Chapter 40

Isaac called his brothers in his room after he went through his box. He explained quickly about the box. He opened it up and what they found inside shocked them all. Inside was a white 4-inch ringed binder completely full of stuff. They pulled out the stuffed binder and opened it up. It was a scrapbook of nothing but them. It was filled with pictures of them they had given her. Plus news clippings from Oklahoma newspapers, New York’s, California’s, all the way to North Dakota’s. They soon realized she spent her time and money on this while she was well and in the hospital. On the binder’s cover was an Internet address. Ike walked over to his computer turning it on and booting it up. He walked back over to the bed and they kept going through the binder. Inside the box underneath the binder was one of each cassette and CD of all of theirs autographed ranging from Boomerang to Live from Albertane. Now they know why she asked for these. There were group photos of them, a Miss. Universe Barbie, a hair-braiding book, and something else wrapped in wrapping paper that said “Mac”. Plus a video that was labeled “please view ASAP.” Taylor grabbed Ike’s control and Zac went over to the computer to log on and find out about this website. Taylor popped in the video and turned it on.

“Hey guys! I had my mother put this in the box after you guys left along with Micky. I quickly made this with a recorder and tape from the hospital. If you are watching this I’m probably gone. Don’t freak or anything. We all knew this was going to happen.” Sarah started to cry on the video. “I hope you like the scrapbook. Plus I think you are going to find the website rather interesting. Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know that I love you all very dearly. Thank you for everything that you have done for me. I feel really indebted to you for all the pills you helped pay for. For coming and visiting just about everyday.” She started crying harder, “for not forgetting about me when all of you left. I’m so sorry for everything ungrateful I have done. Please thank your parents for me and let them know. Tell Jessica that I’m sorry I never got around to teaching her how to French braid.” Than she laughed a little, “seriously Zac, you would have been a cute little braiding dummy. Also let Avery know I got her the Barbie she could never find. You are probably wondering how since we knew they stopped making them. The Make-A-Wish kept in contact with me and I asked them for the book, Barbie, and the wrapped gift for Mackie. They agreed wondering that if there was something else I wanted. I figured that there was nothing I could give you that you can’t buy so sorry ‘bout that. Let Mac unwrap his gift. I hope he likes the wrapping paper.” That’s when they looked at the gift and noticed that the paper was Superman, his all time favorite superhero. “Anyway, I should probably end this tape. I love you all. And I wish you luck for the rest of your lives. Of course you don’t need it but I’ll be looking out for you up there. So don’t do anything stupid ‘cause I’ll know. And then I’ll harass you in your dreams and you KNOW I will. Once again I love you all and I’ll miss you guys terribly. I can’t wait to see you all in the future. But not near future because you have thousands of hormonal and obsessed girls that would be a little pissed that you left them for me.” Sarah said smiling. “Ok, I really am going to stop this. Love you guys and I hope you like your gifts. They aren’t much but they meant a lot. Plus, check the bottom of the box. Plus Zachary? Your secret is safe with me buddy. You are going to make some girl really lucky. Make sure I’m wearing your earrings.” That’s when Sarah waved and the tape cut out. All of the brothers stopped and didn’t say anything. That’s when the others heard the little cry Taylor let out. Zac followed in suit and finally Isaac.

“Look at the site you guys.” They looked at it. It was a fiction story site. It had about 30 or so stories on it. They noticed the titles of all of them. They weren’t fiction at all. They were all real, what happened between them and Sarah. Except she changed the name to Leslie. They noticed on the sheet of paper next to the site that was just plain old ‘HITZ’. They figured it was the password. They decided to update this site on their own time and continued to make it as though it was Sarah. Zac walked to the box and the bottom was lined with purple construction paper. He pulled it off and pulled out three plastic bags. Inside each one was a necklace with a little message. Isaac’s was a guitar. Taylor’s was a keyboard, and Zac’s a pair of drumsticks. She hand made them herself when she thought she was going to die the first time. On the back of the charms were their names engraved. It was midnight and that’s when the phone rang and the caller ID read “St. John’s Memorial.” Zac bravely picked up the telephone, “hello?” And their dread had been confirmed. Sarah was officially gone . . .
