BSB Win Outstanding Contribution Award
Backstreet Boys won 'Outstanding Contribution to Pop' in the TV Hits Awards held in London. Backstreet Boys won over Max Martin, Peter Waterman, and Phil Spector.
Backstreet's Back, All Right
By Karu F Daniels
The scene was, frankly, surreal: members of one of the biggest music groups on the planet hanging out at a world-famous amusement park. The place was the Universal Studios & Theme Park in sunny Orlando, Florida, and the group was the Backstreet Boys. Marking their recent foray into cyberspace via a very sticky multimedia, Stan Lee-produced Internet portal (www.BackstreetProject.com) and a megamillion-dollar endorsement deal with Burger King--which includes BSB comic books and action figures--members of the best-selling supergroup upped the promotional ante a few weeks ago by treating members of the media, key tastemakers, and hordes of screaming adolescent fans to a full-fledged concert at the newly opened Hard Rock Live on the Universal lot. (They also took advantage of preferential treatment by catching a private ride on some of the most elaborate rollercoasters in the country.)
Although most of those in attendance would probably have been happy even if the guys had just come out onstage and said hello, then stood for the obligatory photo op with high-powered execs, what BSB offered was more than the eager crowd bargained for. For starters, pop newcomer Pollyanna (Backstreeter Howie Dorough's older sister) performed a few flamenco-inspired numbers to warm up the audience. Then Howie, A.J. McLean, and Nick Carter took over the stage and performed solo sets, which included covers of George Thorogood & the Destroyers' classic "Bad To The Bone," Santana's "Maria, Maria," the Commodores' "Brick House," and Bryan Adams's '80s nugget "Heaven." While A.J.--in his alter ego Johnny No Name's getup--busted out on a hard-edge rock tip, Howie tapped into sizzling R&B and Latin influences, and Nick--who played some mean drums on each set--mixed hearty vocal bravado with old-fashioned mainstream pop sensibilities. Missing members Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell were both off enjoying newlywed bliss, but the show that the rest of BSB put on made up for their absence.
The Universal appearance took place shortly after BSB wrapped production of their eagerly anticipated third album, Black & Blue, which is due to arrive in stores on November 21. The album's first single, "Shape Of My Heart," has already jump-started the Backstreet hype, gaining instant airplay on radio airwaves nationally and racing up the Billboard charts. Some industry insiders are predicting that the album will be the biggest-selling chart debut of the year, and that wouldn't be much of a surprise. After all, BSB's last album, Millennium, broke first-week sales records and went on to sell more than 21 million copies worldwide, spending more than a year on the charts thanks to the high-powered singles "Larger Than Life," "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely," and "I Want It That Way."
While all the other Boys were taking care of business elsewhere, LAUNCH got a chance to briefly sit down and chat with Howie Dorough, who gave us the scoop on Black & Blue. "We recorded 15 songs," he reports. "A lot of that is stuff we actually wrote, together and collaborating with other artists, writers, and producers. And we got a lot of great stuff from Max Martin, from Sweden. It's really good, exciting--it took us a little over two months to record. It's not so much a different direction...we realize with each album, we want to grow. You listen to Millennium versus "Backstreet's Back"...hopefully our plan is to grow with each album. We luckily got over the sophomore slump with the last album, so I think, this time around, the third album, everyone is like, 'Okay, what do you have now to show us? Are you delivering the goods or what?' So we were very critical, making sure we had the right material.
"At the same time," Howie continues, "we wanted to get more involved, we did a lot of writing. But we didn't want to do all the writing. It's still very new to us, even though we learned a lot within the last five years. There are a couple of songs all five of us wrote together, there's some stuff I wrote with other writers, and A.J. wrote a song with another writer. The material is a little edgier than Millennium; we have a couple songs with a hip-hop sound, we've got seven songs that have a 'Don't Want You Back' feel, to the next level. We've got a song called 'Get Another Boyfriend,' telling the girl to get another boyfriend [because] her man is not good for her. Then we've got a song that has a marching beat--BOOM, BOOM, BOOM--and that's called 'The Call.' It's about a guy trying to be a player, and he's made a call to his girlfriend saying, 'I'm gone with my friends,' and actually he's out with someone else. We also have some good ballads."
