughly 1,200 left empty-handed.
``You can imagine how happy they were,'' said Carl Hall, director of operations for Lexington Center Corp.
The Backstreet fans at Rupp were competing with those buying tickets electronically through TicketMaster.
That explained the fast sell-out, Hall said. TicketMaster also put the tickets on sale at noon.
Besides unseating Brooks, Backstreet broke its own sales record yesterday, which was set Aug. 14 when tickets for its Nov. 26 Lexington concert were sold out in 37 minutes.
About 500 fans were left ticketless after that sale, prompting Backstreet to add the Nov. 27 concert.
The five-member group is popular locally, not only for its music, but also because two of the Backstreet Boys have Kentucky roots: Brian Littrell is from Lexington and his cousin, Kevin Richardson, is from Estill County.
Fans began lining up before 6 a.m. yesterday to buy the Nov. 27 Backstreet tickets, priced at $29.50 and $38.50, plus service charges.
A lottery was held about 10:30 a.m. to determine the order in which fans could buy up to eight tickets each.
``It was over pretty quickly,'' Hall said. ``I would say we got in 350 to 400 transactions before the last ticket was gone.''

The Backstreet Boys make their grand entrance sky-surfing on boogie board hovercrafts. The Backstreet Boys' concert Thursday night at the Continental Airlines Arena was sponsored by the letters "eeeeeeeee" and "ooooooo."
Well, it was actually sponsored by Sears. But even more ubiquitous than department store ads were the shrill squeals of teenage girls in lust.
Before the concert, the first of two sold-out gigs, vanloads of fans on * Route 3 shouted along with Backstreet hits. When asked which Boy has a cat named Fluffy during a radio station's pre-show trivia contest, dozens hollered back, "Kevin, Kevin" and "Brian!"
For a band that began in 1993 as Orlando's answer to the New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys have certainly proved their staying power, thriving while many of their boy-pop counterpart have gone the way of the Rubik's cube.
And it's not the music that's kept them around this long. While they're fabulous harmonizers, the band's treacly confections make Duran Duran sound like Rachmaninoff. Their success is a trumph of good looks, great marketing and the current teen-driven pop movement.
Performed in the round on a purple-hued stage that resembled a hovering starship, the concert was a fantastic voyage through their 10-times-platinum debut, "Backstreet's Back," and their latest multimillion seller, "Millennium," which was released in May.
Flames, flash pots, sparkles and neon orbs of light gave the show a Vegas in Space feel. During "Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)," all five flew through the crowd collecting Pooh-bears and bouquets. Dancers whirled about the circle like a 21st-century "Solid Gold" troupe. Even for parents in Led Zeppelin T- shirts, the concert was surely a grand spectacle.
Each Boy seemed to have his own persona. AJ McLean, the rebel, flashed his tattoos and brooded beneath an assortment of hats. Brian Littrell was a bundle of manic energy, jumping around like he'd downed a quart of coffee. Howie Dorough, the Latin lothario, grinded away with the female dancers. Best looking, Kevin Richardson wooed the girls with come-hither glances and sinewy moves. Nick Carter, the Boy next door, crooned with cow eyes and appeared a bit shell-shocked during the flying sequence.
The Boys entered the East Rutherford arena sky-surfing on boogie board hovercrafts. Garbed in "Terminator" gear, they landed on stage and marched around the circle like an army of killer robots. The ominous "Darth Vader" theme blared in the background.
Backed by a six-piece band, the Boys launched into the thumping "Larger Than Life," a tribute to their fans with lines like, "All you people can't you see, can't you see/How your love's affecting our reality."
Between numbers, Carter egged on the screeching fans. "I know you can do better than that," he said. And they did.
A white grand piano descended from the ceiling before "Back to Your Heart." Richardson, the weakest singer, took a seat and tickled the ivories with some skill. "I'll Be the One" had an infectious melody and showcased Littrell's vocals. Carter opened up during "Don't Want to Lose You Now," howling an anguished stream of high notes. Other crowd-pleasers were "Spanish Eyes," "All I Have To Give" and "Get Down (You're the One For Me)," and their summer juggernaut, "I Want It That Way."
The band was joined on stage by mother-daughter pairs when they performed "The Perfect Fan." Penned by Littrell, the song was a gooey ballad to the band's moms. The daughters got teary-eyed as the Boys took them on a stroll around the stage.
The set's highlight was the Grand Guignol disco anthem, "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)." The band did the Frankenstein and cried their trademark "Oo, oo."
EYC, a trio of wannabe Boys, opened the show.

