The Backstreet Boys have conquered the world last year, and yet, at the crux of their mingboggling success is a guy who just wants to dribble and shoot, maybe play a video game-"just, you know, live," says Nick. When the youngest Boy is at home in Tampa, "I don't care of people see me with my hair sticking out to there. It's just me." But when he's in work mode-as he is now, embarking on a tour with the guys he calls his "brothers" to support their new album, Millennium-look out. Nick's soulful voice and dead-on dance moves invoke screams that defy decibal measurement. Despite phenomenal fan appreciation and even a Best New Artist Grammy nod, he still years for more: "the big 'R' word." Ah, respect. "That's something every artist in the industry wants," he says fervently. "That's one goal I have." In our eyes, he's already there.
Backstreet Boys fans starved for a fresh glimpse of the fellas will soon be appeased.
The Boys' new video, "I Want It That Way," will make its world premiere on May 5 on MTV's "Total Request Live." The video will be the group's first from its upcoming album "Millennium" and will give fans their first taste of new material since the group's breakthrough, 1997's "Backstreet Boys," which sold more than 10 million copies.
The single hit radio recently, and the band shot the video in Los Angeles three weeks ago with director Wayne Isham (the man behind Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca," 98 Degrees' "The Hardest Thing," and, back in the day, Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home"). As we previously reported, the Boys took to Los Angeles International Airport to shoot the clip, which promises to be heavy with performance footage (see "Backstreet Boys Wrap New Video As Kevin Spreads 'Millennium' Fever").
The video premiere will be the first in a string of Backstreet MTV appearances, which will include "Backstreet Boys Favorite Videos," turns on "TRL," and a live concert special titled "Backstreet Boys Live." The Backstreet avalanche will flow throughout May with the group's many appearances coming before "Millennium" hits stores on May 18.

BSB has changed the realese date of their new single from April 26 to May 5.
This is Jiveīs add for BSBīs new album Millennium:
This is a question posted on Fred's Chart Beat on April 16, '99
Hi Fred!
I have another Backstreet Boys question for you. The Boys are set to release their third album (second for the U.S.), "Millennium," on May 18. How do you think this album will do on the charts? All of the singles off of their last album were most successful on adult contemporary radio -- do you think this album will help them finally shake off the "teenybopper" label they're always stuck with? Also, do you know if the first song off of the album, "I Want It That Way," will be commercially released, and how do you think it will do on the charts?
Tammy Putman - Dallas
Dear Tammy,
I think the anticipation for the new Backstreet Boys album will be so great that it will have a great chance of debuting at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, even though their first U.S. release only peaked at No. 4. And I think the group's success at adult contemporary radio means they have already shaken off a lot of their teenybopper image. "I Want It That Way" debuts on this week's Hot 100 at No. 72 as an airplay track. They haven't had a No. 1 single yet -- "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" is their highest-charting single to date, having peaked at No. 2. Maybe this one will take them all the way?
The new import single for "I WANT IT THAT WAY" will feature the B-sides: "My Heart Stays With You" and "I'll Be There For You. "
INTERVIEW FOR ZTV
(talking about Denniz PoPīs death)
Howie: I think when we all got back to the studio, first of all just hearing about it, we did a special tape for him, when we heard that he had cancer.
A little cassette tape, just to let him know that we were thinking about him.
Brian: A get well wish.
Howie: A get well wish, yeah, and hoping that everything, you know, overcome. But then we heard the news and it was very hard for us to accept at first. I think it was even harder to going back to Sweden when were there to record. Just being in the studio, just knowing that he in presents were there ones, but were no longer therem but all the guys at the studio, you know, are all very nice to us. The familly is getting back together, but itīs not ever gonna be the same without Denniz.
About Split roumors & critics
Howie: If everything was going great for us, after a while, people probably get tired hearing about the Backstreet Boys.
Itīs contreversy going on here and there are people, you know, wanna hear about it. But all the contreversy is not amongs us, Itīs amongs the people talking about us. We all knew about, when we got into to this that is probably was going to be that way, so thatīs why we are just here to proove to everybody that we are still strong.
Then Howie looks into the camera and starting to snap with his fingers and you can hear Kevin in the background, then Brian pops up and says:
You heard it first on ZTV!
Then back to the pressconference!
They sing I Want It That Way a capella and after that Kevin says:
Itīs just a little bit.
Note: Every BSB site on the net has said that BSBīs album is gonna be out May 18, even the official site, but Howie himself says in this interview that itīs gonna be a out a day earlier; May 17.
Howie was interviewed over the phone by Zoe (presenter of the show) on BBC1 (english radio channel). You can listen to it here but you can also read the transcript here:
Howie from the Backstreet Boys chatted to Zoe Ball on the phone about their forthcoming tour and new single.
