Concert Funded by Students' Money

I made my way to the student union to pick up my daisies in the Campus Attractions office in the Memorial Union (room 344 to be exact). Daisies? Where do daisies come into play? Well, a marketing idea that I had was to use daisy pinwheels, which are those plastic flowers that sit on a metal rod and spin rapidly in the North Dakota winds, to advertise for a rock band from Minneapolis, MN named Dazy Head Mazy. By the way, this band will be performing Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 8 p.m. on the east patio of the Memorial Union.
I put two stickers, which had the band’s name and logo on them, on each of these daisies. I then proceeded to spend my Sunday afternoon distributing them at high traffic locations around campus. I rewarded myself for my productivity by doing a bit of shopping and having a nutritious meal at Burger King. When I returned to campus early Sunday evening, I was surprised to find that three of these flowerbed frequenters were stolen!
You may be saying to yourself, “What does this guy expect? Of course there is going to be some daisy addict that would enjoy making that popular flower a permanent fixture in his/her living quarters.” Quite right! I wasn’t surprised that three of the ten daisies were missing, but I couldn’t believe that they were missing merely two hours after I put them up.
My first instinct was to say, “Hey! Someone stole my daisies.” Those daisies were put there to advertise for Dazy Head Mazy on Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 8 p.m. on the east patio of the Memorial Union. Then, I quickly realized that they weren’t my daisies. Every student that pays tuition owns those daisies, which had a total value of $15.75. (Can you see where this is going?)
Campus Attractions is the student programming board for NDSU that is responsible for providing informative, educational, and ENTERTAINING programs to the NDSU community. Our events include bands, comedians, musicians, hypnotists, weekly movies, among others. We pride ourselves on running these programs at no admission charge to NDSU students and staff. Did I mention that we are sponsoring a Minneapolis-based rock band called Dazy Head Mazy on the east patio of the Memorial Union on Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 8 p.m. free of charge?
It can be very costly to provide regionally and nationally known talent to a college campus. One thing that we ask you to realize is that YOU are paying for that performer to be here. A portion of every student’s tuition is used to provide these programs. On the same token, every student’s tuition was used to pay for those three daisies that were stolen. Essentially, someone stole your daisies, and you should take it personally!
The point of this commentary is to invite everyone to put their tuition dollars to work and attend Campus Attractions sponsored activities throughout the year. We provide monthly calendars of our upcoming activities, and we advertise through posters and other resources. Our office is located in 344 of the Memorial Union. We are always looking for feedback, suggestions, and interested individuals to assist us with our programs. Most importantly, the Campus Attractions staff thanks you for your support. It is wonderful to see many familiar faces at our events.
To the person(s) that stole the student body’s daisies: I invite you to attend Dazy Head Mazy on Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 8 p.m. on the east patio of the Memorial Union. It’s gonna be a blast!