AFTER nearly an hour of dance-powered songs rendered with nearly flawless harmonies Thursday night at the Meadowlands, it was almost surreal to hear the Backstreet Boys aim their vocal guns not at their hormonally charged young female fans, but at the girls' moms.
From the other side of the round stage, right before the group launched its syrupy slow ballad "The Perfect Fan," one of the boys said respectfully, "Brian [Littrell] wrote this for his mother."
"The Perfect Fan" was a sweet failure in what was a very good performance designed to titillate - an approach that could have been improved only if the seats at the Meadowlands vibrated.
The Backstreet Boys delivered a slickly produced, whiz-bang concert that supported the eye candy with polished, five-part vocal harmonies.
This concert supporting their current "Millennium" disc was supposed to conjure images of life in space in the coming centuries. The stage was a flying saucer, the Boys entered to strains of the "Star Wars" theme, dancing girls wore painted-on Spandex (clearly the fashion of the future) and even the lighting rigs were decorated with finned rockets.
The concept was carried out to the max with a weightless production number in which the B-Boys floated on guy-wires above the outstretched gimme-gimme arms of their female fans and a baby-grand piano drifted out of the rafters.
Adults who could take the shrill screaming of the little girls might have been pleasantly surprised at the quality not only of the vocal delivery, but also of the songs. Among the standouts were "Quit Playing Games With My Heart," "I'll Never Break Your Heart" and "Spanish Eyes."
The evening's biggest round of applause went to "Everybody, Backstreet's Back," the piece that's punctuated with the band's signature electronic "whoop whoop" - something pre-teen voices seem able to emulate with a natural ease.
On this fast-paced, self-celebrating number, the band walloped the sold-out house with no-holds-barred singing, trading lead vocals with each other and peppering the catchy tune with candy raps.
All of the Backstreeters are looking more like men these days than like the smooth-faced heartthrob boys they were. Nick (the blond one) Carter still has the biggest drool factor going with the girls, but bad boy A.J. McLean is nipping at his heels.
The Backstreet Boys continue here with a two-day engagement at the Nassau Coliseum tomorrow and Monday.
BSB and their management has set up a press conference on 27/9, there was no mention of what it is about since they want to keep it secretive, so it'll be interesting to see what they're planning to announce. It says on MP3.com that TLC are also making a major announcement on Monday, so it may have something to do with that.

Girls Go Wild as Backstreet Boys Take Stage

They want it that way and thousands of screaming Backstreet Boys fans got everything they could ask for last night. The smooth-singing teen idols wowed a starstruck all-girl mom-and-daughter audience as they swept into the Meadowlands for the first of three sold-out area shows.
"I love them s-o-o-o much," cooed Heather Tully, 13, of Roselle Park, N.J. "I listen to them every day. They're hot."
The lucky few who scored tickets to the girls gig of the year chanted "Back-street Boys, Back-street Boys" before their heroes came out.
The girls hit a deafening, high-pitched crescendo as the Boys emerged dramatically from billowing smoke.
As the theme from "Star Wars" blared, they kicked off the show with their hit "Larger Than Life."
"I've been waiting a long time for this," said Caitlin Strype, 17, of Staten Island. "I was upset when I didn't get tickets, but we found out on Monday that we could get some."
She and pal Tulin Aldas, 17, also of Staten Island, paid $100 each for their tickets.
The teen crowd sang along as the handsome fivesome A.J., Brian, Howie D., Kevin and Nick launched into a string of catchy hits, including "I Want It That Way," "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" and "As Long As You Love Me."
During "Quit Playing Games With My Heart," each Boy was hooked to high wires. They did soaring somersaults over the audience while dropping teddy bears on the screaming fans.
Marissa Rauser, 14, of Mendham, N.J., and her five girlfriends came decked out in matching metallic pants, black shirts and platform shoes. "We went to the mall and went all out," Marissa said.
Even the pre-teen crowd was caught up in BSB-mania.
Danielle Miller, 7, of West Caldwell, N.J., dragged her dad and a sign reading "Backstreet Boys Rule" out on a school night for the show.
Her father compared the frenzy to a "'90s version of the Monkees. I never heard such high-pitched screaming," said Howard Miller, 43. "They hit such high levels."
After last night's show, the Boys head to Long Island for sold-out gigs tomorrow and Sunday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