Zoe:"Hey Howie, how are you babe?"
Howie: "I'm fine. How you doing?"
Zoe: "I'm OK. I'm really cool. I'm getting married
by the way."
Howie: "You're getting married? Oh my goodness ..."
Zoe: "I bet you're heart-broken."
Howie" You're walking the plank, hey (all laugh)."
Zoe: "Yeah thanks for putting it like that."
Howie: "Who's the lucky bloke?"
Zoe: "His name's ... have you ever heard of Fat
Boy Slim?"
Howie: "Who? (All laugh)."
Zoe: Let's move on. Where the devil have you young
lads been?"
Howie: "We've been working believe it or not.
We're finally getting things kicking-off for us in
America - spent a little time over here in our
homeland, trying to get America caught up with the
rest of the world and now we're back."
Zoe: "Is it true that you own a few properties?"
Howie: "Well I'm trying to be wise with the money
I earn and getting involved in real estate
ventures."
Zoe: "So when can we expect to see you again on
tour - when are you on the road again."
Howie: "We're kicking off our world tour over here then on June 10th we hit Manchester, June 11th Newcastle, 13th Birmingham and the 16th and 17th will be in Earls Court."
Zoe: "So tell us about the new single."
Howie: "It's called 'I Want It That Way' and it's being released in England on May 3rd and the album will be out on May 17th."
Zoe: "I have to say, you're very professional! Good luck with new single and give our love to all the Boys and make sure you pop in for a coffee next time you're over."
BSB were on ZTV nytt today, itīs a swedish news program, ZTV were in Germany, cause BSB had an presscoference there, Iīll put the interview up later.
BSB were on MTV news today too. Hereīs the interview:
A.J.: When you walk into the venue, you feel that you are in a whole new world, a whole new city, a whole new everything. It just a really good vide and I mean the fans, like Kevin said a couple a days ago, you know when the fans, fans thatīs seen our showīs before, you know, that are expecting something big. This is something big. And for people that have never seen our show before, we want both people tp leave our show with this everlasting expression of the Backstreet Boys.
Nick:The main thing, is gonna be fun for us too. I think they way weīre doing it and everything, itīs just gonna be an adventure for us, adventure of a lifetime, not only for the fans but for us too.
BSB TALKING ABOUT THEIR NEW SINGLE
I WANT IT THAT WAY:
Nick:'It really kind of fitīs with like a bridge to cross over. And itīs a really simple song and personally I think we all just came together and we thought it was a great song to come out with.'
Kevin:'Weīve kind of wanted to come with a up-tempo. Something that just came right out like;
Boom, here we are again' (Nick makes a funny noice).
Howie:'Thatīs Backstreetīs Back.'
Kevin:'We discussed it with our label and we figure, like Nick said, this was a good song that kind of remind you of the last album and itīs a good way tp carry over to the new, so we save the up-tempo for later on.'

Second Spin For Backstreet Boys (CBS This Morning)

If you bought the first album, they want you to buy the second album. Your little sister, too.
(CBS) The Backstreet Boys are about to find out if history really does repeat itself, with a new single on the airwaves and a new CD, Millennium, on the way, reports CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.
Can the singing group repeat the success they enjoyed with their first album? Top 40 radio personality Rick Dees says he thinks so; he really liked the new single. "Once you hear it, like, two times, you're singing along with it," says Dees. "That's the key. After maybe the 300th play, I might get tired of it. But right now, I love it!"
Last year, the Backstreet Boys' romantic love songs sparked global hysteria among teen-age girls and a successful U.S. concert tour.
The members of the Backstreet Boys are Howie Dorough (Howie D.), 25; Kevin Richardson, 26; Nick Carter, 19; Brian Littrell, 24, and A.J. McLean, 21.
"We're gonna try not to pressure ourselves to try to compete with the last album," says Dorough.
"We feel like it's our best stuff yet," adds Richardson. "We're really proud of it."
On a more practical level, Carter says, "We're hoping that everybody who bought those 10 million albums [the first time] are gonna do it again."
"And their little sisters," interjects Dorough.
The Backstreet Boys also helped write some of the songs on Millennium.
"It's an emotional feeling that you would never dream of," says Littrell. "I mean, it's great to have thousands of fans screaming your name and singing all the lyrics to the song. But when they're singing something that came from your heart, it's a different thing."
This seemingly overnight success story was almost seven years in the making. Their first single, We've Got It Goin' On, fizzled in the U.S. but sizzled in Europe. And they have their share of detractors. What are some of the worst things they have heard?
"From small insults to big ones. I can't say," says McLean. "You're not going to make everybody happy."
Adds Carter, "I'll tell you what the insults do. They just make you strive harder, make you work harder to prove them wrong."