The Boys worked on Black & Blue outside of the U.S., recording in Sweden and writing in the Bahamas. "That was lots of fun," Howie says of the latter trip. "We took two weeks down there, and we wrote six songs--I had a song already written that I came to the table with. It was the five of us and the five security guys. We said, 'No girlfriends, no fiancées, no family.' We wanted just the five of us to get away. It was almost like a bonding moment again."
Originally, BSB had discussed the possibility of making the new album a double-disc set. "That was our goal for this album, to do a double-CD, one group one and one individual one. Two songs [for] each person, and each one taking a different style--like me, I'd do the salsa/Ricky Martin kind of thing, Brian would do his gospel feel, Kevin would do his Elton John kind of feel, A.J. would do R. Kelly, and Nicky would do rock. But because of time, we weren't able to do it this time around, so hopefully [we'll do it on] the next album. We want to show the fans, besides being a group, we're also five individuals."
A collaboration with Michael Jackson may also be in the works for the future, according to Howie: "It's not official yet. We did the whole song already--we recorded the whole thing in case Michael can't do it."
In addition to his Backstreet duties, Howie's been doing some acting, but it looks like that'll stay a sideline for a while. "I did an episode of Roswell, the last episode, the cliffhanger, and they want me to come back this season. They want me to be a recurring character; they introduced me as an alien leader. I've had some offers to do some movies, but with the Backstreet Boys' schedule, it didn't work out. And we all realize, we want to give each other space for our individual things as well, to grow, but we've all made a commitment to make sure Backstreet Boys is first. That's the only way for us to stay together as a unit, because if not, we have too many different individual projects."
And how does it feel to be immortalized in comic and action figure form? "This comic book, this was one of Nicky's biggest dreams," Howie says. "He's always drawn cartoon characters of us, with our heads bigger than our bodies; he's an artist and one of his passions has always been to have a comic. And when we did the last tour, we were kind of like in futuristic superhero outfits, but obviously the comic book came after the tour--if we'd planned it earlier, maybe we would have dressed more like our comic book characters. It's one of those things...we've delicately tried to choose our path with our management. There are so many things we could have totally cashed in on, all these opportunities to go out and sponsor this, and show this product and that one, but we're trying to be picky and choosy--we don't want this to be the kiss of death. And that's why we said we didn't want to have dolls of us, per se. That's why, with this superhero thing, okay, it's a different identity. And it wasn't the most comfortable feeling at first. Burger King originally wanted to do these actual figures of us on skateboards for the Kids' Meals, something with our faces on it, and we're like, 'No, no.'"
Momentary discomfort aside, Howie's optimistic about the prospects of the BackstreetProject comic book and portal. "Hopefully," he says, "we'll grab a lot of guys who weren't necessarily fans of Backstreet Boys, [but] who are comic fans. And the girls who are into it--cool!"
Speaking of girls, the recent weddings of Kevin and Brian prompt the obvious question: Is there a special lady waiting in the wings for Howie? "You know," he responds, "now, because of the fast pace going on with everything--I haven't found the right one yet, and honestly, I'm not really looking to find the right one yet. I think you can see within the group, you can see there's some married, and each of us has different personalities, and different wants and desires in life. Ideally, I was hoping to get married at 30, because that's when my brother got married, but that's only in three years from now. I'm now kind of pushing it until 35. I think timing, for me, is everything."
And the timing certainly seems right for BSB to conquer the world.
Boys To Keep Their Faces Off Cover Of 'Black And Blue'
(10/30/00, 3 p.m. ET) - The Backstreet Boys are known to millions of fans
for their boyish good looks, but don't expect to see their faces on the cover of
their new album, Black & Blue, due November 21 from Jive Records.
As Brian Littrell tells LAUNCH, the quintet felt that it was time to try something new. "The album is titled Black & Blue, and it's just gonna be half black and half blue, with the words 'Black & Blue' on it," he says.