WASHINGTON D.C., Sept. 18 From flying skateboards to confetti to fireworks, the Backstreet Boys' "Into the Millennium" tour is a slick, flashy production that is as much about solid pop songs as it is pink velvet jackets and spats. Though the Boys' highly anticipated arena outing was slated to lift off in Florida last week, Hurricane Floyd forced a delay in the touring mission. After a tardy kick off in Charlotte on Friday (Sept. 17), BSB landed at the MCI Center in D.C. for two sold-out weekend shows (Sept. 18-19) packed with squealing, sobbing teens and their beleaguered parents.
While there will always be those you try to discredit the quintet's huggy bear bubble-gum pop, there is little to argue about BSB's solid work ethic. With a new album, Millennium, that has sold a staggering seven million copies in four months, and a record-breaking tour that moved 765,000 tickets within hours nationwide, the Boys could sing in their showers and go platinum. But the precision dance steps, mellifluous harmonies, natty costumes (black leather, button-down vests, Chinese pajamas), and special effects that color this extravaganza are proof of their dedication.
Kicking off with the punchy "Larger Than Life," Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, and Nick Carter slammed out high kicks with their 10 dancers, dashed up hydraulic staircases, and covered every centimeter of the circular stage, set in the center of the arena. By putting the Boys in the round, every fan is provided a swoon-worthy view of their favorite member; judging from the piercing shrieks every time his face flashed across the video screens, Carter, the blond Leo DiCaprio wannabe, is still the fan favorite. He is also rumored as the first Boy to defect with a solo project, even though it is McLean whose gutsy vocals are the standout of the group.
Drawing material from both of their albums, the Boys and their sharp six-piece band funked up the joint with "Get Down (You're the One for Me)," the sure-to-be-a-smash "I'll Be the One," and "Don't Want You Back." The addition of tenor saxophone and percussion coated the graceful "As Long as You Love Me" with much-needed texture, while during "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)," the Boys were swept into the air to somersault and slap hands with fans. Dorough made the sign of the cross and raised his eyebrows skyward before being jerked off the ground. Somewhere, there is a very financially secure life insurance company.
A prime Hallmark moment came midway through the Boys' two-hour show for "The Perfect Fan," a misty ballad written by Littrell for his mother. Five pairs of mothers and daughters were invited onstage to witness the Boys express their maternal appreciation. For those who snipe about the Boys being schmaltzy, this was your moment to jeer.
While ballads such as "Show Me the Meaning," "Back to Your Heart" (with Richardson on piano), and the Motown-inspired "I'll Never Break Your Heart" are sweet, it's the fiery dance crackle of "We've Got It Goin' On," "It's Gotta Be You," and "Everybody ("Backstreet's Back)" that exemplify the Boys' true talent to entertain.
There is no question as to why the Boys have the 'N Syncs and LFOs of this current boy band crop bested their songs are more memorable, their performing ability is seamless, and they jibe onstage with the type of easy camaraderie and confidence afforded superstars. Not only is Backstreet back, but it isn't leaving anytime soon.

