And Ricky Martin thought he was hot? Last week, the Puerto Rican pop star crashed the charts last week in style, selling over 600,000 copies and rocketing to No. 1. But the reigning kings of boy pop, the Backstreet Boys, showed Martin how real megastars move records by selling an astounding 1.1 million copies of their new album for the week ending May 23. Yes, Millennium is the new No. 1, and yes, that is a sales record, breaking the SoundScan mark Garth Brooks set last fall when his Double Live sold just over 1 million copies its first week out. Millennium sold an amazing 500,000 copies its first day in stores, which reflects the band's ultra-loyal -- and ultra-young -- fans, who waited in front of stores to get their pint-sized paws on the album the moment it hit shelves. Yet the album was able to sell steadily throughout the week to break the million-sales mark. (According to reports from some retailers, the album might have sold even more copies if stores hadn't simply run out.) Notably, BSB were able to surpass the Brooks sales mark without offering deep discounts. Last year, with Brooks' consent, Double Live was doled out in many stores for under $10, in what industry insiders felt was a clear attempt at breaking the existing sales record. By most accounts though, the Millennium CD sold for the regular retail price of between $13 and $15. And by selling 1.1 million copies, Millennium is already the No. 15 best-selling album for all of 1999.
Nobody is going to unseat the Backstreet Boys for at least a couple of weeks, but other acts were busy burrowing into the Top Ten. Ageless wonder Jimmy Buffet's 31st album (yes, 31st), Beach House on the Moon, came in at No. 8, while rappers Eightball and M.J.G. debuted at No. 10 with Vol. 1 -- In Our Lifetime. Meanwhile, Collective Soul became the latest band to cash in courtesy of Beverly Hill, 90210. The band performed two songs at the show's fictional nightclub, Peach Pit After Dark, and even got an on-air mention of its new album, Dosage. The result: the record jumped from No. 70 to No. 50.
From the top, it was Millennium, followed by Ricky Martin (selling 458,000); Britney Spears' ...Baby One More Time (141,000); TLC's Fan Mail (135,000); the soundtrack to Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace (115,000); Shania Twain's Come on Over (113,000); Snoop Dogg's Top Dogg (108,000); Jimmy Buffett's Beach House on the Moon (100,000); Ruff Ryders' Ryde or Die Vol. I (99,000); and Eightball & M.J.G.'s Vol. I -- In Our Lifetime (94,000).

According to SoundScan, the group sold 1,133,000 copies of its second album, "Millennium," last week, setting a new first-week sales record (see "Backstreet Boys' New Album Shatters Sales Record").
As the group told MTV News' John Norris recently, the pressure for a major follow-up to its Diamond-selling debut, "Backstreet Boys," was intense.
"Was there ever any point where there was a question that there would be another Backstreet record?" asked Norris.
"I don't think we were ever at a point where there would be no other Backstreet record," the band's Howie D. explained. "I think it was just a matter of what was the next step for us. The right step. We had a lot of soul-searching to do within ourselves."
"We went through a lot of stuff... last year," Howie continued. "With Brian's heart surgery; I had a sister that passed away; there's other family members from Kevin's and Brian's families that passed away. We had a lot of business issues that had to get solved."
The blockbuster boy band will start a European tour in Belgium on June 2 and won't be back in the States until September.

The official numbers won't be in until Wednesday, but early word is that the Backstreet Boys may have made history with their latest album, "Millennium."
According to music industry insiders, the Boys' second album might post the biggest first week numbers in the history of SoundScan, the organization responsible for tracking sales for the industry. Early projections tally sales for "Millennium" at 1.1 million, a number that would break Garth Brooks' record for his "Double Live" set last fall.
If the numbers ring true for the Boys, they will not have come without a good deal of work (and exposure). In the days immediately prior to the album's release last week, the group turned up on "Saturday Night Live" and numerous MTV programs, and also taped a live concert special for the Disney Channel.