"We decided not to go with the picture on the cover just to kinda differentiate ourselves once again from the normal picture on the front. You know, even alternative groups and rock groups now are doing their picture on the front. And so we'd like to try to something a little different."
"Shape Of My Heart," the first single from Black & Blue, climbs nine spots to Number 15 this week on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Backstreet Boys Set Black & Blue World Tour Plans
Although the Backstreet Boys will deliver their Black & Blue in time for holidays, the group won't hit the road in support of it until January, when the quintet will kick off a world tour.
Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean said on Friday (Oct. 27) that the group will launch its world tour January 23 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The date will mark the start of an eight-week North American run.
The group will then take a two-week break before hitting Asia and Australia. The Backstreet Boys also plan to play Europe and South America before returning to the States for another six-week run. McLean said the entire tour is likely to run through November or December.
"It's finally going to be a true world tour," McLean said. "We've been saying we were going to do a world tour for the last two years, but we end up hitting the U.S., Canada and Europe, and that's about it as far as we go. This time we're taking this tour the whole way around the world."
Black & Blue is scheduled to hit stores November 21. The group has already given fans a taste of the album with the ballad "Shape of My Heart," and McLean promises that more up-tempo material awaits on the new LP.

NME World Exclusive: Backstreet Boys 'Black & Blue' track-by-track
Long-awaited, much-hyped, enormously pre-ordered - and reviewed first and in full by NMEPOP.COM... Tell us what you think! popfeedback@nme.com is ready and waiting...
1. The Call (3:24)
As any fool knows, pop songs based around telephones - from Take That's 'Babe' to Blondie's 'Call Me' are all brilliant, and the Backstreet Boys were hardly likely to choose a duff number to open the most important album of their career. From the Latiny intro to a stomping, almost military drumbeat - and distorted phone-call over the top - it's evident from the word go that 'The Call' is an album-opener every bit as 'Larger Than Life'. There's much singing about "The call that changed my destiny" and what turns out to be a quite breathtaking chorus: "I will be late, don't stay up and wait for me/My battery's low, just so you know/We're going to a place nearby - gotta go". Yet another phone-call occurs in the middle-eight, there are synthesised stabs reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys, and the whole thing ends when the caller hangs up.
2. Shape Of My Heart (3:50)
The single - you'll know this one by now. It follows the same kind of pattern as 'I Want It That Way' (spookily a track-2-after-a-big-old-upbeat-number itself on 'Millennium'): long intro, mid-tempo, bloody ace. Obviously, there's the classic Max Martin key change toward the end, with wailing, overlapping choruses and much a-croonin'.
3 Get Another Boyfriend (3:06)
There's quite a dark theme to this one, and the muttering of "Backstreet" in the introduction - sounding for all the world like a Rodney Jerkins-style "Darkchild" - is ominous and scary. Still, upbeat and raucous, 'Get Another Boyfriend' has a killer chorus ("Listen I mean it, there's nothing that he's worthy of/He's just another playa playing in the game of love/This must come to an end... Get another boyfriend"), a scream of "Heyaaahh!", and pulls all the strings you could possibly want pulled.
4 Shining Star (3:22)
This one's the Darkchild production, fairly upbeat but with an R&B edge running through the whole song. Which, apart from an empty refrigerator, is what you expect when you get Rodney in to twiddle your knobs. Also throws up some preposterous lyrics: "You're my shining star that is what you are/There is no-one like you, baby/Angels everywhere, every time you're near". There's the obligatory "Darkchild Backstreet Boys c'mon" bit towards the end, some neat electro-squiggles and an abrupt end.
5 I Promise You (4:22)
"It seems like everyone we know's breaking up/Doesn't anyone stay in love any more?" Oh, it could so easily be about boy-bands. Except, of course, it's not a metaphor at all - it's just about love. The first full-blown ballad on 'Black & Blue' gives us some more heartfelt lyrics. Such as: "I promise you from the bottom of my heart/I will love you 'til death do us part/I promise you as a lover and a friend..." Guitars twinkle and maracas shake, there's a big, flourishing drum roll for the last chorus, and those classic words rear their heads: "What I'm trying to say to you I never said to anyone..." Don't worry, it's not "I've been bonking your dad".
