THE REMAKING OF A NATION
Nehemiah 11:1-12:47
- those that would live in Jerusalem - 11:1-24
- how Jerusalem was populated
- by lot ( 1 in 10) -1 (this could have been a situation in which there was much complaining)
- some willingly offered to live there - 2
- these all were willing to do whatever God wanted them to do
- made willing by God’s power working in them
- a willing heart is a wise heart
- it is a sign of wisdom when ones whole life is devoted to the service of God
- call "the holy city" - 1
- it was the place that God had chosen to dwell in
- one would have thought that all the holy seed would have chosen to dwell there
- to strict for them
- Jereusalem was a place hated by the heathen
- worldly advantage to living in the country
- those who lived in the surrounding villages - 11:25-36
- the land that was inhabited was that of Judah and Benjamin
- the Levites dwelt among both - 36 (to ensure adequit teaching for all Jews)
- list of priest and Levites - 12:1-26
- dedication of the wall - 12:27-47
- it was a time of great joy and triumph
- reason for a dedication
- a solemn thanksgiving to God for His great mercy
- a token of their acknowledgmentthat they were His servants
- an acknowledgment that they were dependant on God’s protection and support
- the solemn ceremony
- they purified themselves - 30
- they walked around the wall in two companies to signify that all is dedicated to God
- the people had great rejoicing - 43
- God had caused them to rejoice
- He had given them both the reason for rejoicing and the heart to rejoice
- His grace made them cheerful and thankful
- the good effect of the revival and dedication
- the ministers labored more faithfully - 45
- the people were more faithful in caring for their ministers - 47