Boys rise to occasion: Reigning teen band is cut above the rest
by Sarah Rodman
Backstreet Boys with EYC, at the FleetCenter, last night and tonight.
The chant began early and rose in volume and intensity by the minute, ``BACKSTREET BOYS! BACKSTREET BOYS!'' And at precisely 8:20 last night at the FleetCenter, the screaming began as Nick Carter, A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson, aka the Backstreet Boys, took to the stage for the first of two sold-out shows.
Throughout the energetic two-hour performance - on a flashy, silver pentagonal stage affording great views from all sides - the reigning boy band easily set themselves apart from vocal group peers like N'Sync and 98 Degrees. While employing many of the same techniques - fireworks, ``flying,'' zippy dancing - the BSB's vocal elan, strong material and mature presence puts them a cut above.
The ``Star Wars'' theme played and white fog drifted into the air as the BSB emerged from under one end of the arena to take to the skies to surf toward the stage.
The white boy funk of ``Larger Than Life,'' an ode to their delirious fan base, proved an animated opener as the boys fell into step with their 10 hard-bodied dancers, who ringed a six-piece band in the center of the stage.
While all the boys sing - and their one-for-every-type good looks were beamed on overhead video screens - Littrell easily has the most pleasant style and tone and his tenor pairs lushly with Richardson's velvet baritone. (If there are post-BSB careers to be had, bank on these two.)
Switching between the adult contemporary sax lines of ``Don't Want to Lose You'' and buoyant pop numbers like ``Quit Playing Games (With My Heart),'' the group charmed everyone in the crowd from toddlers and swoony teens to couples and even a large male contingent.
A mid-set collection of ballads sung while sitting on stools center stage sincerely impressed, especially the hip-hop doo-wop of ``I'll Never Break Your Heart.''
The BSB's only problem is their flashy staging sometimes undercuts their emotional connection. For example, the heavy percussion and angular riffing of ``Don't Want You Back'' was convincingly sung with a biting anger. Unfortunately, the quintet were wearing futuristic roller-derby padding and climbing all over what looked like old TV antennae.
Likewise, snazzy-looking zoot suits added little to the smooth blue-eyed soul of ``All I Have to Give.'' Less can very often be more, which includes the overly lengthy band and dancer intros.
In a sweet gesture during ``The Perfect Fan,'' a song Littrell wrote in tribute to his mom, a quintet of moms and daughters were invited onstage for a serenade.
The boys closed what turned out to be a classy night with ``I Want It That Way,'' graciously thanking their fans.

Mad props and extremly large big-ups to the Backstreet Boys - all 765 000 tickets for their 39-city tour of the States sold out in just over one hour! We dusted off the Smash Hits abacus and worked out that they must have flown out the shops at a rate of 212.5 tickets a second!
Iīve finally saw the 'Larger Than Life' video yesterday and what can I say? Itīs the best! I love the beginning when the ship comes and you can hear all of BSBīs old songs, and then when the video starts, the best! I love it when itīs only music and they dance, that was the best! Iīve read that many thinks this is bad video! Why?! I think this video is the coolest thing, itīs gonna win loads of MTV video awards in 2000, be so sure!
On Select MTV they have a chart and BSB was number 1 yesterday with 'I Want It That Way' and 'Larger Than Life' was a new song, so no one had requested it yet, well today BSB was number 1 with 'Larger Than Life', the presenter said:
And todayīs number one is.... suprise suprise... Backstreet Boys!

WASHINGTON - Fans displayed homemade signs professing their "luv" for the Backstreet Boys all over the packed MCI Center Saturday, and the quintet did everything they could to love them right back.
The screaming crowd, mostly exuberant teen-agers and little girls with hearts painted on their faces, was primed long before their heroes arrived, cheering wildly as a commercial featuring the Boys was shown on the overhead screens and amusing themselves with several rounds of the wave while they waited. Finally, about 45 minutes after opening act EYC left the stage, the lights went down, geysers of smoke shot up and the Backstreet Boys sailed through the air on lighted boogie boards to the five-sided stage in the middle of the arena while the Star Wars theme played.
Once the music started the crowd's deafening roar settled into a constant high-decibel presence and hundreds of hand-held green fluorescent lights augmented the show's own impressive pyrotechnics.
The space-age theme effects and sets mirrored the title of the group's 7 million-selling sophomore album, Millennium, and the Boys wasted no time revving up with high-energy tunes Get Down (You're the One for Me) and The One.
When they stopped to introduce themselves and to catch a breath, it was hard to tell which singer had the biggest following.
Each of them - Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean and Kevin Richardson - had strong fan contingents.
They got back to jamming, showing off vocal strength and road polish gained through nearly five years of nonstop touring that sets them apart from their pop competition (98 Degrees, Britney Spears, 'N Sync, et al.). They grooved to As Long as You Love Me in a tightly choreographed routine with their nine-member dance troupe. Minutes later, they dangled from cables above the crowd singing the midtempo jam Quit Playing Games (With My Heart), as Dorough won more friends by tossing stuffed animals to the audience.
The group emphasized the show's family atmosphere by bringing five sets of mothers and daughters onstage to be serenaded with The Perfect Fan, a Littrell-penned ballad dedicated to his mother. Richardson showed his versatility by playing piano while bandmates harmonized and traded leads on the sweet Back to Your Heart.
While the Boys shifted frequently from endearing slow songs to driving dance jams, they never let the crowd's energy wane. When they closed with current hit I Want It That Way, mothers were singing along with their kids.