McLean recalls, "And everybody looked at us, and kind of snickered, 'Yeah, they're a big flash in the pan. Give 'em one year and they'll be gone.' And little did everybody know. We've been around for six, almost seven years, and it feels good to get out there and gain respect, not only for from the industry, but from other artists out there."
The Boys were interviewd by Mark McEwen. They talked about how the Boys handled all of the critics and the 7 years it took for them to become an overnight success. They sang a verse of AIHTG towards the end of the segment. After the segment finished, co-anchor Jane Robelot asked if they had the right stuff and if they were going to last. In response, Mark McEwen likened them to the Beatles saying that wherever they go they get mobbed. Robelot then asked if they would be called "Backstreet Men" when they got older (Yawn). McEwen pointed out that the Beach Boys never had to change their name.
The video for "I Want It That Way" was filmed in Los Angeles on April 1st, 1999. Directed by Wayne Isham who's recently directed "The Hardest Thing" for 98 Degrees and "La Copa De La Vida" for Ricky Martin. The video will be called "I want it that way/I want it that way" because there are 2 versions of the single on radio.
100 Backstreet Boys fans were recruited by radio station KIIS FM in LA for the video shoot. Fans were instructed to dress up as the Backstreet Boys biggest fans with bsb t-shirts, signs and any other BSB gear they had! The chosen fans got on a bus with BSB and also had to stand in some kind of circle formation for the video shoot.
The video was shot in a hanger at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) until early in the morning - 4:30am. Most the the filming took place in front of blue screens. The basic theme is "Backstreet VS Armegedon". The video will apparently include shots of the BSB in different locations around the world:
Nick: "To save himself from falling down a
waterfall, he swigs on a vine"
Brian: "Fights some gladiators"
Kevin: "Gets in his jeep to drive to the beach,
and ends up in ancient Eygpt"
Howie: "Ends up running with the bulls in Spain"
AJ: "Is in a palace of some sort"
Here's what Nick had to say about the new single "I Want It That Way":
Well our good friend Max Martin wrote the single. It's one of the songs that we recorded while we were in Sweden. Max is the guy who wrote, "As Long As You Love Me", "Everybody", and "Quit Playing Games" for us. Hopefully this song will do as well as all of those did. The song has a bit of a theme. It's basically like a message to all our fans. Kind of like a thank you, in a way, but also it explains a little of how we are feelings are towards them, and what their's are towards us. We love our fans a lot, and without them we wouldn't be where we are today. Even though me and Brian sang the leads in the song, all the guys have their own solo part, so everyone will be able to hear all of us sing sometime during it.
April 7:
This is taken from MTV:
After a few months out of the spotlight, the Backstreet Boys are gearing up for the release of its sophomore album, the appropriately titled "Millennium," and have firmed up plans for a new single and a Disney-sponsored concert special. The Boys will issue a single for "I Want It That Way" on May 18, and the vocal quintet has just completed a video for the song, directed by Wayne Isham.
A week before the song hits radio, the Backstreet Boys will travel to New York City to tape a performance at the New Amsterdam Theater -- the current home of Disney's Broadway production of "The Lion King" -- for a special hour-long special. The "Backstreet Boys in Concert" will then make its broadcast premiere on the Disney Channel on July 10 at 7:00 p.m.
The Disney special comes in the wake of last month's successful pay-per-view special, which was taped at the group's 1998 homecoming show in Orlando, Florida.
But if the small screen doesn't get you close enough to the Backstreet Boys, then you can catch the group live and in person this summer, when the Boys plan on launching an extensive world tour in support of "Millennium."
The Backstreet Boys just finished shooting a video at the Los Angeles International Airport for their upcoming single "I Want It That Way" late last week.
The video will feature mainly performance footage and is being directed by Wayne Isham, who previously helmed Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" and 98 Degrees' "The Hardest Thing." It is expected to air in early May.
The single, due out on April 12 worldwide, will be the first cut released off "Millennium," the follow-up to the band's self-titled debut, which recently received the Diamond Award for U.S. sales of over 10 million units.
At the Los Angeles premiere for the film "Never Been Kissed," the group's Kevin Richardson spoke to MTV News about what we can expect from the new album.
"It's definitely the Backstreet Boys," he said. "We haven't gone hardcore alternative rock or anything. It's the Backstreet Boys sound, just more good music. Hopefully our fans are going to love it."
"Millennium" is expected to hit store shelves on May 18 and will be followed by a world tour. Dates and opening acts have yet to be announced. We'll keep you posted.
Great news for us European fans: the BSB will come to Europe for a promotion tour! Also, keep checking teletext etc. because I'm pretty sure that they will appear in more tv shows and magazines!!
