Why This?
About
the web-page business... In case you are harbouring doubts regarding what
good
comes from putting one's personal life on the web...and why?
First
of all, take a look at the place itself, The World Wide Web, the ground
on which
we´re all raising our small tents, offering various things of interest.
The web is the first and only world wide unlimited exhibition space.
It´s made by man for man, and everyone is allowed to contribute to
it.
Everyone can forge exactly the page that suits his/her personality and
still, everyone will
be unique, as there is no expectations.
As you all know, the web is pretty popular; corporations use it, associations
use it and
whole countries use it in order to represent themselves. However, the most
frequent thing
of the web are people, individuals, setting up their own, personal homepages,
containing
their passions and horrors, made out of love, loneliness or just plain
curiosity.
Say you find a page about Donald
Duck, one that isn´t made by Disney,
but by a guy
who simply happens to love that comic and decides to express it.
He puts up a page, putting all his energy and creativity into it, showing
a picture of his
collection, Donald trivias, the reason why he started and so on, expressing
his passion
online.
Then, what does he get out of that effort? Naturally, people who are interested
will find
out what he is doing and he will hear from people who share his love for
Donald. Maybe,
his work will even inspire other fans to produce a web-page of their own,
and before soon
there will be a dedicated group of Donald Duck-enthusiasts online, forming
a
web-community.
The web connects people...and it does so way and far better than Nokia.
Why
put details about your personal life online?
Well, what would you rather read - a brochure, an information-pamphlet,
or a heartfelt
tale or personal perspective?
If we put our lives online, the web will act like a mirror, reflecting
ourselves, and
humanity.
After all, the web is what we make it.
Do we want to see our own feelings, our joys and sorrows reflected in the
virtual world,
or do we want a point-and-click shopping mall? Not saying that both won´t
exist, but when
you sit down to make your own page, think about what you´d rather
would want to see.
So
why would anybody care about all that personal stuff?
When writing about your life, your interests, your philosophy, your opinions,
or whatever your passion may be...
you make something unique out of everyday existence.
If you´re excited about something in the real world, and if you manage
to transmit that enthusiasm, that depth of feeling online, people will
find it, respond to it and come back to
it.
That they would do so is flattery, and they will... Because, first of all,
people are curious
by nature. And furthermore, we are lonely, and we are in need of more friends,
or people
who´ll listen to us and understand us.
Everyone has a story to tell...
People read ours and we like to read other people´s as well,
maybe as some sort of confirmation of that we are not alone out there.
Besides, if you make a page and somebody doesn´t care, s/he doesn´t
need to go there,
but noone will be at your place to spit in your face or laugh at you. They
wouldn´t care to
visit if they weren´t interested.
As
for the graphics, I don´t consider it necessary to fill out the page
with
java/frames/smiling/flashing/spinning/beeping little objects.
Do you need a Dom Perignon to quench your thirst? A Ferrari to drive? Or
maybe a Rolex
to check what time it is?
When thinking about it, those super-advanced graphics prevents a lot of
people to actually
get the message on a page, as they doesn´t have the time/will/energy/technology
to wait for everything to load. And if a page is built up with a lot of
graphics, some of it´s meaning will disappear with it.
After all, the text is the core of as good as every page, and there´s
so incredibly much that
can be said or transmitted with just simple writing.