Weeping teens, dry your eyes.
Despite Hurricane Floyd's best efforts, the Backstreet Boys are back--finally.
The five-member boy band tonight will launch its sold-out North American tour at 8 p.m. (ET) at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Earlier, Floyd's brutal rain and wind prompted cancellations of the group's original road openers--Tuesday and Wednesday dates in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Those shows have been rescheduled for December 4-5.
Tonight, the Boys catch a break. Floyd's gone and the forecast in Charlotte calls for clear and otherwise non-hurricane-like conditions. MTV News' Chris Connelly reported the group is planning a 19-song, one-hour-and-45-minute set. (And for those who relish in such trivia, the expected opening number will be--surprise!--their new single, "Larger Than Life." Available at a store near you.)
Fans needed to be larger than life snag seats for the Boys' tour. In August, all tickets for the group's 11-week, 39-city tour were snatched up in one day, with most of the 765,000 available tickets gone within a mere hour. Ticket sales generated around $30 million.
Hurricane Floyd, meanwhile, has pretty much run its course, allowing the numerous East Coast-based film and TV productions that were shut down to resume action. The Wilmington, North Carolina-based cast and crew of the WB hit, Dawson's Creek, will return to the set Monday, as will the Florida-based company of the network's new family drama, Safe Harbor.
EYC opening for Backstreet Boys
Source: Infobeat
(Launch) - The hip-hop trio EYC will be opening for the Backstreet Boys on the first leg of the Boys' upcoming North American tour, which is scheduled to kick off in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday. Hurricane Floyd forced the cancellation of the tour's original opening dates in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Tuesday and Wednesday.

If you live in Fort Lauderdale, attending a concert is not likely to be on your list of priorities at the moment. With Hurricane Floyd and its 155 mile per hour winds quickly approaching Florida, area schools are closing, shelters are opening, and residents are being advised to evacuate the area; the last thing parents need to worry about is getting their children to the Backstreet Boys' area concerts this week.
Appropriately, the teen-pop supergroup has decided to postpone the start of their tour, originally set for September 14 and 15 at the National Car Rental Arena in Fort Lauderdale.
The tour will now kick off September 17 in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Charlotte Coliseum. Fort Lauderdale area fans should take note that the BSB shows in their area will be rescheduled for December 5 and 6, with tickets for the September 14 and 15 dates being honored at the newly rescheduled shows.

Due to Hurricane Floyd, the Backstret Boys Concert scheduled for September 15th and 16th at the National Car Rental Center has been re-scheduled for Decmeber 5th and 6th. Tickets for the September show will be honored for the new date.
BSB sold-out North American tour will now begin Friday September 17 in Charlotte, N.C.

BSB made the top 10 best dressed list (for the VMA's) coming in at number 5. They were beaten by Korn, Ricky Martin, Jordan Knight, and Janet Jackson. On News 1515 (11/9), John Norris asked Jay-Z who he was sitting next to and he replied with something like, "Backstreet Boys. It was Backstreet Boys then me. I don't know, I must be doin' something right."!
I have search the internet for pictures of the Backstreet Boys from VMA ī99, and it finally paid off, I found a picture on TV Guide (US mag). But that doesnīt mean I have given up on finding more pix, Iīm gonna have more pix of the boys from the event, be so sure!