Backstreet Boys' sophomore album "Millennium" (Jive) sold 1.13 million units in its first week of release, according to SoundScan figures that will be released this morning. The total establishes a new SoundScan-era record for sales in a single week, beating the previous record holder, Garth Brooks' "Double Live," which moved 1.08 million units when it was released last November. "Millennium's" extraordinary sales ensure that the album will debut tomorrow atop The Billboard 200. Unofficial numbers from the larger retailers suggest that "Millennium" sold 500,000 copies on May 18 alone, the first day the set was available in the U.S. To support the album, the Boys will continue to be omnipresent in the coming weeks. They have announced details for a world tour, which kicks off June 2 in Ghent, Belgium, and will star in a Disney Channel special, "Backstreet Boys In Concert," slated to air July 10 at 7 p.m. ET/PT. -- Geoff Mayfield, L.A
The pop heartthrobs have been promoting ``Millennium,'' their second U.S. release, with an extensive TV advertising campaign, and industry observers had predicted smash numbers for the album. Sales data for the week ended May 23 were provided by the group's Jive Records label, which also has the week's No. 3 album with Britney Spears.
The old first-week high mark of 1.09 million copies was set by Brooks' ``Double Live'' in the week ended Nov. 22, 1998. Before that, the record was 950,000 for Pearl Jam's 1993 sophomore release ``Vs.''
``Millennium'' knocked Ricky Martin's self-titled English-language debut down to No. 2 on the pop charts after just one week, with sales of about 458,000 units, down 31 percent. Spears' ``...Baby One More Time'' jumped three places to No. 3 with almost 141,500 units sold.
TLC's ``FanMail'' slipped a notch to No. 4 with nearly 135,000 copies sold, followed by the soundtrack for ``Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace,'' with sales of almost 115,000 units, up three places to No. 5.
Rounding out the top 10 were Shania Twain's ``Come on Over'' at No. 6 (down one from last week); Snoop Dogg's ``Top Dogg'' at No. 7 (down five); Jimmy Buffett's ``Beach House on the Moon'' at No. 8 (new release); the Ruff Ryders compilation at No. 9 (down two); and Eightball and MJG's ``In Our Lifetime, Vol. 1'' at No. 10 (new release).
Any doubt that "Backstreet's back" has been officially eliminated. The Backstreet Boys' third album, "Millennium", smashed the record for first-week sales in the U.S., selling an astonishing 1,134,000 copies south of the border, and wracking up a hefty 192,000 copies in Canada.
"Millennium" squeaked past the previous U.S. high, held by Garth Brooks' heavily marketed "Double Live" album, which moved 1,085,000 copies upon release last November.
The Boys' tally in Canada -- the first country in the world to turn the group into platinum-selling superstars -- was more than triple the sales of its nearest runner-up (Ricky Martin) but still fell far short of the Canadian record. That honour, like so many others, is held by Celine Dion, whose "Let's Talk About Love" rang up 230,000 in sales in its first week of release in November 1997.
During a press conference in Toronto last week, the band's label, BMG/Jive Music, presented three members of the group with five-times platinum awards for "Millennium", signifying 500,000 copies shipped to retailers across Canada.
The rest of the SoundScan Canada Top 5: Ricky Martin, the dance compilation "Groove Station", TLC, and Shania Twain.
SET TO LAUNCH JUNE 2 IN BELGIUM
WITH MAJOR U.S. ARENA TOUR SPONSORED BY SEARS TO FOLLOW IN SEPTEMBER
The BACKSTREET BOYS--NICK CARTER, HOWIE DOROUGH, BRIAN LITTRELL, A.J. McLEAN and KEVIN RICHARDSON--will launch their worldwide tour June 2 in Ghent, Belgium in connection with the highly anticipated release of their second U.S. MILLENNIUM (Jive) album on May 18. They made this announcement Monday, May 17 at an internationally televised press conference held in New York City at Studio 54.
The 42 European dates encompass 13 countries and will wrap August 7 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Next, the group will take a much-needed break before hitting the U.S. arena circuit in September, a trek that will be sponsored by Sears. The group's KEVIN RICHARDSON recently said what fans could expect from BACKSTREET BOYS' new live show: "If someone's never been to a concert before, [it'll be] something they'll never forget," he told Teen People. "If they have, it'll be the best one yet."
Go and check out Backstreet Boysīs Official Site. Itīs sooooo great! Itīs updated and itīs have been changed ALOT!
After downing a breakfast of Egg McMuffins and orange juice, the B-Boys greeted the press at New York's Studio 54 on Monday morning, and announced a tour that will kick off on June 2 in Belgium. The Boys will proceed to roll across Europe until well into August before taking a break and then launching a U.S. tour in September.
The Orlando-based pop stars dropped a few tidbits about their upcoming trek. The Boys announced that the tour will be performed in the round (with the stage in the middle of the arena giving fans on all sides an unobstructed view), and will feature a few aerial stunts with the Boys flying out over the crowd of various points.
The U.S. portion of the tour will be sponsored by Sears, prompting Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell to note that, yes indeed, the Boys have seen the softer side of Sears.
If you can't wait until September to get a dose of the Backstreet Boys, you'll be pleased to know that as of Tuesday, you'll be able to find their new album in stores.