6 The Answer To Our Life (3:17)
Begins with the simple plinking of a piano, but what jumps out immediately from 'The Answer To Our Life' is the synth line, wonderfully evocative of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean'. It's the warmest song so far on 'Black & Blue', and follows a tempo along the lines of 'The One' on 'Millennium'. "Show me a reason, give me a sign/Tell me when we fall out of line", we're asked. "Is it today or is it tonight/We'll find the answer to our life?" Well, sometimes that answer never comes. But it's always sensible to ask.
7 Everyone (3:29)
Again, there are some military-style drums - and 'Everyone' is a dramatic rallying cry for Backstreet fans around the world. From the opening "Let's get on with the show/Let's get it started/Turn the lights down low..." through to the massive chorus of "This one goes out to... Everyone, everyone/We're standing strong 'cos of what you've done/This one goes out to you". Then there's a brilliant bit where they talk about living "in a circus", and a cool circus-organ sound effect twiddles in out of nowhere. Destined to be performed at the start of concerts. Or the end. Or somewhere in the middle.
8 More Than That (3:44)
Shuffling beats which could, at a stretch, be described as Timbaland-esque (but it's a ballad at heart) and a definite Latin feel. 'More Than That' also has an epic string section and the lines, "I could love you more than that/I won't say the words then take them back/Don't give loneliness a chance, baby, listen to what I say/I will love you... More than that".
9 Time (3:54)
You can spot Babyface's production a mile off. Obviously, as a result, 'Time' sounds like it was recorded in the '80s - lots of smoochy 'Miami Vice'-type effects abound - as does the observation, "I know we've changed, but a change can be so good". There really is an awful lot of "ooh yeah" stuff going on, as well as the profound comment, "Time goes on and on every day". Very true. As you might expect from an epic BSB song, there's an enormous key change and much wailing towards the end, as well as the assurance that "Time is what it is, come what may". Backstreet Boys wrote this one themselves.
10 Not For Me (3:15)
In which the Boys use the gift of the extended metaphor in a first verse that describes the "scene of the crime". The "crime", it seems, is the Boys' girl CHEATING!!! "I got a feelin' you weren't true to me", it is sung. You see, there's no pulling wool over the eyes of the Backstreet Boys. Indeed, as they say themselves, "I've got eyes to see that you're not the one for me... Now I know what it's coming to". There's a synthy backing and a middle-eight which sounds a bit like the breakdown in Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'. "Justify my reasons to stay!" demand the boys amid breathy "no no, uh uh"s.
11 Yes I Will (3:50)
And so we come to the most hilarious lyrics by any pop band ever. The whole song's about wanting to hear your partner say 'Yes I will'. "I'm down on my knees/I'm asking you/Three words", the Boys plead. They just want you to say, "Yes I will... I'll give you everything you need/And sometime start a family... with you". Start a family?!?! There's much guitar plucking and plinking, as well as a massive dramatic swoosh into the final chorus.
12 It's True (4:13)
Oddly begins like East 17's 'Around The World' - 'It's True' is another ballad but it's a bit of a corker. It's also very earnest: "It's true, I mean it/From the bottom of my heart/Yeah, it's true/Without you I would fall apart". Well, there's nothing like laying your cards on the table. By the time the second verse swings around, some drums have kicked in, amid underwater-sounding effects, and the best bit comes towards the end: the line, "It's true..." is left hanging in space before a drum clatter (that puts Phil Collins to shame) slams in, and the chorus peels off into the sky.
13 What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) (3:33)
Possibly the most subtly offensive sentiment since Ronan Keating said, "We're all better off when you keep your mouth shut, love", 'What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)' also has the best use of brackets in recent months. "Material things don't matter to me/Come as you are, you've got nothing to prove!" we're told. This ballad is, presumably, for the Boys' really minging fans. "In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need". To which NMEPOP.COM has only one response: U.G.L.Y! You ain't got no alibi! You're ugly!