The 'Larger Than Life' video is going to be shown in USA on TRL on Monday September 13, I think MTV Europe plays it on Monday too.
Ok, did you all see it? Donīt tell me you missed it?! 1999 MTV Video Music Awards was the best. It all started in the Opening Act when BSB arrived, they had like this overlook view and I saw Kevin and the fans just screamed, then you saw a close up on them, and then it went to a break, but when they returned they interviewed BSB! That was so great!
The show was hosted by Chris Rock, and he always wants to be fun, well he tryes anyway, and this time, he joked about all the celebrities who were there. Yes, about BSB too! One of the things he said was:
"Who are gonna be the bad Backstreet Boy? Who are gonna get Britney Spears pregnant?"
When he said that the went over with the camera on Backstreet Boys. It makes me sooooo mad that BSB has to put up with things like that, they just wanna sing and make good music, I have just one thing to say: Donīt joke about BSB, or I get mad!
But our Backstreet Boys didnīt take Chris seriously:
"That's just Chris," Kevin said after the show.
Anyway, the live performance BSB did, that was so good, they first did 'I Want It That Way', a very short version, and then it went over to 'Larger Than Life', that was the best.
BSB had been nominated in 4 awards, they got 1 award, the one most important, because when MTV choose they choose Ricky Martin, but when the viewers vote for their favorite video they vote for the Backstreet Boys! Yes, Backstreet Boys won the Viewers Choice Award!
The other they were nominated in went to:
Best Group Video: TLC - 'No Scrubs'
Best Pop Video: Ricky Martin - 'Livin La Vida Loca'
Video Of The Year: Lauren Hill - 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'.
Backstreet Boys Get "Larger Than Life" For VMA Performance
Source: MTV
Kitted out in black coats straight out of "The Matrix" and accompanied only by a few spare spotlights, Nick, Kevin, Howie, A.J., and Brian -- otherwise known as the Backstreet Boys -- hit the VMA stage to sing their colossal summer hit, "I Want It That Way."
But ballads can sometimes bring down a festive atmosphere, and the BSBs are not the types of guys to dampen the mood at a party. So after the first few bars, the Boys ripped off those long coats and jumped into the aptly-titled "Larger Than Life," the group's next single (and an ode to their millions of fans).
The guys welcomed a huge troupe of female and male dancers onstage for the number, showing off the stage chops they've developed during their recent tour of Europe as well as outfits which appeared to be made of patent leather, chain mail, and black nylon.
BSB fans in the audience cheered their heads off, and hopefully they remembered to set their VCRs at home so that they could memorize the guys' moves in time for their upcoming North American tour. Chris Rock, however, continued his BSB-chiding theme from his opening monologue, noting the guys' performance earned them the moniker "C.W.A." for "Crackers With Attitude."

The Backstreet Boys try to save their fans a buck or two on ticket fees
Which artists fight for consumer rights? Most fans answering that question would probably point to Pearl Jam, who battled Ticketmaster over the firm's high service fees, or maybe the Dave Matthews Band, who routinely keep their ticket prices low. But the Backstreet Boys, those pinup stars of teen worship?
It's true. For the group's already sold-out fall tour, the Backstreet Boys worked behind the scenes to eliminate the additional costs, such as parking and facility fees, that often accompany concert tickets these days.
"We wanted to eliminate hidden fees," says Jeff Kwatinetz, who co-manages the Backstreet Boys. "When we say we want a $38.50 ticket, we mean it." He's referring to the fact that along with Ticketmaster service fees (which artists have no control over, including the Backstreet Boys), fans often get hit with additional add-ons, tacked on by venues and promoters, that quickly add up.
"We're definitely saving our fans money," says Kwatinetz. The company he co-founded, the Firm, also oversees the Family Values Tour, and a Firm employee confirms that tickets for this fall's Family Values Tour, featuring Limp Bizkit, will also come without hidden fees.
Facility fees are exactly that, a fee fans pay directly to facility, as a sort of user tax. They first surfaced years ago under the name "restoration fee" (usually just $1 per ticket back then), and were charged most often by old, downtown theaters in an effort to raise money for refurbishing purposes. Soon, newer buildings began to tack them on their ticket prices as well. Sometimes the fees cover the cost of on-site parking, sometimes they do not.
Amphitheaters today are the most common source of facility fees, as owners try to recoup new construction costs. Some, including Irvine Meadows outside Los Angeles, charge $3 per ticket. Others, such as Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, Mo., and Sandstone Amphitheater in Kansas City, have been known to charge $4 per ticket facility fees. For a single sold-out concert, that comes out to a cool $50,000 in facility fees. Talk about your revenue streams.
Now the trend has moved indoors. Madison Square Garden, and its smaller Theater at Madison Square Garden, both charge a $3 facility fee on every concert ticket sold.
The Backstreet Boys weren't buying it, though, and they demanded venues not tack on extra surcharges to the group's ticket prices. "We went building to building," says Kwatinetz. "It was a lot of hard work. But we felt it was a battle we could win."