May 13: Everyone loves the BSBīs at the moment, here are reviews of their new album Millennium and of the smash single I Want It That Way:
REVIEW OF MILLENNIUM
'The Backstreet Boys havenīt got much more to prove after 3 albums. They are the worldīs biggest boyband - but are loved of far more that teenage girls who are the base for their fans. Itīs not very easy not to like the Backstreet Boys, because their pop are excellent. With Millennium they have defied hard setbacks like deaths and operations and done their strongest album to date. Denniz Pop are watching over the exciting production, and are the maker of alot of songs. His cloak has, with the honour, put on The Cheiron Gang with Max Martin in the lead, and the songs they have written/produced are fantastic! The tough Larger Than Life are close to be the song of the year, and some of the ballads are gonna be classics. The Backstreet Boys are the best!'

SINGLE OF THE FORTNIGHT;
BACKSTREET BOYS - I WANT IT THAT WAY
'They say you donīt know whatyouīve got ītil itīs gone. Well, ww missed Backstreet Boys, and when you hear their storming new single youīll remember why. No-one else does pop this well, no-one lse packs so much into three minutes and no-one has deserved Sinle Of The Fortnight more. This is full-on, finger-out, power pop. Itīs the Boys back to their blistering best. It has to be number one, so go buy it!
SINGLE OF THE FORTNIGHT;
BACKSTREET BOYS - I WANT IT THAT WAY
Backstreetīs Back, Back, Back! This delish' first taster from the Boys' new album should soothe anybody suffering from PMT (Pre-Millennium-Tension). A simple pop song (not really dancey, not too slow) featuring all five BSBīs on lead vocal, I Want It That Way sounds like absolutely nobody except the Backstreet Boys. And thereīs nothing wrong with that!
Below you will find a tour around the new BSB album Millenium:
1) Larger than life
Howie: An anthem. It's for our fans.
Kevin: We've been through a lot over the past years. The fans are the ones that make it wortwhile.
2) I want it that way
Howie: This is the first single. It's written by
the same guy that wrote Everybody and We've got it
goin' on. It's a kind of cross between As long as
you love me and Quit playin' games.
3) Show me the meaning of being lonely
Kevin: This is a song about loss. It could be
about losing a girlfriend or boyfriend in a
relationship, or about losing a family member. I
love it; it's one of my favourite songs.
Howie: It's got some Spanish-style acoustic
guitars in it. It's cool.
4) It's gotta be you (co-written by Nick and Brian)
Kevin: That's probably going to be a single, and
it'll be a great one do do live. Nick and Brian
did some writing on this track.
5) I need you tonight
Kevin: Nick's sung this on tour for about six
years, and we've finally got round it to putting
it on an album.
6) Dont' want you back
Howie: We've messed the rhytms up on some songs so
they sound different. This is about falling out of
love rather than falling in love.
7) Don't wanna lose you now (co-written by Nick)
8) (I'll be) the one (co-written by Brian)
Howie: This is kinda uptempo and it has a lot of
acoustic guitar in it.
Kevin: This is another of my favourites, it's a
good fun song.
9) Back to your heart (co-written and co-produced by Kevin)
Kevin: I wrote this; I play bass and keyboards and
a bit of percussion on it. We recorded it in
London.
10) Spanish eyes
Howie: This is a very, very pretty song. I really
enjoy singing this one and it's good do dance to.
11) No-one else comes close
Kevin: this is a version of a song by a guy called
Joe. It's been remixed in a Backstreet Boys style.
12) The perfect fan (written by Brian)
Brian wrote this song for his mother.
In an interview for BBC's Fully Booked (UK), last Sunday, Howie said the following about the worldtour: they'll kick of the tour in Europe in June, then they'll probably tour in the US and Canada in September / October, probably South America in December and then in the beginning of 2000 they'll go to Asia! Brian explained that they devided the tour in several "leggs" and that they will take some time off in between of the tours.