14 How Did I Fall In Love With You (4:04)
This one - it's another ballad and it doesn't even have ANY DRUMS AT ALL!!! - is about deciding that you fancy your best friends, and is basically 'Dawson's Creek' squeezed into just over four minutes. It's kinda like "best of friends, like sister and brother" and the way everything changes and the fact that they "never meant to feel this way - don't want to be alone tonight". "With you I want to spend the rest of my life", it seems. "Everything's changed..." Blimey!
15 All I Have To Give (A Capella) (3:48)
Written by: Full Force
How's this for a bizarre end to an album: a two-year-old single (which, let us be honest, in the light of what's come since, really isn't that good) done a capella style - for no reason whatsoever! And here's the interesting bit: it's a very special type of a capella BECAUSE THERE ARE INSTRUMENTS IN IT! Anyway...

BSB on track to beat 'N Sync
Backstreet Boys look on track to break 'N Sync's record for first-week album sales, with pre-orders of their forthcoming Black & Blue LP nearing five million copies.
Rival boy 'band N Sync hold the record with 2.4 million copies of their No Strings Attached album sold in its first week. As previously reported on worldpop, Backstreet Boys are pulling out all the stops in an attempt to break the record, culminating with a two-day promotional tour of six continents before the release of Black & Blue on 20 November.
Singer Brian Littrell told worldpop the band decided to experiment with different producers on their new album, including Babyface, to escape the trademark Cheiron sound coming out of Sweden courtesy of hitmaker Max Martin. 'That was a concern of ours because there are so many songs that are written by the Swedish producers and that team in particular on Britney's album and on 'N Sync's album. Sometimes it can be overdone and it was a major concern of ours as a group,' he admitted.
'When we went over there we made sure that the material that we did focused on a different direction to once again try to reinvent ourselves. We have always tried to take steps in the right direction - to be different,' Littrell continued.
Nevertheless, Backstreet Boy's first single from the album, Shape Of My Heart, is another Max Martin collaboration and is due for release in the UK on 6 November.

Backstreet Boys Select Tracks, Amass Street Teams For New CD
With a little more than a month standing between fans and the next Backstreet Boys album, the Boys are putting the finishing touches on the effort and are also looking to their sizable fan base for help in marketing it.
Jive Records confirms that the heartthrobs have lined up the track listing for "Black & Blue," which is due to arrive on shelves on November 21. Besides the single "Shape Of My Heart," Backstreet followers should also expect titles like "Get Another Boyfriend," "I Promise You (With Everything I Am)," "The Answer To Our Life," and "How Did I Fall In Love With You" when the CD hits stores.
The group is also taking a page from the underground promotion handbook and putting together an online Backstreet Boys street team to get the word out about the new release. Fans who visit the official Jive Records Web site (at www.jiverecords.com) are extended an invitation to join what the label hopes will be a massive online street team. Backstreet devotees who enlist are promised news updates and gifts as well as additional surprises.
The group recently unveiled the first video from "Black & Blue," for the ballad "Shape Of My Heart," and B-Boy A.J. McLean has said that the rest of the album will boast various influences, from rock and R&B to hip-hop and country.
The disc will also find the Boys once again teaming with pop mastermind Max Martin, who produced the group's first two albums as well as tracks for 'NSYNC and Britney Spears.

Backstreet Boys To Hit 6 Continents in One Day
BACKSTREET BOYS have announced their intention to undertake a world tour in a single day.
The multi-platinum US boy band are to make appearances in all six continents on November 21, to celebrate the release of their forthcoming ‘Black And Blue’ album. The Boys’ Howie Dorough announced the band’s plans to a US radio station.
“It just so happens that Japan is a day ahead because of the time difference so we can cover all six continents on 21 November,” the singer claimed. “We have a huge fan base in America and we are very fortunate to have lots of fans around the world as well so we wanted to do this six continent thing for them.”
Backstreet Boys are not the first band to engage in one day continent hopping. Def Leppard and Geri Halliwell have both undertaken similar jet lag-defying promotional trips in the past.
The new Backstreet Boys’ single ‘Shape Of My Heart’ is released on November 6. The release of ‘Black And Blue’ follows on November 21.
